  • The foreign bodies in the ENT field are very common disease. The kind of foreign bodies are closely related with our life style and was represented according to culture, habit, and economical status. We analyzed retrospectively 272 cases with foreign bodies in the upper aerodigestive tract and the external auditory canal which were diagnosed and managed at the Department of Otolaryngology Chungbuk National University from Jan. 1992 to Dec. 1994. We could divided 272 cases to the three groups; Group I was 212 cases(77.9%) that the patients had foreign bodies in the external auditory canal, nasal cavity, and pharynx which didn't need to be admitted, Group II was 57 cases(22%) that the patients had esophageal foreign bodies, and Group III was 3 cases(1.1%) that the patients had bronchial foreign bodies. The most prevalent age group was under 5 years old(32.3%). The overall ratio of male and female was 1.24 : 1, and the overall ratio of urban and rural ratio was 2.31 : 1. The ratio of esophageal foreign bodies and bronchial foreign bodies was 19 : 1. The incidence of sorts of foreign bodies in Group I was fish bone(41.07%), insect(25.9%), plastic bullet(8.0%), in order of frequency. The locations of foreign bodies in Group I was external auditory canal(36.8%), the tonsil(26.9%), nasal cavity(17.0%), tongue base(10.4%) in order of frequency. The incidence of sorts of foreign bodies in Group II was coin(49.1%), chicken bone(17.5%), fish bone(15.8%), in order of frequency. The main location of foreign bodies in Group II was the first narrowing(78.9%). In the Group III, the foreign bodies were corn, peanut, and apple. One patient who was arrived too late was died.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the effects of foreign investor ownership on firm innovation and the different stages of the firm innovation process for business group affiliation (affiliated firms) and nonaffiliated firms. Design/methodology - Research and development (R&D) intensity is used as a proxy for firm innovation. We use a sample of 7,655 firm-year observations of Korean listed firms from 2001 to 2015. To identify the distinct features of business group affiliation and how foreign investor ownership affects firm innovation, we divide the sample into affiliated and non-affiliated firms. Moreover, we classify total R&D expenditures as research and development expenditures. Findings - This study finds a positive relationship between foreign investor ownership and innovation in non-affiliated firms. However, the foreign investor ownership's role in facilitating firm innovation does not influence business group affiliation. Moreover, the results show that foreign investor ownership encourages firms to increase research expenditures, which is the amount spent in the early stages of a firm's R&D process. Originality/value - Existing studies have overlooked the distinct features of business group affiliation and the different characteristics of research and development expenditures. Thus, this study considers the distinct features of business group affiliation and investigates how foreign investor ownership affects different stages of R&D activities.

  • Objectives : The focus of the review was laid on differences in research pertaining to thread embedding acupuncture between domestic and foreign journals. Methods : We collected 53 Korean articles on thread embedding acupuncture study from 4 Korean article searching sites, and 80 foreign articles from Pubmed. We analyzed the number of the theses according to the publication year, study method, journal, and subject. Results : A total number of 134 thread embedding acupuncture articles were categorized as 100 clinical trials, 14 experimental papers, and 19 literature reviews. Of the collected clinical trials, 55 were case studies, 6 were CCTs and 39 were RCTs. The domestic clinical trials were comprised of 36 case studies, 1 CCT, and 2 RCTs, and foreign clinical trials were comprised of 19 case studies, 5 CCTs, and 37 RCTs. Although only 12 of the 39 domestic clinical trials exclusively treated thread embedding acupuncture to the experimental group, 38 out of 61 foreign clinical trials undertook thread embedding acupuncture as the sole treatment. While the 2 domestic RCTs research had no significant evidence that the experimental group was different from the control group, the experimental group demonstrated better responses than the control group in 31 of the 37 foreign RCT studies. Conclusions : Studies on thread embedding acupuncture are more intensively studied in the foreign field in comparison to the domestic field. Referring to the results from the foreign thread embedding acupuncture studies, domestic use of thread embedding acupuncture should be expanded. Also, more refined research needs to be conducted in the domestic field in order for the Koran medicine to lead the thread embedding acupuncture. This study is limited in that the literature search in the foreign journals were restricted.

  • This study investigates whether firm-specifics affect forecast accuracy using a sample of IPO firms in Korea. The forecasts accuracy can be differentiated depending on firm specifics. This study uses the foreign investor, intangible asset and patents as firm specifics. The analysts are divided into two groups by firm-specifies(foreign investors ratio of low and high, intangible asset ratio of low and high, patents of acquisition) and also examine the degree of analysts's forecast accuracy over the two groups. and examined the degree of the analysts' forecast accuracy over the two groups. The sample is composed of 460 IPO (Initial Public Offering) firms listed on the KOSDAQ (Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) for the period from 2001 to 2009. The analysts' forecast accuracy is much higher in the group of high foreign investor but is lower in the group of high intangible assets and patents. Also, the group of high foreign investors respectively interacts with group of high intangible assets ratio and group of patents of acquisition. In result, The analysts' forecast accuracy is higher because foreign investor is decreased information asymmetry. This study compares suggests that patents may be helpful for predicting forecast accuracy.

  • Asia1/Shamir that has been recommended by World Reference Laboratory for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is used as a vaccine strain, and is being prepared in many countries including Korea. Although it is assumed that vaccine strain Asia1/Shamir has a wide antigenicity, sufficient molecular biological analysis has not been accomplished yet. Complete genome sequence analysis showed that the region with the most severe variations was 1D region of structural protein-coding sequence; particularly amino acid 141~157 residues in 1D region RGD sites for binding to susceptible cells. In addition, five amino acids in 1D region were identified as characteristic sites that are different from other known Asia1 viruses. Asia1/Shamir strain was shown to be genetically similar to group VI that had occurred in the Middle East, but showed low level of genetic similarity to the group V viruses that had occurred in the Southeast Asia and China. It is considered that, if these viruses, group I and II including group V are introduced into Korea, care would be paid in case of inoculating the vaccine strain Shamir available in Korea.

  • Background: Topical hemostatic agents are used when ligation, electrocauterization, or other conventional hemostatic methods are impractical. Because a hemostatic agent is a foreign body, it can cause foreign body reactions, inflammation, and infections that can interfere with the wound healing process. Therefore, we should select hemostatic agents after considering their effects on wound healing. Here, we compared the effects of hemostatic agents on wound healing in a rectus abdominis muscle defect in rats. Methods: Twelve Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to creation of a $6{\times}6mm$ defect in the rectus abdominis muscle and divided into four groups: control group; group A, Tachosil fibrin sealant patch; group B, Surgicel Fibrillar oxidized regenerated cellulose; and group C, Surgicel Snow oxidized regenerated cellulose. For the histologic analysis, biopsies were performed on the 3rd, 7th, and 27th days. Results: The foreign body reaction was the weakest in group A and most significant in group C. The inflammatory cell infiltration was the weakest in group A and similar in groups B and C. Muscle regeneration differed among periods. The rats in group A were the most active initially, while those in group C showed prolonged activity. Conclusion: Tachosil and Surgicel administration increased inflammation via foreign body reactions, but the overall wound healing process was not significantly affected. The increased inflammation in the Surgicel groups was due to a low pH. We recommend using Tachosil, because it results in less intense foreign body reactions than Surgicel and faster wound healing due to the fibrin action.

  • We investigated brain activity during the performance of the intelligence task by a science high school student group (n=8) and a foreign language high school student group (n=5). Both groups scored in the top 1% on intelligence tests (science high school group: RAPM mean score=34.0, WAIS mean IQ=139.6; foreign language high school group: RAPM mean score=33.8, WAIS mean IQ=147.2). Analysis of brain activity during the performance of the intelligence task showed that both groups had brain activity in certain areas, including the left and right prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and anterior cingulate. The science high school group showed the highest activity in the right parietal cortex, which is related to visuo-spatial working memory, whereas the foreign language high school group showed the highest activity in the left prefrontal cortex, which is related to verbal working memory. The foreign language high school group showed higher brain activity than the science high school group in the left precentral gyrus which is related to the motion of the tongue and lips. These results show that the science high school group utilized the visuo-spatial area, whereas the foreign language high school group utilized the verbal area during the performance of the intelligence task. This suggests that the major thinking process differs depending on the gifted students' primary field of study, although they are doing the same task.
