  • Comprehensive numerical computations are made of side-heated squire cavity which is exposed to time dependent external mechanical forcing. Numerical solutions are acquires to the governing two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for a Boussinesq fluid. Time dependent heat transfer characteristics of interior fluid are analyzed to illustrate resonance phenomenon. When system is exposed to pure sinusoidal mechanical forcing, the numerical results disclose that the basic mechanism of resonance of mechanical forcing is same as that of thermal forcing of Ref. [3, 9]. In comparatively small amplitude of mechanical forcing, thermal characteristics of the system are similar to basic system(${\varepsilon}=0$).

  • We present an improved immersed boundary method for computing incompressible viscous flow around an arbitrarily moving body on a fixed computational grid. The main idea is to incorporate feedback forcing scheme of virtual boundary method with Peskin's regularized delta function approach in order to use large CFL number and transfer quantities between Eulerian and Lagrangian domain effectively. From the analysis of stability limits and effects of feedback forcing gains, optimum regions of the feedback forcing are suggested.

  • Mean radiative forcing efficiencies (${\Delta}$F/${\Delta}{\tau}_{0.5}$) over East Asia range from -65 to -95 W m$^{-2}$ at the surface while -20 to -40 W m$^{-2}$ at TOA under clear-sky conditions. These aerosol direct radiative forcings over East Asia are similar to other experimental results for different regions, i.e., the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX) and the Tropospheric Aerosol Radiative Forcing Observational Experiment (TARFOX), from which radiative forcing efficiencies of -75 Wm$^{-2}$ and -70 Wm$^{-2}$ for the Indian Ocean and the East Coast of the United States are reported. Nevertheless, the differences in aerosol parameters and relatively large STD values with regard to spatiotemporal variations suggest that the impact of aerosol on ARF over East Asia is more significant than previously recognized for other regions and should be continuously observed to determine the relation between increasing aerosols and associated radiative forcings in the region.

  • POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) is applied to turbulent leading-edge separation bubble to extract coherent structures. A two-dimensional leading-edge separation bubble is simulated by discrete-vortex method, where a time-dependent source forcing is incorporated. Based on the wealth of numerical data, POD is applied in a range of the forcing amplitude ( $A_{o}$ = 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) and forcing frequency (0 .leq. $f_{F}$H/ $U_{\infty}$.leq. 0.3). It is demonstrated that the structures of POD have noticeable changes with local forcings. In an effort to investigate the mechanism of decreasing reattachment length, dynamic behaviors of the expansion coefficients and contributions of the eigenfunctions of POD are scrutinized. As the forcing amplitude increases, the large-scale vortex structures are formed near the forcing amplitude increases, the large-scale vortex structures are formed near the separation point and the flow structures become more organized and more regular, accompanying with the reduction of reattachment length. By further inverstigation of POD global entropy, it is seen that the reattachment length is closely linked to the degree of organization of the flow structures.es.s.

  • Stomatal closure is a major physiological response to the increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which can lead to surface warming by regulating surface energy fluxes-a phenomenon known as CO2 physiological forcing. The magnitude of land surface warming caused by physiological forcing is substantial and varies across models. Here we assess the continental warming response to CO2 physiological forcing and quantify the resultant climate feedback using carbon-climate simulations from phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, with a focus on identifying the cause of intermodel spread. It is demonstrated that the continental (40°-70°N) warming response to the physiological forcing in summer (~0.55 K) is amplified primarily due to cloud feedback (~1.05 K), whereas the other climate feedbacks, ranging from -0.57 to 0.20 K, show relatively minor contributions. In addition, the strength of cloud feedback varies considerably across models, which plays a primary role in leading large diversity of the continental warming response to the physiological forcing.

  • We investigate effects of vertical resolution on a parameterization of convective gravity waves (SGWDC) developed in Song and Chun (2005) through offline and online tests of the SGWDC parameterization. For offline tests, numerical simulations of the SGWDC parameterization with different number of vertical levels (L66, L117, L168, L219 and L270) from the surface to 120 km are performed for two different saturation methods. It is found that the wave momentum forcing is overestimated or underestimated in the SGWDC parameterization with different vertical resolutions, depending on the saturation methods. The increase of the vertical resolution modifies the magnitude and distribution of the wave momentum forcing in the parameterization, and this is mainly due to modification of wave saturation levels in the wave saturation processes. However the wave momentum forcing converges in the parameterizations with vertical resolutions higher than L168. For online test, the SGWDC parameterizations with vertical resolutions of L66 and L164 are implemented into a climate model with vertical resolution of L66, separately. In the L164 experiment, the wave momentum forcing decreases in the mid-latitude winter mesosphere in July and zonal mean flows are more realistically reproduced in the tropical regions compared with those in the L66 experiment. These results demonstrate that the wave momentum forcing calculated in the parameterization is sensitive to the vertical resolution, and the implementation of the SGWDC parameterization into high resolution models is required for realistic representation of the gravity wave momentum forcing in large-scale numerical models.

  • Paleoproxy records indicate that abrupt changes in thermohaline circulation (THC) were induced by rapid meltwater discharge from retreating ice sheets. Such abrupt changes in the THC have been understood as a hysteresis behavior of a nonlinear system. Previous studies, however, primarily focused on a near-static hysteresis under fixed or slowly varying freshwater forcing (FWF), reflecting the equilibrated response of the THC. This study aims to improve the current understanding of transient THC responses under rapidly varying forcing and their dependency on forcing time scales. The results simulated by an Earth system model suggest that the bifurcation is delayed as the forcing time scale is shorter, causing the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation collapse and recovery to occur at higher and lower FWF values, respectively. The delayed shutdown/recovery occurs because bifurcation is determined not by the FWF value at the time but by the total amount of freshwater remaining over the THC convection region. The remaining freshwater amount is primarily determined by the forcing accumulation (i.e., time-integrated FWF), which is modulated by the freshwater/salt advection by ocean circulations and freshwater flux by the atmospheric hydrological cycle. In general, the latter is overwhelmed by the former. When the forced freshwater amount is the same, the modulation effect is stronger under slowly varying forcing because more time is provided for the feedback processes.

  • In the present paper, a direct forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) level set method is proposed to simulate the FSI (fluid-solid interaction) in two-phase flow. The main idea is to combine the direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) method with the level set method in the Cartesian coordinates. The DF/FD method is a non-Lagrange-multiplier version of a distributed Lagrange multiplier/fictitious domain (DLM/FD) method. This method does not sacrifice the accuracy and robustness by employing a discrete ${\delta}$ (Dirac delta) function to transfer quantities between the Eulerian nodes and Lagrangian points explicitly as the immersed boundary method. The advantages of this approach are the simple concept, easy implementation, and utilization of the original governing equation without modification. Simulations of various water-entry problems have been conducted to validate the capability and accuracy of the present method in solving the FSI in two-phase flow. Consequently, the present results are found to be in good agreement with those of previous studies.

  • We investigated the impacts of the diabatic heating location, vertical profile and basic state on the Rossby wave propagation. To examine the dynamical process of individual responses on the regional heat source, a dry version of the linear baroclinic model was used with climatological summertime (JJA) mean basic state and vertical structure of the diabatic heating for 1979-2008. Two sets of diabatic heating were constructed of those positioned in the mid-latitudes (Tibetan Plateau, eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the west-central Asia) and the tropics (the southern India, Bay of Bengal, and western Pacific). It was found that using the principal component analysis, atmospheric response to diabatic heating reaches to the steady state in 19th days in time. The prescribed mid-latitude forcing forms equivalent barotropic Rossby wave propagation along the westerly Asia jets, whereas the tropical forcing generates the Rossby wave train extending from the tropics to mid-latitudes. In relation to the maximum vertical profile, the mid-level forcing reveals a stronger response than the lower-level forcing, which may be caused by more effective Rossby wave response by the upper-level divergent flow. Under the different sub-seasonal mean state, both of the tropical and mid-latitude forcing induce the different sub-seasonal response intensity, due to the different basic-state wind.
