  • Characteristics of self-excited combustion oscillation are experimentally studied using confined premixed flames stabilized by a rearward-facing step. A new idea to suppress combustion oscillation was applied to the flames. The characteristics of unsteady combustion were examined, which is driven by forced pulsating mixture supply that can modulate its amplitude and frequency. The self-excited combustion oscillation having weaker flow velocity fluctuation intensity than that of the forced pulsating supply can be suppressed by the method. The effects of the forced pulsation amplitude and frequency on controlling self-excited combustion oscillations were also investigated comparing with the steady mixture supply. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations, and it also exhibits desirable performances, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion load and reduced pollutant emissions of nitric oxide.

The characteristics of unsteady combustion were examined and the unsteady combustion was driven by forced pulsating mixture supply that can modulate its amplitude and frequency. The effects of the forced pulsation amplitude and frequency on controlling self-excited combustion oscillations were also investigated comparing with the steady mixture supply. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillation. Symptoms of self-excited combustion oscillation were also studied in order to predict the onset of combustion oscillation before it proceeded to a catastrophic failure For the purpose, the unique measures to observe the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations based on the careful statistics of fluctuating properties in flames, such as pressure or emission of OH radicals, have been proposed.

  • The numerical study about the vortex-induced vibration and vortex shedding in the wake has been presented. Prior to the numerical simulation of flexible riser systems concerning engineering conditions, efficiency validating of the proposed FSI solution method have been performed. The comparison between numerical simulation and published experimental data shows that the CFD method designed for FSI solution could give acceptable result for the VIV prediction of flexible riser/pipe system. As meaningful study on VIV and vortex shedding mode with the focus on flexible riser model systems, two kinds of typical simulation cases have been carried out. One was related to the simulation of vortex visualization in the wake for a riser model subject to forced oscillation, and another was related to the simulation of fluid-structure interaction between the pipes of coupled multi-assembled riser system. The result from forced oscillation simulation shows that the vortex-induced vibration with high response frequency but small instantaneous vibration amplitude contributes to vortex conformation as much as the forced oscillation with large normalized amplitude does, when the frequency of forced oscillation was relatively high. In the multi-assembled riser systems, it has been found that the external current velocity and the distance between two pipes are the critical factors to determine the vibration state and the steady vibration state emerging in quad-pipe system may be destroyed more easily than dual-pipe system.

  • The effects of unsteady combustion are experimentally studied using forced pulsating mixture supply. It was shown that unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations. It may also have desirable performances, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion load, augmented heat transfer, reduced pollutant emissions and so on. We examined the characteristics of unsteady combustion driven by forced pulsating mixture supply in a small duct-combustor with a rearward-facing step. Further, we found its influence on the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations, the possibility of suppressing self-excited combustion oscillations and the reason why the self-excited combustion oscillation was suppressed using the forced pulsating mixture supply, comparing with the steady mixture supply.

  • This paper presents an application of forced oscillation technique to measure pitch dynamic stability derivatives of a missile model in the low speed wind tunnel. The missile model is oscillated by D.C. electric servomotor with constant amplitudes and frequencies. Phase shift is determined as the difference of peak values between input and output signals from the dynamic stability balance installed at the center of gravity of the model. Stability derivatives were calculated by using phase shifts, amplitudes, forcing moments and input frequencies. Test results show the proper usage of the force oscillation technique with good damping effects.

  • In this paper, we establish some new oscillation criteria for the second-order forced nonlinear functional dynamic equations with damping term $$(r(t)x^{\Delta}(t))^{\Delta}+q({\sigma}(t))x^{\Delta}(t)+p(t)f(x({\tau}(t)))=e(t)$$, and $$(r(t)x^{\Delta}(t))^{\Delta}+q(t)x^{\Delta}(t)+p(t)f(x({\sigma}(t)))=e(t)$$, on a time scale ${\mathbb{T}}$, where r(t), p(t) and q(t) are real-valued right-dense continuous (rd-continuous) functions [1] defined on ${\mathbb{T}}$ with p(t) < 0 and ${\tau}:{\mathbb{T}}{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{T}}$ is a strictly increasing differentiable function and ${\lim}_{t{\rightarrow}{\infty}}{\tau}(t)={\infty}$. No restriction is imposed on the forcing term e(t) to satisfy Kartsatos condition. Our results generalize and extend some pervious results [5, 8, 10, 11, 12] and can be applied to some oscillation problems that not discussed before. Finally, we give some examples to illustrate our main results.
