  • The weld pool convection problem that occurs during the stationary GTA welding has been studied, considering the four driving forces for weld pool convection, i.e., the electromagnetic force, the buoyancy force, the aerodynamic drag force, and the surface tension force at the weld pool surface. In the numerical simulation, the difficulties associated with the irregular moving liquid-solid interface have been successfully overcome by adopting a Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. In the experiments to show the validity of the numerical analysis, a deep periphery and shallow centerpentrated weld pool shape was observed from the etched specimen. It could be revealed that this type of weld pool shape could be simulated, only when some of aerodynamic drag force distributions are considered. Although slight disagreement arose, the calculated and the observed weld pool shapes were in a reasonable agreement.

  • Unidirectional solidification of $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composites was studied under the condition of forced convection by vibration. It has been shown that thermal gradient for solid is different from that for liquid during solidification under force convection by vibration. With increase of vibration, mobility of liquid increases, but decreases with decreasing vibration. The rate of solidification is very high initially, and decreases suddenly. For further solidification, the rate of solidification decrceases slowly, and shows a L-type behavior. The mechanical vibration during solidification effects efficiently on nucleation, and induces a forced convection in liquid. By the forced convection, great thermal gradient of liquid interface between solid and liquid can be obtained. The amount of solute near the interface also decreases as solute distribution is improved by the forced convection.

  • The natural convection heat transfer and solidification in a stratified pool are studied. The flow and heat transfer characteristics in a heat generating pool are compared between single-layered and double-layered pools. And local Nusselt number distributions on outer walls are obtained to consider thermal loads on a vessel wall. The cooling and solidification of Al₂O₃/Fe melt in a hemispherical vessel are simulated to study the mechanism of heat transfer and temperature distribution. A unstructured mesh is chosen for this study because of the non-orthogonality originated from the boundaries of double-layered pool. Interface between the layers is modeled to be fixed. With this assumption mass flux across the interface is neglected, but shear force and heat flux are considered by boundary conditions. The colocated cell-centered finite volume method is used with the Rhie-Chow interpolation to compute cell face velocity. To prevent non-physical solutions near walls in case body force is large the wall pressure is extrapolated by the way to include body force. The numerical solutions calculated by current method show that averaged downward heat flux of the double-layered pool increases compared to single-layered pool and maximum temperature occurs right below the interface of the layers.

  • Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because magnetic body force exists in an addition to gravity and buoyancy. In this paper, natural convection of a magnetic fluids(W-40) in a cubic cavity is examined by numerical and experimental method. One side wall was kept at a constant temperature($25^{\circ}C$), and the opposite side wall was also held at a constant but lower temperature($20^{\circ}C$). Under above conditions, various magnitudes of the magnetic fields were applied up. GSMAC scheme is used for a numerical method, and the thermo-sensitive liquid crystal film(R20C5A) is utilized in order to visualize wall-temperature distributions as an experimental method. This study has resulted in the following fact that the natural convection of a magnetic fluids is controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.

  • This study deals with the interaction between buoyancy-induced convection and externally imposed excitation in the form of harmonic rocking and the effect of the interaction upon heat transfer in low-Pr liquids. A wide array of system responses are discussed using the spectral collocation numerical technique. The superposition of buoyancy and Coriolis forces leads to complex fluid flow and heat transfer. The transition to chaotic convection is accelerated, and heat transfer rates are reduced as the enclosure is excited at the fundamental frequency of oscillation associated with the pure buoyancy-driven case. Average heat transfer rates are correlated for Pr=0.02 and 0.03. The heat transfer is affected more in the Pr=0.03 liquid than the case of Pr=0.02.

  • For an aspect ratio (transport length-to-width) of 5, Pr=1.13, Le=1.91, Pe=4.3, Cv=1.01, $P_B=20\;Torr$, the effects of addition of inert gas Ne on thermally buoyancy-driven convection ($Gr=2.44{\times}10^3$) are numerically investigated for further understanding and insight into essence of transport phenomena in two dimensional horizontal enclosures. For $10K{\leq}{\Delta}T{\leq}50\;K$, the crystal growth rate increases from 10 K up to 20 K, and then is slowly decreased until ${\Delat}T=50\;K$, which is likely to be due to the effects of thermo-physical properties stronger than the temperature gradient corresponding to driving force for thermal convection. The dimensional maximum velocity gratitude reflecting the intensity of thermal convection is directly and linearly proportional to the temperature difference between the source and crystal regions. The rate is first order-exponentially decreased for $2{\leq}Ar{\leq}5$. This is related to the finding that the effects of side walls tend to stabilize convection in the growth reactor. In addition, the rate is first order exponentially decayed for $10{\leq}P_B{\leq}200\;Torr$.

  • For Ar=5, Pr=1.18, Le=0.15, Pe=2.89, Cv=1.06, $P_B$=20 Torr, the effects of impurity $(N_2)$ on thermally and solutally buoyancy-driven convection ($Gr_t=3.46{\times}10^4$ and $Gr_s=6.02{\times}10^5$, respectively) are theoretically investigated for further understanding and insight into an essence of thermo-solutal convection occurring in the vapor phase during the physical vapor transport. For $10K{\leq}{\Delta}T{\leq}50K$, the crystal growth rates are intimately related and linearly proportional to a temperature difference between the source and crystal region which is a driving force for thermally buoyancy-driven convection. Moreover, both the dimensionless Peclet number (Pe) and dimensional maximum velocity magnitudes are directly and linearly proportional to ${\Delta}T$. The growth rate is second order-exponentially decayed for $2{\leq}Ar{\leq}5$. This is related to a finding that the effects of side walls tend to stabilize the thermo-solutal convection in the growth reactor. Finally, the growth rate is found to be first order exponentially decayed for $10{\leq}P_B{\leq}200$ Torr.

  • A numerical calculation is performed to study the effects of buoyancy force on the heat transfer characteristics of laminar forced convection flow in inclined parallel plates with the upper part cooled and the lower Part heated uniformly. Numerical results are presented for the Reynolds number ranges from $4.0\times10^{-3}$ to $1.13\times10^{-1}$. the angle of inclination, $\theta$. from 0 to 90 degree and Pr of the high viscosity fluid is 909. It is found that the flow pattern of mixed convection in inclined parallel Plates can be classified into four patterns which affected by Reynolds number and the angle of inclination.

  • The problem of transient laminar natural convection in compressible fluid in a rectangular enclosure is considered. The upper and lower boundaries of the enclosure are thermally insulating and the side boundaries are maintained at fixed temperatures. The fluid is considered to be a perfect gas with constant viscosity and thermal conductivity and the formulation differs from the boussinesq simplification in that the effects of variable density are completely retained. The motions are restricted to two dimensions. For incompressible fluid, the natural convection is driven mainly by buoyancy force. But the solutions show that for compressible fluid, the natural convection is driven by pressure and buoyancy forces and the thermally induced motion is acoustic in nature.
