A winter forage tetraploid rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivar, 'Daegokgreen', was developed at the Department of Central Area Crop Science, NICS, RDA in 2016. The mutant line 'CG11003-8-B', which was induced from rye cultivar 'Gogu' (diploid) by colchicine treatment, was selected for its excellent agronomic performance and was placed in preliminary yield trials for one year, 2013. The line was designated "Homil59" and was tested for regional yield trials at the four locations in Korea from 2014 to 2016. Finally, the new cultivar was named as the 'Daegokgreen' (grant number 8274). The leaf of cultivar 'Daegokgreen' is wide, long and dark-green color. The cultivar also has a big-size grain with light-brown color. The heading date of cultivar 'Daegokgreen' was April 17 which was 2 days later than that of check cultivar 'Gogu'. The tolerance to cold and wet injury, and resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust of the new cultivar were similar to those of the check cultivar but the resistance to the lodging of the new cultivar was stronger than that of the check. The average roughage fresh and dry matter yield of the new cultivar after 10 days from heading were 37.0 and 7.7 MT ha-1, respectively, which were similar to those (38.4 and 8.0 MT ha-1) of the check cultivar. The roughage quality of 'Daegokgreen' was higher in crude protein content (8.9%) than that of the check cultivar (7.9%), while was similar to the check in total digestible nutrients (56.9%). This cultivar is recommended for fall sowing forage crops at all of crop cultivation areas in Korea.
One of the major obstructing factors against managing dairy farm in Korea has been a shortage of roughage supply. The shortage of roughage caused excessive use of concentrate feed increase of production cost and deterioration of cattle quality. In order to solve this problem for the dairy farm, use of fallow paddy field in the winter was feasible to produce barley and rye forage during the winter season after harvesting of in. And many desirable effects of raising cattle productivity, saving dollars for importing feeds and providing huge ground for manure spreading are expected by enlarged local roughage production. Through analysing the forage producing process, a mechanized operation model was developed for dairy farms in Korea. Its model consists of seeding models(till, no-till model) and harvesting models(wrap silage, traditional silage, hay model). Currently, the government policies are being executed to urge producing winter cereal wrap silage in the fallow paddy field with various supporting programs. Ant with enlarged local forage production, it is possible to make a new huge market fur forage producing machine.
Anaerobic biodegradability(AB), which can be determined with the ultimate methane yield by the decomposition of organic materials, is one of the important parameters for the design and the operation of anaerobic digestion plant. In this study, Biochemical Methane Potential(BMP) test has been carried out to evaluate the methane yield of agro-industrial biomasses such as cattle manure, Italian ryegrass(IRG), Oats, Rye and Barley as the forage crops, Rush, the sludges produced from milling and slaughterhouse wastewater treatment plant(SMWTP, SSWTP). In the condition of thermophilic anaerobic digestion, the ultimate methane yield and anaerobic biodegradability of forage crops ranged from 0.367 to $0.452LCH_4$/gVS of methane yield with AB having the range of about 77.0 to 87.3%. On the other hand, that of other substrate showed low figures compared with the forage crops because of low VS content and C/N ratio. Therefore, the forage crops could be used as a good substrate to produce much more the methane in anaerobic digestion.

The performance of grass filter strips (GFS) in abating $PO_4$-P concentrations from the forage cropland was tested in an experiment on the 10% slope in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA) from October 2007 to September 2009. Forage croplands with rye-corn double cropping system applied with chemical fertilizer and livestock manure (LM) were compared in a natural condition. The plots were hydrologically isolated Main plots consisted of the length of GFS, such as 0m, 5m, 10m and 15m. Sub plots consisted of the type of LM, such as chemical fertilizer (CF), composted cattle manure (CCM) and composted swine manure (CSM). Concentrations of PO4-P in surface runoff water were reduced as the length of GFS increased. Especially, GFS with 10m and 15m reduced $PO_4$-P concentrations significantly compared to that with 0m and 5m (p<0.05). The results from this study suggest that GFS improved the removal and trapping $PO_4$-P from forage croplands.

Rye-hairy vetch mixture would be recommended fur produce higher yield and conserving soil environment. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of planting and harvest dates on quality and productivity of rye-hairy vetch mixture. Plant height of rye and hairy vetch was increased with delayed harvest dates, but it found that there was on significant difference among seeding dates. The dry matter(DM) content was increased with delayed harvest dates, and it showed 30% DM in mid-May. Crude protein(CP) content was decreased sharply from 17~18% in heading stage to 9~10% in flowering stage. The content of ADF(Acid detergent fiber) and NDF(Neutral detergent fiber) were increased with delayed harvest date, but IVDMD(In vitro dry matter digestibility) and TDN(Total digestible nutrient) were decreased. The change of dry matter yield was affected significantly by harvest date but was not by seeding time. The results of this experiments indicated that harvest in late-April would be recommended to produce the highest yield and quality if it is considered to cultivate com fur silage. Harvest in mid-May would be recommendable with the cultivation of early maturity silage corn or sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrids.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of novel Lactobacillus plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 on the quality and fermentation characterization of rye silages. The study was conducted at the National Institute of Animal Science, Cheonan province in Korea and consisted of three treatments: control without lactic acid bacteria, treatment with L. plantarum KCC-10 and treatment with L. plantarum KCC-19. The amounts of acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber as well as the in vitro dry matter digestibility in KCC-10 and KCC-19 were similar to the control. The pH of rye silage in L. plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 treatments decreased compared to the control (p<0.05). The amount of lactic acid in L. plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 treatments increased (p<0.05), but the amounts of acetic acid and butyric acid in KCC-10 and KCC-19 treatments decreased (p<0.05). In addition, the number of lactic acid bacteria in L. plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 treatments increased compared to the control (p<0.05). Therefore, we suggest that rye silage was improved by the addition of L. plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of addition of lactic acid bacteria inoculants on quality of rye silage harvested at early heading stage. The nutritive values in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculated group showed similar results to control. The pH of rye silage in LAB inoculation significantly decreased as compared to control (p<0.05). In addition, the content of lactic acid in LAB inoculation significantly increased (p<0.05), but the content of acetic acid in LAB treatments decreased. In addition, lactic acid bacterial counts in LAB inoculation significantly increased as compared to control (p<0.05). Therefore, we suggest that rye silage could be improved by LAB inoculation.

Soil fertility different depend on application rate of manure and compost for many years. While each crop has different adaptability depend on soil fertility, crop and species or varieties should be chosen depending on the adaptability and productivity. These experiments were carried out to compare the five winter cereal crops for whole crop silage on growth, yield and feed value as affected by soil organic content. The rate of increase on no. of spikes at high fertile soil compared with medium fertile soil was sequently high Samhan (Oat's variety) > Cheongwoo (Wheat) > Gogu (Rye) > Youngyang (Barley) > Shinyoung (Triticale). The rate of decrease at low fertile soil compared with medium fertile soil was sequently high Youngyang > Gogu > Cheongwoo > Shinyoung > Samhan. The triticale was lower variation of no. of spikes as affected by soil organic content than that of other winter cereals. The variations of dry matter yield as affected by soil fertility was higher oat and barley and lower triticale. Forage yield of triticale was higher about 69 percent than that of barley at low fertile soil. Forage yield was the highest in triticale and the lowest in rye in all soil fertility. In high fertile soil, rate of increasing digestible dry matter (DDM) yield compared with medium fertile was high in Samhan and Youngyang. Rate of reduced DDM yield in low fertile soil compared with medium fertile was low in Shinyoung and Cheongwoo.
'Dagreen' (Scale cereal L.), a new rye variety was developed from the open pollination among 10 rye lines at the National Institute of Crop Science in 1995 and mass selection were made at National Institute of Crop Science from 1996 to 1999. Recurrent selections were made at Dept. Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA from 2000 to 2006. This new variety has erect plant type with medium size pale green leaves. The number of spike per $m^2$ was 713 and the plant height was 103cm. The heading date of 'Dagreen' was April 24 which was 7 days earlier than that of "Koolgrazer". It was adaptable for forage use at an early stage as a whole crop. Lodging resistance was higher than that of check variety 'Koolgrazer'. The chemical components and quality of forage showed 10.2 % crude protein, 36.6 % ADF, 62.4 % NDF and 59.9 % TDN. 'Dagreen' showed high resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust than those of check variety in the field condition. The average dry matter (7,010kg $ha^{-1}$) of 'Dagreen' harvested at April 28 were 6 % higher than 'Koolgrazer'. This variety is recommended for all of the rye cultivation area in Korea.
The effect of cattle manure with the rates of 2 and 4 ton $l0a^{-1}$ for winter rye and summer corn cultivation, respectively, on the dry matter (DM) yield and nitrogen (N) uptake were investigated during successive threeyear conversion period from paddy to upland condition in paddy field. The changes in soil properties and soil N supplying capacity during repetitive manure application were a1so examined. Growth and DM yield of upland forage crops, especially. winter rye were hindered highly by poor soil condition in the first year after conversion from paddy to upland condition, so apparent recovery of cattle manure N by crops was very low in the first conversion year. But, DM yield and N uptake of upland forage crops were increased linearly by accumulative input of cattle manure along with mineral N enrichment in soil, which also increased apparent recovery of cattle manure-No It seemed that those increases were mainly due to the improvement of soil properties such as soil mineral N, soil organic matter (soil carbon), potentially mineralizable N and bulk density by accumulative input of cattle manure rather than the increase of soil N supply according to accumulative conversion period from paddy to upland condition. It was derived that conversion period from paddy to upland condition over 2 years is needed to obtain proper DM yield in paddy field and accumulative inputs of cattle manure during the conversion period is more influential to the continuous increment of DM yield and N uptake of upland crop as well as of potential N supplying capacity of soil.
