Immunosecurity: immunomodulants enhance immune responses in chickens

  • The global population has increased with swift urbanization in developing countries, and it is likely to result in a high demand for animal-derived protein-rich foods. Animal farming has been constantly affected by various stressful conditions, which can be categorized into physical, environmental, nutritional, and biological factors. Such conditions could be exacerbated by banning on the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter together with a pandemic situation including, but not limited to, African swine fever, avian influenza, and foot-and-mouth disease. To alleviate these pervasive tension, various immunomodulants have been suggested as alternatives for antibiotics. Various studies have investigated how stressors (i.e., imbalanced nutrition, dysbiosis, and disease) could negatively affect nutritional physiology in chickens. Importantly, the immune system is critical for host protective activity against pathogens, but at the same time excessive immune responses negatively affect its productivity. Yet, comprehensive review articles addressing the impact of such stress factors on the immune system of chickens are scarce. In this review, we categorize these stressors and their effects on the immune system of chickens and attempt to provide immunomodulants which can be a solution to the aforementioned problems facing the chicken industry.

Experimental animal models for development of human enterovirus vaccine

  • Enterovirus infections induce infectious diseases in young children, such as hand, foot, and mouth disease which is characterized by highly contagious rashes or blisters around the hands, feet, buttocks, and mouth. This predominantly arises from enterovirus A71 or coxsackievirus A16 infections and in severe cases, they can lead to encephalitis, paralysis, pulmonary edema, or even fatality, representing a global health threat. Due to the absence of effective therapeutic strategies for these infections, various experimental animal models are being investigated for the development of vaccines. During the early stages of research on enterovirus infections, non-human primate infections exhibited symptoms like those in humans, leading to their utilization as model animals. However, due to economic and ethical considerations, their current usage is limited. While enterovirus infections do not readily occur in mice, an infection model with mouse-adapted strain in neonatal mice has been employed. Cellular receptors have been identified in human cells, and genetically modified mice expressing these receptors have been used. Most recently, the utilization of Mongolian gerbil model is actively being considered and should be pursued for further animal model development. So, herein, we provide a summarized overview of the current portfolio of available enterovirus infection models, emphasizing their respective advantages and limitations.

  • Behcet syndrome is a multisystem disease complex of unknown cause. It is usually manifested by aphthous oral and genital ulcers, uveitis and skin eruption. Less frequently, CNS involvement, colitis, large vessel vasculitis, and myocarditis occur. Recently, several studies have reported renal manifestations of amyloidosis and focal necrotizing glomerulonephritis in Behcet syndrome. We describe a patient with Behcet syndrome who experienced nephrotic syndrome with focal effacement of epithelial foot process in glomeruli. A brief review of literature ensues.

국내 사육중인 쿠바홍학에서 Aspergillus fumigatus 감염증례 (Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection in a Captive Carribean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus Ruber))

  • Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is one of the most important mycotic infection in wild animals stressed by captivity and concurrent disease. A 14-year-old Carribean flamingo controlled bumble foot with antibiotics died after having dyspnea, depression, and anorexia. Necropsy findings revealed pyogranulomatous inflammations of lung and greenish gray-colored mold on air sacs. A carribean flamingo was diagnosed as pyogranulomatous pneumoniae due to A.fumigatus infection by results of lung tissue culture and microscopic examination.

A Case of Orthostatic Proteinuria Progressed to Persistent Proteinuria Associated with Renal Pathology

  • Orthostatic or postural proteinuria is the most common cause of asymptomatic proteinuria in children. As orthostatic proteinuria (OP) is a benign disease with relatively good prognosis, it has no specific management, and patients only need to be observed. However, if OP shows a persistently high level of proteinuria, in theory, glomerular changes can occur. An 11-year-old girl was referred to the hospital due to asymptomatic proteinuria and was diagnosed as having OP based on the results of clinical and laboratory examinations, urinalysis, and protein/creatinine (TP/Cr) ratio at both supine and erect positions. During follow-up observation, the 24-hour TP/Cr ratio was persistently higher than 1.5 mg/mg for 2 years. We performed renal biopsy, which showed mesangial proliferative glomerular lesions with focal effacement of the podocyte foot processes, but without immune depositions. OP can be accompanied by glomerular lesions if moderate to severe proteinuria persists.

일부 수도권 거주 주민의 식품 안전성에 대한 인식 조사 (A Survey on Perceived Food Safety in Urban Residents)

  • A survey was conducted to investigate the relationship between knowledge of perceived food safety and actual food purchase practices among parents of children under the age of seven (N=309) in 2005. The seventeen following perceived food safety items were included in the survey (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot and mouth disease, pathogenic avian influenza, swine fever, allergens, GMO, irradiated food, food poisoning bacteria, endocrine disrupter, antibiotics, food additives, carcinogen, natural toxin, agrichemical residues, place of origin, cultivation methods, and heavy metal) Most parents were highly concerned about investigating all food safety topics. Up to 90.0% of the participants recognized the importance of food safety. The public concern has caused a considerable decline in the demand for food afterreceiving news about food safety through mass media, Also, the majority of subjects required correct food safety information.

면역기능이 정상인 성인에서 발생한 Enterovirus 중증 폐렴 1예 (A Case of Severe Enterovirus Pneumonia in an Immunocompetent Adult)

  • Enterovirus commonly causes neurologic diseases (aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, etc.), hand-foot-mouth disease, herpangina, and acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. However, it rarely causes pneumonia in immunocompetent adults. In Korea, no case has been reported about pneumonia caused by enterovirus in healthy adults. We can cite the case of a 20-year-old woman who presented severe community-acquired pneumonia caused by enterovirus. The diagnosis was based on reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of a respiratory specimen.

  • In the Oriental Medicine, the element of coldness is regarded as one of the important causes which induce female's diseases. Nowadays the number of the female patients is ascending that serously appeal the coldness-sense and pain-sense at the particular part of the body, for example, hand, foot, abdomen, waist, external genital portion and so on. These are caused by female's physiological characteristics of the menstration and delivery, and the influence of the life circumstances, for example, the clothes briefness, the overdiet, oversetting of the airconditioner. The Female's Part-Coldness Syndrome is a disease which the oriental people better than the western people suffer from and if it would be sick for a long time, it could brings into the other diseases. The Oriental Medicine have better effects by the diagnosis and treatment according per symptom in the contrast with the Western Medicine having difficulties in the point of accurate diagnosis and treatment.

가축질병 예방대책 - 구제역(口蹄疫)의 원인과 예방대책

  • 구제역(Foot and Mouth Disease)은 우제류(偶蹄類; 발굽이 둘로 갈라 진 동물)에 구제역 바이러스가 감염되어 발생하는 급성, 열성의 전염병이다. 감염 시입과 제부(발굽)의 점막 및 피부에 수포를 형성하는 것이 특정이다. 이 질병은 소, 돼지, 염소, 산양, 사슴, 산돼지, 코끼리, 기린 등 70 여종이상의 동물에 감염되어 발육, 비유, 운동, 번식 등의 장애를 유발한다. 이 질병은 감수성동물이 많고, 전염력이 강하며, 바이러스형이 다양하여 방역에 극히 어려움을 나타내는 질병이다. 현재 세계동물위생기구(World Organization for Animal Health, OIE, 국제수역사무국)에서 발생시 보고하도록 규정하고 있는 질병으로, 국내에서도 제1종 가축 전염병으로 규정하여 국가에서 관리하는 질병이다. 구제역 비발생국에서는 발생국으로 부터의 가축, 축산물들의 수입금지나, 엄격한 검역조치를 취할 수 있어 국제교역에 많은 지장을 주는 질병이다. 이에 본고에서는 이러한 구제역에 대하여 자세히 알아보고, 이에 대한 효율적인 방역 대책이 무엇인가를 생각해보고자 한다.

  • 우리나라와 축산물(돼지고기) 등의 무역이 활발한 동북아의 국가인 대만은 1930년 구제역의 최종 발생보고 이후 약 47년간 비발생 상태를 유지해 왔었다. 1997년 3월 20일 오전 11:00경 대만에 구제역이 발생하였다는 대만정부의 공식발표에 따라 우리나라에서는 동일자로 대만산 우제류 동물 및 그 생산물의 수입금지를 전면적으로 실시함과 동시에 `97. 2. 17. 이후 도축되어 우리나라에 수입된 돼지고기에 대하여 전량 반송조치토록 수입자에게 통보하는 등 구제역의 국내유입 차단을 위한 정부차원의 여러가지 조치 등을 지속적으로 취하고 있다. 이에 필자들은 미국의 농무성 동식물검역청(USDA, APHIS)에서 구제역 발생 및 구제역바이러스의 전파위험도를 분석한 자료 (Foot-and-Mouth Disease : Soures of Outbreaks and Hazard Categorization of Modes of Virus Transmission, December. 1994, USDA : APHIS : VS, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health)를 소개함으로써 구제역바이러스의 국내 유입방지 대책을 위한 기초자료로 제시하고자 한다.
