  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid. • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Current problem of this device is that the temperature of ER fluid increases when ER clutch is operating and affects the performance of ER clutch. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature increase of ER fluid. Analytic power transmission relationships and the temperature increase model using the rheological model of ER fluid were developed and the dynamic model of proposed ER clutch system was constructed, also. With this relationships, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described and performance variations due to temperature increases of ER fluid were estimated. In conclusion, compared with neglecting temperature increase effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential. Therefore, to achieve uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid with a view point of material development and design carefully ER clutch considering temperature increase effects with a view point of mechanical design skill.ign skill.

  • Frictional heat greatly influences the friction behaviors during clutch engagement. Therefore, the engagement of a wet or dry clutch is frequently not under control by the frictional heat. In a wet clutch, the frictional temperature also specially needs to be controlled, and in many cases, the clutch material is selected to prevent a temperature rise from the friction between friction pad and separator. However, only the selection of the clutch material cannot ensure sufficient control of the temperature rise by the friction. The groove pattern on a friction pad is designed for more flow rates of transmission fluid between the contact gap of clutch pad and separator for the cooling effect. In this work, grove patterns are designed for more flow rates out of the contact gap between friction pad and separator plate. Selected groove design shows the improvement flow rates of transmission fluid through both inner and outer radius, where most of the transmission fluid flows through the outer radius when the clutch is engaged due to the centrifugal force in conventional wet clutch groove. Several comparisons of the amounts of frictional heat generated on clutch pads are made in order to verify the decrease of the temperature rise according to the flow rates along the groove patterns.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. This device responses very rapidly when controlled by rapid and continuous electrical signal and can form a servosystem. Wear, noise and vibration during operation is very low level. This study was undertaken to investigate substitutive possibilities of this ER clutch for existing power transmission mechanism. An analytic relationships using rheological model (so called, 'Bingham plastic model') of ER fluid were developed, and operation constraints and optimum design concepts were constructed. With this relationships, typical responses of ER clutch and effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with existing mechanisms, an excellent performance of ER clutch was confirmed.confirmed.

  • ER clutch is a device using electro-rheological fluid which is one of so called intelligent materials. Power transmission behavior of an ER clutch can be controlled by electrical field applied tb the fluid. In this work, a new type of servomechanism is developed with two ER clutchs, driven by two electrical motors rotating in reverse directions. The concentric cylinder type ER clutch is operated by PID control. The system shows good angular position control characteristics with respect to sinusoidal and square inputs.

  • In this work, an ER clutch has been constructed and its characteristics have been evaluated by adapting an electro-rheological fluid(ERF) as an operating medium. ER fluids are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. An ER clutch system using ER fluid is a new conception device because an apparent viscosity of ER fluid can be changed by apply an electric field. As a first, Bingham properties of ER fluids are experimentally distilled as a function of electric field. We use the disk type ER clutch in which the ER fluid fills the annular space between a pair of coaxial disk electrodes and experiment results show that the measured revolution per minute was increased with the increase of the electric field. The ER fluid used in the present study consists of weight fraction 35% in zeolite suspended silicone oil.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. In this paper(Part III), the behavior of ER clutch under proper conditions was investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical analyses developed from Part I, II. Considering the optimum design concept proposed from Part I, the concentric cylinder type of ER clutch was designed and the experimental apparatus for the performance test was constructed. The comparisons made indicated that the power transmission model of ER clutch and the temperature rise model of ER fluid developed from Part I, II were acceptable for engineering design calculations.culations.

  • Transmission fluid film behaviors in the gap between the wet clutch pad and separator plate are analyzed using the CFD software ADINA. Three pattern groove designs are selected and are used to validate the fluid film behaviors based on the outlet flow in the gap when the wet clutch pad and separator plate are engaged. The main design goal for pattern grooves is faster engagement. In most cases, much of the outlet flow of transmission fluid in the gap occurs on the outer radius boundary due to the centrifugal force generated by the clutch pad circular motion. Groove patterns are created to ensure faster transmission fluid outlet flow in the direction of the inner radius boundary. Computational results of the selected groove patterns are compared.

  • This work studies the flow behaviors in the gap between the friction pad and separator in wet-clutch systems. The fluid volume of the lubricant is modeled using the entire system of wet-clutch pack of a dual clutch transmission that has larger outer radius of odd gear shifts and smaller inner radius of even gear shifts. Flow behaviors in the gap of the clutch pad are computed using the gear shift modes that consider the real relative velocities between the friction pad and separator. Flow behaviors in the gap of the disengaged clutch pad are mainly investigated for the wet-clutch system, whereas the engaged clutch pad is modeled with no fluid rate through the contacting surfaces. The developed hydrodynamic fluid pressures and velocity fields in the clutch pad gap are computed to obtain the relevant information for managing flow rates in wet-clutch packs under dual operating conditions during gear shifts. These hydrodynamic pressures and velocity fields are compared on the basis of each gear level and gap location, which is necessary to determine the effects of groove patterns on the friction pad. Shear stresses in the gap locations are also computed on the basis of the gear level for the inner and outer clutch pads. The computed results are compared and used for the design of cooling capacity against frictional heat generation in wet-clutch pack systems.

  • Recently, there has been an active study about smart fluid to control the vibration, in which MR fluid is evaluated as most efficient because it can generate different bonding forces based on the intensity of the external magnetic fields. This paper attempts to find a mechanism that, under limited conditions during a clutch production that uses such dynamic characteristic, defects the maximum intensity of electromagnetism. Using the finite element analysis program, we predicted a change within the bonding force of the MR fluid occurring inside the clutch when it is subjected to an increased electric current. In addition, we analyzed the change in the magnetic intensity when the coil comprising the coil control center is switched to multiple lines from the standard single line, to find a mechanism that can maximize the effect. Based on this analysis, we developed the clutch and tested its function, hoping to widen future MR fluid's range of application.
