The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of different sowing dates on growth characteristics, seed productivity and feed value of triticale in Gyeongbuk province. The experiment was conducted from September 2015 to July 2017, using triticale "Joseong" cultivar of 150 kg of seed/ha and sown at 10 days intervals from different sowing dates ($30^{th}$ September, $10^{th}$, $20^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ October) in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The emergence date in the autumn season was 8 - 18 days after sowing in 2015 and 2016. The heading, flowering and maturing periods were the fastest on $30^{th}$ September compared to the other sowing dates. The average number of stem and panicle per unit area were 409.3 - 428.5 and 330.9 - 334.0 on $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October, which were higher than those sown on $20^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ October, 2015 and 2016, respectively (p < 0.05), and the average number of grain and kernel weight was 47.1 - 48.1 and 2.2 - 2.3 g on $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October, which were higher than the late sowing dates. In case of seed yield as affected by different sowing dates, the highest yield was found on the sowing plot of late September and $10^{th}$ October, which were 5,680 and 5,918 kg/ha, respectively (p < 0.05). However, the average CP content was 10.7%, CF content was 2.8% and TDN content was 85.3. In conclusion, $30^{th}$ September and $10^{th}$ October were the appropriate sowing dates for a forage self-sufficiency system in Gyeongbuk.
There is an increasing frequency in the occurrence of abnormal weather phenomena such as sharp increases and decreases in temperature. Under these weather conditions, the heading time of rice changes unexpectedly, which poses problems in agriculture. Therefore, we investigated the effect of temperature on the heading response at different growth stages in rice. During the period from transplanting to heading, the plants were subjected to different temperature treatments, each for a 9-day period, to observe the heading response. For the heading date analysis, "heading date" was defined as the number of days from transplanting to the appearance of the first spikelet. We found that the influence of temperature increased in the order of rooting stage, followed by meiosis, early tillering, spikelet differentiation, and panicle initiation stage in all ecological types and cultivars. In particular, unlike the results reported previously, the effect of temperature on heading during the photo-sensitive period was very small. Meanwhile, the influence of temperature on vegetative growth response at different growth stages was not consistent with heading response. These results can be used as basic data for predicting the variation in heading date owing to temperature variation at each growth stage. In addition, we propose that the concept of day length should be included in determining the influence of temperature on the photo-sensitive period.

This study was conducted to determine the appropriate seeding dates by verifying the difference in winter survival and productivity of alfalfa according to fall sowing dates in the central area of South Korea. The experiment was conducted for 2 years (2020 and 2021) at the field in the Department of Animal Resources Development, NIAS located in Cheonan. Sowing dates started from September 18 to November 8 with 10 days of intervals during 2020 and 2021; SO1 (September 18), SO2 (September 28), SO3 (October 8), SO4 (October 18), SO5 (October 28), and SO6 (November 8). After sowing, the winter survival rate was measured in the spring of the following year, and the dry matter yield was measured by harvesting at 10% flowering and harvesting five times a year. SO6 failed to winter survival, and SO5 also had a lower winter survival rate than SO1~4 (p<0.05). The average annual dry matter yield of alfalfa linearly decreased with delaying sowing dates (p<0.05). The feed value did not differ in the same year by delaying the sowing date in the same year. These results suggest that sowing date should be started before October 18 to increase winter survival and productivity of alfalfa in the central area of South Korea.

This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics, flowering condition and productivity of introduced annual legumes at paddy field of Seonghwan(Cheonan, Chungnam, Korea) from September 2006 to May 2007. Annual legumes used in this study were hairy vetch(Vicia villsa, Rosa), crimson clover(Trifolium incarnatum, Contea), berseem clover(Trifolium alexandrinum, Alexandria), persian clover(Trifolium resupinatum, Prolific), balansa clover(Trifolium michelianum, Paradona), sweet clover(Melilotus officinalis, Yellow) and forage pea(Pisum sativum, Austrian). Emergency rate after seeding were 90% or more in crimson clover, hairy vetch, forage pea and berseem clover. Wintering of hairy vetch and crimson clover were excellent as 98% and 95%, respectively. Flowering rate of harvesting date(May 10) was 100% in crimson clover, 98% in balansa clover, 5% in persian clover and others were not flowering. Fresh and dry matter yield of crimson clover were highest as 72,556 kg/ha and 16,062 kg/ha, respectively. Crude protein yield of hairy vetch was highest as 2,929 kg/ha but not significant with crimson clover(2,169 kg/ha). TDN yield of crimson clover was highest as 9,007 kg/ha but not significant with hairy vetch(7,366 kg/ha). According to the results from this study, it is suggested that crimson clover would be recommendable for autumn-sowing annual legume at paddy field of Central Provinces.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of maturity at harvest and wilting days on the quality of round baled rye (Secale cereale L.) silage. This study was a $3{\times}3$ factorial arrangement in a split plot design with 3 replicates. The main plot was 3 harvesting dates at the stage of boot (20 Apr.), heading (29 Apr.) and flowering (14 May). The subplot was wilting day : 0 (unwilted), 0.5 and 1 day (0, 1, and 2 days at boot stage). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of rye silage were significantly greater than those of rye before ensiling, but crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were vice versa. Buffering capacity (BC) of rye harvested at flowering stage was decreased from 264 to 202 meq/kg at 1 day wilting, however, it was increased when harvested at boot or heading stage. The pH in wilted silage was the highest while that of flowering stage was the lowest. Water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content of wilting rye was lower than that of unwilted, and the lowest at late harvesting stage. All plots had minimal WSC content for silage fermentation. Wilting treatment and delayed harvesting date caused an increase in dry matter (DM) content of round bale silage. The content of ammonia-N expressed as a portion of total N showed negative correlation with DM content. High quality silage according to ammonia-N content could be obtained from mid-harvest with wilting. There were highly significant differences in each organic acid between harvesting dates and wilting periods. Acetic and butyric acid contents were increased with delayed harvesting and prolonged wilting period, the lactic acid content, however, was decreased. This study demonstrated that harvest of rye from heading to flowering stage with wilting would be a recommendable method for making high quality rye silage using round bale system.
This study was carried out to find out the difference of ripening and growth characteristics among the different florets in same panicle. There were 2 different transplanting date (May 25 and June 10) and 6 varieties were used. Physiological ripening period, ripening speed, 1000 grain weight, germination speed and grain quality were studied among the different florets (1, 5 and 8 days after heading) in same panicle. Physiological ripening period was long in late transplanting, late flowering floret, and late varieties by 3-9 days in Japonica. Ripening speed and 1000 grain weight were high in early transplanting and early flowering florets. There was positive correlation among the ripening speed, 1000 grain weight and a average temperature but negative correlation between the ripening and physiological ripening period. Germination speed was excellent in early flowering floret after heading. There was difference in amylose content within varieties and different flowering grains and there was significant correlation between grain quality and meteorological factors in some varieties.
The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In both years of 1960 and 1961, the flowering times, fading times of flowers, mature times of fruits of 63 chestnut varieties grown at Choosan area, Chon Nam, have been investigated. Almost the ages of trees were 26-year-old and they are growing on the brown forest soil well drained with relatively thick surface soil. 2. Non-significant difference in flowering time by the varieties has been found between the years. The carliests in floweing time are Toyotama-wase, The isho-wase, Asami-wase, Umehira-wase, i.e., bloomed on May, 22, or a little later. 3. The fading dates of flowers of each varieties almost linearly correlated to the flowering date. The blooming period of each varieties was about 10 to 12 days. 4. Linear correlation between mature time and blooming time are observed, i.e., the earlier the blooming time comes, the earlier is the mature time of chestnut fruit. 5. The varieties having the smallest sized seed, are Otomune and Boji-kuri, however, those having the large one, are Ho-gin, Katayama, Ohara-wase.

Lilium lancifolium, which is one of the Korean native lilies, possesses several useful genetic characteristics such as growth vigor, bulbil formation and resistance to Fusarium. Hybridization was performed to insert useful traits of Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland" as the male parent with upward direction and dark brown spotless on the petal into L. lancifolium as the female parent. The rate of pollen germination of L. lancifolium and "Dreamland" were 30% and 60%, respectively. The pollen germination ratio of $F_1$ progenies at flowering date was 25-57%, which is between the parents'pollen germination ratio. The individual flowering time was between 113 days and 131 days after planting. Of 99% of all plants, the leaf shape index was more than five, which means that the leaf shape of $F_1$ plants is more influenced by female than male parent. The flower color was separated into four types. 51.5% of the progenies showed orange and 44.2% showed light orange, respectively. The colors seemed to be highly influenced by female parents. Mixed colors of parents, orange yellow and light yellow orange, were 3.1%, 1.2%, respectively. Flowering directions were segregated by three different ways, upside, side, and downside. Side direction, which is medium type between female and male parent, was 73%. All progenies showed lots of spot on petals except one offspring. The percentage of bulbil formation on leaf axil was 49.4%. Among those, the maximum number of bulbil formation was 25. The mean number of bulbil formation per plant was five.
