  • In many practical applications of the centrifugal fan, the impeller-diffuser interaction noise is considered as a main source of fan noise. The housing for an electric motor is also expected to play an important role on noise propagation because of its complicated configuration. This study investigates the impeller-diffuser interaction noise and its sources by computing three-dimensional, incompressible flow field of the centrifugal fan in motor housing. The effect of motor case on fan noise characteristic is then investigated using the Brinkman penalization method, while the noise source associated with impeller-diffuser interaction is mathematically modeled. It is found that the present methodology combined with mathematical description of noise source provides a fairly good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the motor housing has significant effect on noise characteristics. Finally, aeroacoustic noise prediction for various impeller-diffuser blade count ratios is conducted for noise reduction.

  • In order to confront the increasing air pollution and the tightening emission restrictions, this research developed a diesel engine using DME, the advanced smoke-free alternative fuel. By numerical analysis, flow field, spray, and combustion phenomenon of the DME engine was presented. Using an experimental method, the configuration of the fuel supply system and operation/power performance was tested with the current plunger pump. Most emission performance, especially smoke performance was significantly improved. The possibility of conversion from the current diesel engine into the DME engine was affirmed in this research. However, it was found that the increase of engine RPM and fuel amount need to be properly adjusted through matching the characteristics of fuel and injector for further improvement.

  • The three-dimensional RANS equations were applied to analyze the flow field of a submarine. To validate the code, the DARPA SUBOFF bare hull and an eliipsoid at angles of attack of $10^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$ were simulated and good agreement with experiments was obtained. After the code validation, the flows over the full configuration of DARPA SUBOFF model having a fairwater and four stern appendages were simulated at four angles of attack $(0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ})$ and three yaw angles $(10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ})$ Specifically, the pressure contours and streamlines of fairwater and stern appendage were compared as the angle of attack and yaw angle changed. The variations of hydrodynamic forces were also calculated.

  • A digital in-line holographic particle image velocimetry (HPIV) which can be applied to measure three-dimensional velocity fields of turbulent flows was developed. There are three different implementation methods of HPIV: traditional film-based HPIV, intermediate HPIV and digital HPIV. The traditional film-based HPIV and intermediate HPIV method is rather troublesome to do experiments and takes long calculation time, compared with the digital HPIV, Configuration of the digital in-line HPIV is simple and the data processing routine is similar to conventional 2D PIV methods. The digital HPIV velocity field measurement consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved PTV algorithm to extract the displacement of particle each placed in 3D space. The developed digital in-line HPIV system was applied to a vertical jet flow. The 3D velocity vectors measured by the digital HPIV method in the near field are in a good agreement with 2D PIV results.

  • Long-span bridge decks are often shaped as streamlined to improve the aerodynamic performance of the deck. There are a number of important shaping parameters for a streamlined bridge deck. Their effects on aerodynamics should be well understood for shaping the bridge deck efficiently and for facilitating the bridge deck design procedure. This study examined the effect of various shaping parameters such as the bottom plate slope, width ratio and side ratio on aerodynamic responses of single box streamlined bridge decks by employing unsteady RANS simulation. Steady state responses and flow field were analyzed in detail for wide range of bottom plate slopes, width and side ratios. Then for a particular deck shape Reynolds number effect was investigated by varying its value from $1.65{\times}10^4$ to $25{\times}10^4$. The aerodynamic response showed very high sensitivity to the considered shaping parameters and exhibited high aerodynamic performance for a particular combination of shaping parameters.

  • The configuration of the flow channel on a bipolar plate of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) for efficient reactant supply has great influence on the performance of the fuel cell. Recent demand for higher energy density fuel cells requires an increase in current density at mid voltage range and a decrease in concentration overvoltage at high current density. Therefore, an interdigitated flow channel where mass transfer rate by convection through a gas diffusion layer is greater than the mass transfer by a diffusion mechanism through a gas diffusion layer was recently proposed. This study attempts to analyze the i-V performance, mass transfer and pressure drop in interdigitated flow channels by developing a fully three dimensional simulation model for PEMFC that can deal with anode and cathode flow together. The results indicate that the trade off between performance and pressure loss should be considered for efficient design of flow channels. Although the performance of the fuel cell with interdigitated flow is better than that with conventional flow channels due to a strong mass transfer rate by convection across a gas diffusion layer, there is also an increase in friction due to the strong convection through the porous diffusion layer accompanied by a larger pressure drop along the flow channel. It was evident that the proper selection of the ratio of channel and rib width under counter flow conditions in the fuel cell with interdigitated flow are necessary to optimize the interdigitated flow field design.

  • The flow fields inside a molten Zn pot of continuous hot-chip galvanizing process were investigated experimentally. With varying several parameters including the strip speed Vs, flow rate Q of induction heater. scrapper location and baffle configuration, instantaneous velocity fields were measured using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. Inside the strip region, counter-clockwise rotating flow is dominant. The general flow pattern inside the strip region is nearly not influenced by the strip speed Vs, flow rate Q and the scrapper location. In the exit region, the flow separated from the moving strip due to the existence of a stabilizing roll ascends to the free surface, for the cases of no scrapper and scrapper detached form the roll. On the other hand, the ascending flow to the free surface is decreased, as the flow rate Q of induction heater increases. By installing a baffle around the uprising strip, the flow moving up to the stabilizing roll decreases. In addition, B-type baffle is better than A-type baffle in reducing speed of flow around the stabilizing rolls. However, the flow ascended to the free surface is largely influenced by changing the flow rate Q, and the scrapper location, irrespective of the baffle type.

  • In the present study, squeezing flow of micropolar nanofluid between parallel infinite disks in the presence of magnetic field perpendicular to plane of the disks is taken into account. The constitutive equations that govern the flow configuration are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential with the help of suitable similarity transforms. HAM package BVPh2.0 has been employed to solve the nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. Effects of different emerging parameters like micropolar parameter K, squeezed Reynolds number R, Hartmann number M, Brownian motion parameter Nb, thermophoresis parameter Nt, Lewis number Le for dimensionless velocities, temperature distribution and concentration profile are also discussed graphically. In the presence of strong and weak interaction (i.e. n = 0 and n = 0.5), numerical values of skin friction coefficient, wall stress coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are presented in tabulated form. To check the validity and reliability of the developed algorithm BVPh2.0 a numerical investigation is also a part of this study.

  • Numerical study is conducted to design the high temperature heat exchanger of Stirling engine by using the commercial CFD solver, FLUENT. The Fin-tube type of heat exchanger is designed as a reference model by considering the type of engine which is ${\beta}$-configuration. To find the optimal design of heat exchanger in heat transfer capacity numerical calculation is conducted by changing the shape, the number, and material of reference model in three-dimensional combustion field. Adjusted one-way constant velocity of working fluid that is helium is considered as the representative velocity of oscillating flow. The optimal design of heat exchanger considering the heat transfer capability is suggested by using the calculation results.
