  • In this paper, two new techniques, the pattern filling and the refined flow field regeneration, based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible viscous flow with free surfaces. The gorerning equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The penalty and Newton-Raphson methods are used effectively for finite element formulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the pattern filling technique to select an adequate pattern among five filling patterns at each quadrilateral control volume. By the refined flow field regeneration technique, the new flow field which renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. Using the new thchniques to be developed, the dam-breaking problem has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions versus time have been compared with the reported experimental result.

  • A set of experiments of Counter-Current Flow Limit(CCFL or Flooding) was performed to improve the drawbacks of Wallis' Correlation which neglects the effects of channel size, channel length, injection method and the boundary conditions at the inlet of liquid and gas phase. In these experiments using water and air, the followings were found ; (i) The effects of channel size and length were quite significant. In large tubes(D>20mm), the flooding front occurred at the bottom of the channel and when the gas flow increased the front moved upward ; however, in small tubes(D<20mm), there were no upward movement of flooding front and the flooding just occurred at the liquid inlet. (ii) The effect of water inlet device was not as significant as that of channel length though the inlet boundary conditions could affect the flow development and flooding afterward. (iii) Once the flooding front reached the inlet of water injection device, an newly reduced flow condition was set up and resulted in another flooding corresponding to the new condition.

  • A study on performance of a propeller fan according to the distance between the front plate and the fan was conducted experimentally. Different characteristics of performance were found on the performance curve. Flow measurements using the three dimensional LDV system show that the zone of recirculation exists around the fan. The differences of performance in changes of the distance occurs because the zone of recirculation is much wider at the distance of 24mm than at that of 30mm.

  • The filling pattern and an adaptive grid refinement based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a water dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions with respect to time have been compared with the reported experimental results.

  • Plastic injection mould have two kinds of trouble, one is in mould another in injection parts. Most of defects of the former take the cause in a design like in structure and working, the later weld line, transforming, sink mark, burning, flow mark, scratching, shading, black hole and so on. Most of problems of the later is difficult for making a clear definitely the reason of defects because of complexible. The purpose of this paper is to improve the quality of plastic injection mould and parts with inquiring the counter plan and rouble of the part of Flat TV Front Cover by flow control method and gas- assisted injection moulding. For minimizing defects from injection moulding parts, this paper was investigated with using computer aided injection mold filling simulations. Based on these numerical results, I established guidelines mould design and injection processing condition. As a results I got the improve of quality, minimizing surface defects moulded parts and troubles in mould.

  • The major problems of a plastic injection mould can be devided into two kinds, one is in mould another in injected parts. Most of defects of the former comes from mould design, such as, structure and working. The latter are weld line, warpage, sink mark, burning, flow mark, scratching, shading, black hole and so on. Most of problems in injection molding are difficult to find the reason because of complexity. The purpose of this paper is to improve the quality of plastic injection mould and parts with inquiring the counter plan and analizing troubles of the part of Flat TV Front Cover by flow control method and gas-assisted injection moulding. For minimizing defects of the injection moulded parts, computer aided simulation method for injection mould filling was used. Based on these numerical results, the guidelines of mould design and injection processing condition were established. • The shell and tube heat exchanger is an essential part of a power plant for recovering transfer heat between the feed water of a boiler and the wasted heat. The baffles are also an important element inside the heat exchanger. Internal materials influence the flow pattern in the bed. The influence of baffles in the velocity profiles was observed using a three-dimensional PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) around baffles in a horizontal circular tube. The velocity of the particles was measured before the baffle and between them in the test tube. Results show that the velocity vectors near the front baffle flow along the vertical wall, and then concentrate on the upper opening of the front baffle. The velocity profiles circulate in the front and rear baffle. These profiles are related to the Reynolds number (Re) or the flow intensity. Velocity profiles at lower Re number showed complicated mixing to obtain the velocities and concentrate on the lower opening of the rear baffle as front wall. Numerical simulations were performed to investigate the effects of the baffle and obtain the velocity profiles between the two baffles. In this study, a commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.3.21 with the turbulent flow modeling, k-${\epsilon}$ are adopted. The path line and local axial velocities are calculated between two baffles using this program.

  • Recently, there have been efforts to construct hybrids among the existing methodologies for multiphase flow such as VOF, Level Set, and Front Tracking with the intention of facilitating simulations of general three-dimensional problems. As one of the hybrid method, we have developed the Level Contour Reconstruction Method (LCRM) for general three-dimensional multiphase flows including phase change. The main idea was focused on simplicity and a robust algorithm especially for the three-dimensional case. It combines characteristics of both Front Tracking and Level Set methods. While retaining an explicitly tracked interface using interfacial elements, the calculation of a vector distance function plays a crucial role in the periodic reconstruction of the interface elements in the LCRM method to maintain excellent mass conservation and interface fidelity. In addition, compact curvature formulation is incorporated for the calculation of the surface tension force thereby reducing parasitic currents to a negligible level.

  • Injection molded plastic parts have many surface detects: weld line, sink mark, flow mark, gloss, shading, scratching, and so on. Because these surface faults have not been accepted esthetically, plastic parts are Produced through painting or texturing. The purpose of this paper is to develop a paintless molded part of TV Mask Front by flow control method and gas-assisted injection molding. In order to minimize defects from injection molding, this study was carried out using computer aided injection mold filling simulations using MF/FLOW and MF/GAS. Based on these numerical results, we developed FR(Flame Retardant) HIPS and established guidelines of part design, mold design, and Processing conditions. We have achieved of cost sayings, improvement of productivity, and utilization of recycling by eliminating surface defects and painting process.
