  • A multi-perforated tube is generally installed between the muffler inlet and in front of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the integrated urea-SCR muffler system in order to disperse the urea-water solution spray uniformly and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, which would result in an increase nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) reduction efficiency and a decrease in the ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the internal flow characteristics were investigated analytically by using a general-purpose commercial software package. From the results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected the generation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst. To verify the analytical results, engine tests were carried out in the ESC and ETC modes. Results of these tests indicated that the larger flow model in the longitudinal direction showed the highest NOx reduction efficiency, which was a good agreement with the analytical results.

  • As the use of public transportation increases, many researches are being carried out to increase the fuel economy of car. The goal of this study is to design a front body in order to increase the fuel economy of car through three models of cars. All models were designed with CATIA program and the flow analyses on the air outside car by model were carried out with ANSYS program. At the driving speed of 90km/h, the longer the body, the less air resistance it received. So, it is thought that there is the effect to increase fuel economy. Through this study, it can be helpful to design the front car body that can maximize train efficiency. By utilizing the design data on flow analysis according to the position of radiator inside car in this study, the esthetic sense can be given by being grafted onto the real automotive part.

  • The conversion efficiency, durability and pressure drop of the automotive exhaust catalysts are dependent on the flow distribution within the substrate. Conventional porous medium approaches assuming monolith resistance based on the one-dimensional laminar flow for simulating the flow through the automotive exhaust catalysts over-predict the flow uniformity in the monolith. In this study, additional pressure loss is also considered by accounting for entrance effects due to the oblique flow incident on the front face of monolith as a consequence of flow separation and recirculation within the diffuser. The incorporation of an additional pressure loss improves the predictions for the maximum flow velocity within the substrate. An numerical study has also been conducted for the three-dimensional unsteady incompressible non-reacting flow inside various dual-monolith catalytic converters for the rapid acceleration/deceleration driving.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation to visualize cross-sectional two-phase flow structure and identify liquid-gas interface for condensation of steam at a low mass flux in a slightly inclined tube using the axial-viewing technique, which permits to look directly into flow during condensation of steam. In this technique, two-phase flow is viewed along the axis of a pipe by locating a high-speed video camera in front of a viewer that is fitted at the outlet of the pipe. A short section of the pipe is illuminated and is recorded through the viewer, which is kept free of liquid by mildly introducing air. Experiments were conducted in a pipe of 19.05 mm in inner diameter at atmospheric pressure. Cross-sectional two-phase flow structure is obtained at a steam mass flux of $2.62kg/m^2s$ as a function of steam quality in the range from 0.5 to 0.9. The results show that stratified-wavy flow is a unique flow pattern observed in the scope of the present study. Condensate film thickness, stratification angle and void fraction were measured from the obtained flow structure images. Finally, heat transfer coefficient was calculated using the measurement data and discussed in comparison with existing correlations.

  • The results of analyzing the hydrographic observations in the southwestern sea of Jeju Island in the last 10 days of August 1999 to investigate the characteristics of oceanic front area appeared in the East China Sea in August from is summarized as follows: In Line A, a front appears at Station A5 of 124°E and 31°30'N, showing relatively uniform density of 21.4 to 22.1 in the surface layer of 50m depth, which is distinguished from 22.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean. In Line B, a front also appears at Station B6 of 124°E and 33°N, of which density is distinguished from 20.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean as In Line A. As a result, the front area caused by fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in the East China Sea is formed at 124°E and 124°30'in the direction of east and northeast from Yangtze River, respectively. Nutrient concentrations in the study area are characterized by higher density in the side of China and by clear density difference between the upper and the lower layers in the side of open ocean, while by uniformly lower density concentration between the upper and the lower layers in the front area. Chlorophyll-α concentrations is high in the sides of China and open ocean, while low in the front area. Judging from the above results, the productivity in the front area is lower according to the inactivity of phytoplankton due to increased flow from vertical mixing between the upper layer and the lower layer. Also, the front area in the East China Sea in summer may be moved towards the adjacent sea of Jeju Island by increasing fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in summer.

  • OH radical concentration have been measured in a methane-air partially premixed flames using PLIF. Excitation lines were selected $Q_{1}(6)$ branch, (1,0) band. The system is consisted of Nd:YAG laser, dye laser and frequency doubler to make pump beam for OH radical. On the direct photographs, flame height increases as fuel flow rate and equivalence ratio increase. And on the PLIF images, OH radical is distributed from premixed flame front to nonpremixed flame front through the flame structure with all equivalence ratio. OH overall concentrations increase with equivalence ratio. At the stoichiometric equivalence ratio, the peak of OH radical concentration exists strongly near the inner cone. As equivalence ratio is changed to richer, OH radical distribution goes thinly and the peak is increased as longitudinal direction. As the flow goes to the downstream, OH radical concentration decreases and broadens, because OH radical reacts with another species after OH formation at the initial oxidization. This phenomenon resembles radial distribution. At the l00cc fuel flowrate, the radial peak of OH radical exists from x/R=l.0 to 1.5.

  • The objective of the study was to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and flow in 2-dimensional impinging air jet system, in which trapezoid rods have been set up in front of impinging plate in order to increase heat transfer. Experiments were carried out first using without the rods to establish the baseline heat transfer performance. And this result compared with the experimentation with rods. When rods are installed in front of the impinging plate, the acceleration of the flow and the eddies due to the rods seem to contribute to the heat transfer enhancement. Heat transfer performance was best under the condition of C=1 n and as the pitch is 30 mm. In this case, maximum rate of heat transfer augmentation is about 1.62 times greater compared to that without trapezoid rods.

  • Recent developments such as concern over global warming, depletion of fossil fuels and increase in energy demands by the increasing world population has eventually lead to mass production of electricity using renewable sources. Apart from wind and solar, ocean holds tremendous amount of untapped energy in forms such as geothermal vents, tides and waves. The current study looks at generating power using waves and the focus is on the primary energy conversion (first stage conversion) of incoming waves for two different models. Observation of flow characteristics, pressure and the velocity in the augmentation channel as well as the front guide nozzle are presented in the paper. A numerical wave tank was utilized to generate waves of desired properties and later the turbine section was integrated. The augmentation channel consisted of a front nozzle, rear nozzle and an internal fluid region representing the turbine housing. The analysis was performed using the commercial CFD code.

  • Five parameters such as the entrance size of the front wall, conduit size, wave period, wave height and the width of water pool were selected to estimate the inflow rate, which is basic and essential input data to design seawater exchange breakwater with a submerged mound by conducting hydraulic model experiments. In the results of multiple regression analysis, log-log equation showed a good agreement rather than linear equation and the estimation of inflow rate was well done with only two parameters except entrance size of the front wall, wave period and the width of water pool. Finally, non-dimensional flow rate equation is derived.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of jet flow and heat transfer caused by trapezoid rods array in impinging jet system. In this study, trapezoid rods have been set up in front of flat plate to serve as a turbulence promoter. The bottom width of trapezoid rod was W=4, 8mm and oblique angle were $80^{\circ}$. The space from rods to the heating surface was C=1, 2, 4mm, the pitch between each rods was P=30, 40, 50mm, and the distance from nozzle exit to flat plate was H=100, 500mm. This results were compared with the case without trapezoid rods. As a result, when rods are installed in front of the impinging plate, the acceleration of the jet flow and the eddies due to the rods seem to contribute to the heat transfer enhancement. Among test conditions, the heat transfer performance was best for the condition of W=8mm, C=1mm, P=30mm and H/B=10. The maximum heat transfer rate is about 1.9 times larger than that without trapezoid rods.
