Computation of the Bow Deck Design Pressure against the Green Water Impact (Green Water 충격에 대비한 선수갑판 설계압력의 산출)

  • Green water impact may sometimes cause some structure damages on ship's bow deck. Prediction of proper design pressure against the green water impact is an essential task to prevent the possible damages on bow deck. This paper presents a computational method of the bow deck's design pressure against the green water impact. Large heave and pitch motions of ship are calculated by the time domain nonlinear strip method. Green water flow and pressure on bow deck are simulated by the predictor-corrector second kind upstream finite difference method. This green water simulation method is based on the shallow water wave equations expanded for moving bottom conditions. For various kind of ships such as container ship, VLCC, oil tanker and bulk carrier, the green water design pressures on bow deck are computed and discussed. Also, the obtained results of design pressure on bow deck are compared with those of the classification society rules and discussed.

Study on the Evaluation Method for EEDI of the Small Vessel using CFD (CFD 기반 소형 선박의 EEDI 평가 방법에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed to predict the resistance and propulsion performance of a ship using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a database as well as establish an assessment method for the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) using the results. First, the total resistance of the studied ship is obtained using CFD. A flow analysis is conducted with the free surface and trim and sinkage using a commercial CFD code (STAR-CCM+). The effective power of the ship is assessed based on the CFD results. The quasi-propulsive efficiency is calculated from an empirical prediction equation using experimental data and similar material. Finally, a general calculation program for the EEDI is established based on the hydrodynamic results, ship information for principal particulars, conversion factor of $CO_2$ for fuels, and fuel consumption.

Prediction of air inflow during central venous catheter insertion: experimental study (중심정맥관 삽입 시 발생하는 공기유입량의 예측: 실험연구)

  • Objective: This study examined the incidence and amount of air inflow during central venous catheter (CVC) insertion. Methods: This study was an experimental study aimed at designing an apparatus to implement blood vessel and blood flow in the human body. A 1.5-m long core tube with a Teflon tube, suction rubber tube, and polyvinyl chloride tube were made. This core tube was assumed to be the blood vessel of the human body. Blood was replaced with a saline solution. The saline solution was placed higher than the core tube and flowed into the inside of the tube by gravity. The CVC was injected 15-cm deep into the core tube. The air was collected through a 3-way valve into the upper tube. The experiments were carried out by differentiating the pressure in the tube, CVC insertion step, and diameter of the end of the catheter. The experiment was repeated 10 times under the same conditions. Results: The amount of air decreased with increasing pressure applied to the tube. Air was not generated when the syringe needle was injected, and the amount of air increased with increasing size of the distal end catheter. Conclusion: To minimize the possibility of air embolism, it is necessary to close the distal end catheter at the earliest point as soon as possible.

AANet: Adjacency auxiliary network for salient object detection

  • At present, deep convolution network-based salient object detection (SOD) has achieved impressive performance. However, it is still a challenging problem to make full use of the multi-scale information of the extracted features and which appropriate feature fusion method is adopted to process feature mapping. In this paper, we propose a new adjacency auxiliary network (AANet) based on multi-scale feature fusion for SOD. Firstly, we design the parallel connection feature enhancement module (PFEM) for each layer of feature extraction, which improves the feature density by connecting different dilated convolution branches in parallel, and add channel attention flow to fully extract the context information of features. Then the adjacent layer features with close degree of abstraction but different characteristic properties are fused through the adjacent auxiliary module (AAM) to eliminate the ambiguity and noise of the features. Besides, in order to refine the features effectively to get more accurate object boundaries, we design adjacency decoder (AAM_D) based on adjacency auxiliary module (AAM), which concatenates the features of adjacent layers, extracts their spatial attention, and then combines them with the output of AAM. The outputs of AAM_D features with semantic information and spatial detail obtained from each feature are used as salient prediction maps for multi-level feature joint supervising. Experiment results on six benchmark SOD datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms similar previous methods.

Three-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Driftwood Accumulation and Behavior Around Bridge Piers (교각 주변 유목 집적 및 거동 특성 3차원 수치모의)

  • The prediction and evaluation of driftwood accumulation around river-crossing structures are essential because driftwood accumulation increases during flood disasters. In this study, the driftwood accumulation and behavior around bridge piers were evaluated via a numerical model that could be employed to analyze three-dimensional turbulent flow and driftwood motion. The moving particle semi-implicit-based model for driftwood motion was sensitive to the number of spheres. The numerical results showed that the approach velocity and the ratio of driftwood length to pier width were the key factors influencing driftwood accumulation, whereas the driftwood density had only a minor influence. Overall, it is expected that this study will contribute to the development of improved risk evaluation indexes for assessing driftwood accumulation around river-crossing structures.

  • On the initial design process of a scramjet vehicle such as the trajectory prediction, it is inevitable to estimate the aerodynamic performance of a three-dimensional effect. Despite the necessity of intensive computing for the three-dimensional model, it is inefficient in predicting a wide range of aerodynamic performance. In this study, an engineering model for aerodynamic performance was developed based on two-dimensional computational fluid analysis and linearized supersonic inviscid flow theory. Correspondingly, the three-dimension aerodynamic performance relations are presented based on the two-dimensional results. And the additional three-dimensional computation was performed to evaluate the adequacy for the extended relations.

Establishment of flood forecasting and warning system in the un-gauged small and medium watershed through ODA (ODA사업을 통한 미계측 중소하천 유역 홍수예경보시스템 구축)

  • As part of the National Disaster Management Research Institute's Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects for transferring new technologies in the field of disaster-safety management, a flood forecasting and warning system was established in 2019 targeting the Borikhan in the Namxan River Basin in Bolikhamxai Province, Laos. In the target area, which is an ungauged small and medium river basin, observation stations for real-time monitoring of rainfall and runoff and alarm stations were installed, and a software that performs real-time data management and flood forecasting and warning functions was also developed. In order to establish a flood warning standard and develop a nomograph for flood prediction, hydraulic and hydrological analysis was performed based on the 30-year annual maximum daily rainfall data and river morphology survey results in the target area. This paper introduces the process and methodology used in this study, and presents the results of the system's applicability review based on the data observed and collected in 2020 after system installation.

  • In this work, we have developed a 1D network model aimed at predicting eigenvalues for resonance frequency analysis in a lab-scale industrial gas turbine single nozzle combustion system. Modern industrial gas turbines generally adopt combustors with very complex geometry and flow path to meet various design requirements simultaneously. The current study has developed a network model for combustion systems with backflow at the same axial location. The modeling results of resonance frequencies and mode distributions for a given system using the network model were validated from comparisons with prediction results using a 3D Helmholtz solver.

Prediction of Oil Outflows from Damaged Ships using CFD Simulations (손상 선박의 기름 유출량 예측을 위한 CFD 시뮬레이션)

  • This paper presents the numerical estimation results of oil outflows from damaged single-hull and double-hull ships by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. A CFD method for multi-phase flow analysis was used, and the effects of numerical parameters on oil flows was investigated. Numerical simulations were conducted to predict the changes in oil outflows under various damage conditions owing to grounding or collision accidents and verified through available experimental results. The present numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results according to the geometrical characteristics of single and double hulls. In particular, the oil outflows from double hulls accompanying complex interactions between water and oil were reasonably predicted a shown in the experiment. This study established a reliable CFD technique necessary for estimating the oil outflows of damaged ships.

  • Mist-CVD is known to have advantages of low cost and high productivity method since the precursor solution is misting with an ultrasonic generator and reacted on the substrate under vacuum-free conditions of atmospheric pressure. However, since the deposition distribution is not uniform, various efforts have been made to derive optimal conditions by changing the angle of the substrate and the position of the outlet to improve the result of the preceding study. Therefore, in this study, a deposition distribution uniformity model was derived through the shape and position of the substrate support and the conditions of inlet flow rate using the particle tracking method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of analysis were compared with the previous studies through experiment. It was confirmed that the rate of deposition area was improved from 38.7% to 100%, and the rate of deposition uniformity was 79.07% which was higher than the predicted result of simulation. Particle tracking method can reduce trial and error in experiments and can be considered as a reliable prediction method.
