Questionnaire Survey on the Risk Perception in the Istanbul Strait

  • There are enormous challenges in the Istanbul Strait- one of the most important, congested and narrow waterways in the world - from the view point of risk determination and risk mitigation for the local traffic. Previously several traffic parameters such as; traffic volume for local vessels, traffic flow and potential encounters of local traffic, in addition to the possibility of collision, were investigated in order to determine the degree of dangers in the southern entrance of the Istanbul Strait. Furthermore, risky zones were also determined in this waterway. On the basis of the results of those, a group of expert was surveyed. These experts were pilots, Vessel Traffic Services Operators (VTS-O), Local Traffic Vessel Captains and Master Mariners who had several experience of navigation through the Istanbul Strait. In order to assess experts perceptions of danger and to propose further studies based on this survey. The questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program version 13.0. Finally, some differences and/or shares on risk perceptions of expert in the Istanbul Strait are considered.

Discrete Element Method using the Superposed Rigid-Rod Model for the Dynamic Behavior of Needle-Shaped Powder with a High Aspect Ratio (높은 세장비를 가진 침상형 입자의 동적 거동 해석을 위한 중첩형 강체막대모델을 이용한 이산요소법)

  • One problem of the Discrete Element Method is the assumption of a spherical particle shape, which reduces the computing time but significantly limits the application of the DEM to analysis. This limitation can be overcome by a recently developed rigid-rod model. However, the rigid-rod model has an essential problem related with friction: it always contains friction error because of the bumpy surface. To overcome this issue, we suggest a superposed rigid-rod model in this paper. The superposed rigid-rod model is notably consistent with the theoretical value in terms of the velocity and angular velocity after the collision. The estimated error is negligible(less than 2%). Then, the developed model is applied to hopper discharging. The developed model shows no problem in the discharging flow from the hopper.

  • The finite element programs have been developed for structure, collision, flow, dynamics, heat transfer, acoustics, electromagnetism, MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), and etc. These programs can be classified as either "package" program or "single purpose" program. Single purpose programs usually have convenient and powerful functions, but these programs have limited expandability to different fields of analysis. Therefore, the method to converter the analysis results of single purpose program to other programs is needed. In the research, multi-body data conversion methods of 1) finite element model and 2) solid model were created to convert fluid analysis result of CFD-ACE+ to ANSYS data structure. Automatic boundary condition algorithms were developed for blade, and finite element model was compared with solid model. It is expected that, by sealess data transfer, the Multi-body Data Conversion Program could reduce the development period of torque converters.

  • The satellite payloaded on the 2nd stage of KSLV-I is planned to perform CCAM(Contamination and Collision Avoidance Maneuver) not to collide with KM(Kick Motor). At the moment, the satellite should pass through low density environment not to be contaminated by KM plume due to residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the flow field of KM plume by residual thrust. In this paper, DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo) method, which is widely accepted to simulate in rarefied regime, is used to compute the density field of KM plume by residual thrust and the result of DSMC simulation was compared with that of FLUENT to validate it.

  • In this paper, we propose a transmission power control scheme for performance improvement of VANET using STPC algorithm considering traffic-flow model. In traffic congestion, a transmission power between car and car increases the collision probability of control messages, which causes the problems to decrease the performance of VANET. The proposed scheme is evaluated by OPNet modeler 16.0 for analyzing its performance and effectiveness in terms of end-to-end delays in hops, packet success probability, and throughput. The simulation result show that the proposed scheme reduces a delay in hops and increases high packet transmission success ratio. Furthermore, a throughput under high density traffic is improved effectively.

  • The spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner are investigated. This system is generally operated at an oxidizerfuel mixture ratio of 50. The spray quality and mixing performance are very important for safe combustion. To know the spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner, we have designed various swirl injectors and measured droplet velocity and size by the PDPA system. The flow discharge coefficient of the fuel orifice is $0.12{\sim}0.21$, oxidizer orifice discharge coefficient is $0.16{\sim}0.28$. From the spray visualization, fuel nozzle spray angle is $15^{\circ}{\sim}25^{\circ}$, oxidizer nozzle spray angle is $65^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ and combined spray angle is reduced $2^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ compared to the oxidizer nozzle only case. From the PDPA measurement, droplet SMD is $175\;{\mu}m$ at 50 mm and $190\;{\mu}m$ at 100 mm of variant 1 combined case. The number concentration measurement revealed the reason of the droplet diameter increasement with distance. That is due to drop coalescence results from collision of drops which is occurred in dense sprays at a long distance from nozzle orifice exit.

A Study on the Spacer Installation Method for 2-Conductor Bundle Transmission Lines (2도체 송전선로의 스페이서 취부방식 연구)

  • Overhead transmission lines are classified by the number of sub conductors per phase. Korean transmission lines use two, four, or six-conductor bundle. Bundle of conductors must have spacers or spacer dampers which keep the proper distance between sub conductors. They can prevent conductors from being vibrated or twisted due to the wind. As for the two-conductor bundle, alternating current flow generates absorption force between sub conductors which may cause a collision of sub conductors. To prevent sub conductors from being vibrated, twisted, and collided, spacer or spacer damper installation method is designed considering vibration characteristics of sub conductors. We have spacer installation method for four or six-conductor bundle lines. However, we don't have it for two-conductor bundle ones. So we have installed spacers at regular intervals in two-conductor bundle lines, and it caused rigid body oscillation of conductors due to the wind which made a flashover between conductors. This paper introduces a vibration characteristic analysis of two-conductor bundle and proposes a spacer installation method for two-conductor bundle lines.

  • In response to growing environmental and collision-safety concerns, the automotive industry has gradually used high-strength and ultla-high-strength steels to reduce the weight of automobiles. In order to overcome inherent process disadvantages of these materials such as poor formability and high springback at room temperature, hot forming has recently been developed and adopted to produce some important structural parts in automobiles. This method enables manufacturing of components with complex geometric shapes with minimal springback. In addition, a quenching process may enhance the material strength by more than two times. This paper investigates mechanical and forming characteristics of high-strength boron-alloyed steel with hot forming, in terms of hardness, microstructure, residual stress, and springback. In order to compare with experimental results, a finite element analysis of hot forming process coupled with phase transformation and heat transfer was carried out using DEFORM-3D V6.1 and also, to predict high temperature mechanical properties and flow curves for different phases, a material properties modeler, JMatPro was used.

An Effects of $CO_2$ Addition on Flame Structure in a Non-premixed Counterflow Flame (비예혼합 대향류 화염에서 $CO_2$ 첨가가 화염 구조에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • A numerical study was conducted to have the effect of $CO_2$ addition to fuel on the chemical reaction mechanism with the change of the initial concentration of $CO_2$ and the axial velocity gradient. From this study, it was found that there were two serious effects of $CO_2$ addition on a non-premixed flame ; a diluent effect by the reactive species reduction and chemical effect of the breakdown of $CO_2$ by the third-body collision and thermal dissociation. Especially, the chemical effect was serious at the lower velocity gradient of the axial flow. It was certain that the mole fraction profile of $CO_2$ was deflected and CO was increased with the initial concentration of $CO_2$. It was also ascertained that the breakdown of $CO_2$ would cause the increasing of CO mole fraction at the reaction region. It was also found that the addition of $CO_2$ did not alter the basic skeleton of $H_2-O_2$ reaction mechanism, but contributed to the formation and destruction of hydrocarbon products such as HCO. The conversion of CO was also suppressed and $CO_2$ played a role of a dilution in the reaction zone at the higher axial velocity gradient.

Dynamic Effects for Crushing Strength of Rectangular Tubular Members (사각 튜브 부재의 압괴강도에 대한 동적 영향 평가)

  • When a thin walled member is subjected to compression in a condition such as collision, the energy is mainly absorbed by axial crumpling. In this case, dynamic crushing strength of the member is increased due to the effects of strain-rate compared with the static strength, even though the inertia effect is neglected. In this paper, the method of predicting the static crushing for tubular members is presented using the kinematic method of plasticity. Since, a predicted crushing load, taking account of the dynamic yield stress, usually overestimates the effects of strain-rate, the average plastic flow stress for the effects of strain-rate is used to obtain the dynamic crushing load for tubular members. The analytical results are compared with the experiments published in references, and a good correlation is observed.
