In this research, biological treatability test was conduced using seawater flocculated tannery wastewater by fixed biofilm reactor. During one cycle, the removal efficiency of organic corbon obtained with fixed biofilm process for treating tannery wastewater was considerably greater than that with activated sludge process. As the hydraulic retention time increased form 0.5day to 4day, removal efficiency of organic carbon was increased from 72% to 87.3%. Attached biomass in media increased with influent organic loading up to 29g MLSS/L, that could reduce the specific organic loading rate. The continual measurement of attached biomass was possible for the operation of the biofilm reactor. Equal and low nitrication rates were observed in both suspended growth activated sludge process and fixed biofilm process, despite commercial nitrifier was seeded. Through the process of treating the tannery wastewater, EC50 values which is measured by the use of Ceriopdaphnia dubia, were decreased to the extent of 50% after treatment of seawater flocculation and of 83% after biological treatment, respectively, compared to those of the untreated wastewater.
In order to evaluate primary clarifier performance on TSS(Total Suspended solids) removal, four different sampling sets were collected as part of this study; (1) weekly test, (2) the diurnal sampling, (3) the settling velocity distribution sampling. Primary effluent TSS($TSS_{PE}$) and non settleable TSS($TSS_{NON}$) concentrations were averaged 160 and 75.5 mg/L, respectively. These data suggest approximately 85 mg/L TSS can be removed more. Average $TSS_{NON}$, $TSS_{PE}$, and Dispersed TSS(DTSS) concentrations(75.5, 160, and 104 mg/L, respectively) suggest that 28.5 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor flocculation, whereas 56 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor hydraulics within primary clarifier. In this study, equations for maximum TSS removal efficiency and effluent TSS concentration were suggested and compared with experimented data.
For the practical application and development of biopolymer flocculant Biopol32 produced by Pseudomonas sp. GP32, its flocculation effect on wastewater from food processing, slaughter houses, and the dyeing industry was investigated. In the food processing wastewater, Biopol32 led to a chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction rate of 70% and a suspended solid (SS) removal rate of 49% at pH 6.0. In the slaughter house wastewater at pH 4.0, a COD reduction rate of 61% and SS removal rate of 91% were observed, and in the dyeing wastewater, the rates were 72% and 92%, respectively, at pH 5.0. The size of floc formed during the flocculation process was 10 mm at a final concentration of 20 ppm, and the dehydration efficiency was 62%. In both the bioflocculant Biopol32 group and a PAA synthetic flocculant group, optimal flocculant concentration that yielded the best overall dehydration efficiency was 20 ppm, and, at this concentration, the shortest filtration time to reach the natural critical moisture content of 78.1% was attained.
In order to treat the landfill leachate, $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ system connected with biological treatment was investigated, and proper pretreatment methods were examined to reduce the load on the system considering economical and technical efficiency. It was more profitable to put $H_2O_2$ into the system in the early stage for the sample which was treated with $H_2SO_4$ to decrease alkalinity and with $FeCl_3-6H_2O$ flocculation. Because the required reaction time run up by increasing $H_2O_2$ input amount, though the COD was reduced slightly, the optimal $H_2O_2$ input amount should be determined for the desired COD and the economical efficiency. The appropriate way to get the lowest COD in the shortest time was the method to treat the sample which was controlled to pH 3.5 after adjusting to pH 12 and put 500 ppm $H_2O_2$ into the system. In that case, to increase $H_2O_2$ input amount was not profitable for the system efficiency. The sufficient photocatalytic excited time was required to reduce the photocatalytic decomposition time for the sample which was gone through the alkali state.
A lipid-enriched strain of Botryococcus braunii (UTEX 572) was cultivated in a semi-batch aeration tank to enhance biomass as well as to develop intracellular lipids and fatty acids. A 30 day period of incubation produced 1.39 g/L of biomass and 0.31 g/L of total lipids in the biomass. The grown biomass was pre-treated using several methods to extract the total lipid content efficiently: ultrasonication was found to yield the highest percentage of lipids-namely 19.8% per biomass. Direct heating of biomass in an autoclave also showed better performance than when using only conventional solvent extraction. To enhance the biomass harvest and lipid extraction efficiency, coagulation and flocculation steps were added to the extraction process. It is noteworthy that not only the solvent type but also the solvent/biomass ratio greatly affected efficiency. In addition, the moisture content of the harvested(wet) biomass affected the efficiency significantly. This study elucidated the need for future research on optimizing this extraction process.
The effects of activated carbon originated Ballasted Flocculant (BF) on the settleability of activated sludge and the recovery of BF by Hydro-cyclone (HC) were analyzed experimentally. Two kinds of BF (M-I: 125-250 ㎛, M-II: 250-425 ㎛ in dia.) and three kinds of activated sludges with different SS concentration (2,300-7,100 mg/L) were applied for this study. With the dosage variation of BF from 0.14 to 1.3 g-BF/g-SS, we could obtain 24-31% improvement in SV30 (Sludge Volume after 30min sedimentation) for the lowest SS concentration sludge (2,300 mg/L). Whereas the SV30 improvement was much higher as 44-48% for the highest SS concentration sludge (7,100 mg/L). The settling characteristics of the sludge with BF followed Vesilind model the best among three models (Vesilind, Takacs and Cho model). HC could effectively separate BF with the separation efficiency of 70-90% and over 95% separation efficiency could be obtained when the HC was applied twice.

Results obtained from this research showed that the anaerobic contact process was applicable to pear waste with COD removal efficiencies of up to $95\%$ depending on conditions, provided ammonium and phosphate salts were added as well as other nutrients, present in the commercial fertilizer, Milorganite or in yeast extract. These latter materials were required in minimum concentrations of 5 and 1.5 g/L, respectively, in the feed independent of HRT and volatile solids loading rate, with part of the effect due to the mineral fraction. Digestion was satisfactory over the whole range of volatile solids loading rates and liquid retention time of 30 to 0.5 days tested, although treatment efficiency dropped off noticeably between 1 and 0.5 day liquid retention time because of poorer flocculation and separation of anaerobic bacteria. Settling of anaerobic bacteria including methane producing bacteria was related to settling of mixed liquor suspended solids only at 1 to 5 days liquid retention times, at other liquid retention times anaerobic microorganism settled markedly less efficiently than mixed liquor suspended solids. Further studies are being made to provide information of practical and basic interest. Data on the composition of the active fraction of yeast extract might solve many practical nutrient problems encountered with the anaerobic contact process and improve its economics. Further improvement in the flocculation and settling of anaerobic bacteria as well as other bacteria would improve overall performance and allow the use of shorter liquid retention times with dilute waste. Knowledge about the numbers of methane formers present would allow a degree of understanding and control of the process not presently attainable.
Improvement of the solid-liquid separation efficiency in the secondary sedimentation tank of the biological treatment process, is known to be increasing effectiveness of the overall system operation. Sewage treatment plant effluent SS is composed of most organic substances. In order to reduce the SS component in the secondary sedimentation tank discharge, fine SS components constituting the heterogeneous should be increased by its own aggregation (self flocculation), so that can be deleted through their precipitation. So, it is improved through using the installation of double rectification wall in this secondary tank. In case, sewage is rapidly increased due to the daily change of the influent water, it was confirmed that suspended solids caused by the impact load are processed stably. Therefore, there is a need for a facility installation which can be its own aggregation for reduction suspended solids in secondary sedimentation tank.

This research is focused on coagulation and sand filtration process as a pretreatment of RO seawater desalination. RO systems require sufficient and reliable pretreatment process to produce superior quality of RO feedwater that can mitigate RO membrane fouling. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of coagulation and filtration process under various experimental conditions including different coagulant dose, flocculation mixing intensity and time, turbidity, and filtration rate. The experimental results showed that the optimum pretreatment conditions resulting in lower SDI value suitable for RO feedwater were coagulation pH 6.5, raw water turbidity greater than 4 NTU, and media bed depth greater than 550 mm. However, flocculation mixing intensity, coagulant dose, and filtration rate relatively affected little on the filtration efficiency.
Magnetic separation technology is an efficient and environmentally friendly technology. Compared with the traditional wastewater treatment technology, the magnetic separation technology has its unique advantages and characteristics, and has been widely applied in the field of wastewater treatment. In particular, the emergence of superconducting magnetic separation technology makes possible for high application potential and value. In this paper, which through consulting with the literatures of Korea, Chinese, United States and other countries, the magnetic separation technology applied to wastewater treatment was mainly divided into direct application of magnetic field, flocculation, adsorption, catalysis and separation coupling technology. Advantages and limitations of the magnetic separation technology in sewage treatment and its future development were also studied. Currently, magnetic separation technology needs to be studied for additional improvement in processing mechanism, design optimization of magnetic carrier and magnetic separator, and overcoming engineering application lag. The selection, optimization and manufacturing of cheap magnetic beads, highly adsorbed and easily desorbed magnetic beads, specific magnetic beads, nanocomposite magnetic beads and the research of magnetic beads recovery technology will be hot application of the magnetic separation technology based on the magnetic carriers in wastewater treatment. In order to further reduce the investment and operation costs and to promote the application of engineering, it is necessary to strengthen the research and development of high field strength using inexpensive and energy-saving magnet materials, specifically through design and development of new high efficiency magnetic separators/filters, magnetic separators and superconducting magnetic separators.
