In recent years, ear has emerged as a new biometric trait, because it has advantage of higher user acceptance than fingerprint and can be captured at remote distance in an indoor or outdoor environment. This paper proposes an individual identification method using ear region based on SIFT(shift invariant feature transform). Unlike most of the previous studies using rectangle shape for extracting a region of interest(ROI), this study sets an ROI as a flexible expanded region including ear. It also presents an effective extraction and matching method for SIFT keypoints. Experiments for evaluating the performance of the proposed method were performed on IITD public database. It showed correct identification rate of 98.89%, and it showed 98.44% with a deformed dataset of 20% occlusion. These results show that the proposed method is effective in ear recognition and robust to occlusion.

Stretchable electronic systems have recently been gaining more and more attention because of their potential applications in various implements such as electronic skins and wearable/shape-deformable electronics. An essential factor of the stable stretchable device implementation is that all the elements constituting the system must have sufficient elasticity and exhibit stable performances even under repetitive stretching conditions. In this paper, we review the latest research results to secure the stable stretchability of electrodes among the various components of the system.
The inverse problem about the theoretical analysis of a drill string bending in a channel of an inclined bore-hole with localized geometrical imperfections is studied. The system of ordinary differential equations is first derived based on the theory of curvilinear flexible elastic rods. One can then use these equations to investigate the quasi-static effects of the drill string bending that may occur in the process of raising, lowering and rotation of the string inside the bore-hole. The method for numerical solution of the constructed equations is described. With the proposed method, the phenomenon of the drill column movement, its contact interaction with the bore-hole surface, and the frictional seizure can be simulated for different combinations of velocities, directions of rotation and axial motion of the string. Geometrical imperfections in the shape of localized smoothed breaks of the bore-hole axis line are considered. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the method proposed.
Flexible display tends to grow every year, It tends to be larger, slimmer, and higher in image quality. Therefore, accuracy is required in the manufacturing process of each part. In the curved monitor, the bottom chassis has a structure to which other parts can be attached. The accuracy of the curvature which the bottom chassis of the curve monitor monitors has is important. If the curvature error is large, serious defects such as cracks, warpage, twisting and the like occur. Curvature was analyzed using 3D scanner. In the Forming process and Restriking process steps, spring go occurred, and spring back occurred in the Notching process and Bending process steps. Even in the same process, it was confirmed that the curvature value varied depending on the formed shape.

In this paper, a realtime MIDI controller is designed using leap motion. The controller makes virtual MIDI port on Windows that it is connected to the port and protocol for communication with DAW or VST. It is converted MIDI data when it is detected a real time the position and shape of hand. This converted data transfer MIDI port by MIDI CC(Control Change). Therefore this controller has the purpose to support flexible MIDI input function than existed MIDI controller.

A series of compounds that contain varying numbers of the same mesogenic structure, biphenyl p-oxybenzoate unit, attached through a pentamethylene spacer to the central benzene ring were prepared and their liquid crystallinity was studied. The mesophase-forming ability of a dimesogenic compound was found to be greatly dependent on whether or not its geometric shape is linear and also on the existence of the pentamethylene spacer between the mesogen and the central core. The presence of the spacer enhanced the capacity of a compound to form a mesophase. In the trimesogenic compound the mesogens were linked to the 1,3,5-positions of the core benzene ring through the spacer. The compound was found to be enantiotropically nematic.
Herein, we present effective polygonal finite elements to which the strain-smoothed element (SSE) method is applied. Recently, the SSE method has been developed for conventional triangular and quadrilateral finite elements; furthermore, it has been shown to improve the performance of finite elements. Polygonal elements enable various applications through flexible mesh handling; however, further development is still required to use them more effectively in engineering practice. In this study, piecewise linear shape functions are adopted, the SSE method is applied through the triangulation of polygonal elements, and a smoothed strain field is constructed within the element. The strain-smoothed polygonal elements pass basic tests and show improved convergence behaviors in various numerical problems.

Flexible structure uses a material with strong axial stiffness and small bending stiffness as its major structural material so it is very sensitive to initial stiffness. Therefore, the self-formation process which accomplishes a form in the natural world is grasped and it is as well investigated and classified the type of modeling techniques which are available to find the shapes of soft structures. Accordingly, for analysis and design of flexible structure, three-step analysis such as shape analysis, stress-deformation analysis, cutting pattern generation and constructional analysis is required unlike the existing stiff structure. In this study, suggest that minimize the error of side curvatures by the triangle Re-mesh pattern and draw the cutting pattern generation.
Pile-to-pilecap connection performance is important as Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no expansion joints and their flexible weak-axis oriented supporting piles take the role of the expansion joint. This connection may govern the bridge strength and the performance against various lateral loads. The intention of this study is to identify crack propagation patterns when the pile-to-pilecap connection is subjected to lateral loadings and to propose novel connections for improved performance under lateral loadings. In this study, eight different types of connections were developed and modeled, using Abaqus 6.12 to evaluate performances. Three types were developed by strengthening the connections using rebar or steel tube: (i) PennDOT specification; (ii) Spiral rebar; and (iii) HSS tube. Other types were developed by softening the connections using shape modifications: (i) cylindrical hole; (ii) reduced flange; (iii) removed flange; (iv) extended hole; and (v) slot hole connection types. The connections using the PennDOT specification, HSS tube, and cylindrical hole were shown to be ineffective in the prevention of cracks, resulting in lower structural capacities under the lateral load compared to other types. The other developed connections successfully delayed or arrested the concrete crack initiations and propagations. Among the successful connection types, the spiral rebar connection allowed a relatively larger reaction force, which can damage the superstructure of the IABs. Other softened connections performed better in terms of minimized reaction forces and crack prevention.

Cable network system is a flexible lightweight structure which curved cables can transmit only tensile forces. The weight of cable roof dramatically can reduce when the length becomes large. The cable network system is too flexible, most cable systems are stabilized by pretension forces. The tensile force of cable system is greatly influenced by the sag ratio and pretension forces. Determining initial sag ratio of cable roof system is essential in a design process of cable structures. Final sag ratio and pretension depends on initial installed sag and on proper handling during installation. The design shape of cable system has an affect on the sag and pretension, and must be determined using well-defined design philosophy. This paper is carried out the comparative data of the deflection and tensile forces on the geometric non-linear analysis of cable network systems according to sag ratio. The study of cable network system is provided to technical informations for the design of a large span cable roof, analytical results are compared with the results of other researchers. Structural nonlinear analysis of systems having cable elements is relatively complex than other rigid structural systems because displacements are large as a reason of flexibility, initial prestress is applied to cables in order to increase the rigidity, and then divergence of nonlinear analysis occurs rather frequently. Therefore, cable network systems do not exhibit a typical nonlinear behavior, iterative method that can handle geometric nonlinearities are necessary.
