  • Relations between GMS-5 infrared brightness temperature with SSM/I retrieved rain rate are determined by a probability matching method similar to Atlas et al. and Crosson et al. For this study, coincident data sets of the GMS-5 infrared measurements and SSM/I data during two summer seasons of 1997 and 1998 are constructed. The cumulative density functions (CDFs) of infrared brightness temperature and rain rate are matched at pairs of two variables which give the same percentile contribution. The method was applied for estimating rain rate on 31 July 1998, examining heavy rainfall estimation of a flash flood event over Mt. Jiri. Results were compared with surface gauge observations run by Korean Meteorological Administration. It was noted that the method produced reasonably good quality of rain estimate, however, there was large area giving false rain due to the anvil type clouds surrounding deep convective clouds. Extensive validation against surface rain observation is currently under investigation.

  • In a compartment fire, convective heat transfer dominates spread of the fire and smoke movement before flash-over occurs, and natural convection is very important in particular when there are no openings. The finite volume method with SIMPLE algorithm was applied to a square cavity similar to a compartment without an opening. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the method and to simulate natural convection from a hot body in the cavity. The results without the hot body showed an excellent agreement with those of previous studies. Streamlines, isotherms and Nusselt numbers were computed for different Rayleigh numbers.

  • The recent fire incident in an elementary school of Chonan city causes the media focus on the fire safety of residential container buildings. In this study, real fire tests were conducted in this kind of buildings. Fire temperature and radiant heat flux were measured, in order to investigate the hazard-reduction effects during the fire emergency of residential container buildings. According to the test results, flash over occur in 10 minutes, peak fire temperature was $935.5^{\circ}C$, peak radiant heat flux was $24.99kW/m^2$ at 8minutes after residential container building fire.

  • In this study, two years Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data observed near the coast and islands are used to evaluate gust factors only when time averaged wind speed is higher than 5 ms. The gust factors are quite different in spatial and temporal domain according to analysis method. As the averaged time is increased, the gust factors are also increased. But the gust factors are decreased when wind speed is increased. It is because each wind speed is averaged one and a maximum wind is the greatest one for each time interval. The result from t-test is shown that all data are included within the 99% significance level. A sample standard deviation of ten minutes and one minute are 0.137~0.197, 0.067~0.142, respectively. Recently, the gust factor provided at the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Homepage is calculated with one-hour averaged method. All though this method is hard to use directly for forecasting the strong wind over sea and coast, the result will be a great help to express Ocean Storm Flash in the Regional Meteorological Offices and the Meteorological Stations.

  • Heavy Rainfall event accompanying with Mesoscale Convective Systems(MCSs) inducing flash flooding and Muan and Kunsan Airport closing over Jeollabuk-do area was investigated this study. Comparing to previous study(I), this heavy rainfall event was characterized by much abundant moisture from Typhoon, strong conditional convective instability, and cluster type MCSs. It almost impossible to make accurate forecasting of precipitation amounts and life cycle of MCSs unless proper analysis.

  • Though the probability of tunnel fire accident is very low, but critical fatalities are expected when it occurred. In this study the effect of critical safety parameters on tunnel fire accident are examined using probabilistic technique. Fire detection time, smoke spread velocity, passenger escape velocity, flash-over time, and emergency service arrival time are considered. In order to estimate the uncertainties of input parameters Monte Carlo simulation are used, and fatalities for each assumed accident scenarios are obtained as results. For the efficiency of iterative calculation PRA(Probabilistic Risk Analysis) code is developed in this study. As a result fire detection have large effect.

  • This paper designs a virtual USB drive for mobile devices which gives an illusion of a traditional USB flash memory drive and provides capacity-free storage space over IP network. The virtual USB drive operating with a S3C2410 hardware platform and embedded linux consists of USB device driver, an iSCSI-enabled network stack, and a seamless USB/iSCSI tunneling module. For performance enhancement, it additionally provides a kernel-level seamless USB/iSCSI tunneling module and data sharing with symbol references among kernel modules. Experiments reveal that the kernel-level implementation can improve the I/O performance up to 8 percentage, as compared with the user-level implementation.

  • This paper presents the improved bum-in method for the reliability of SRAM in Multi Chip Package (MCP). Semiconductor reliability is commonly improved through the bum-in process. Reliability problem is more significant in MCP that includes over two chips in a package, because the failure of one chip (SRAM) has a large influence on the yield and quality of the other chips - Flash Memory, DRAM, etc. Therefore, the quality of SRAM must be guaranteed. To improve the quality of SRAM, we applied the improved wafer level bum-in process using multi cells selection method in addition to the previously used methods. That method is effective in detecting special failure. Finally, with the composition of some kind of methods, we could achieve the high quality of SRAM in Multi Chip Package.

  • Performance based design(PBD) is the method to make a fire safety design against them after predicting the factors of fire risk in a building. Therefore, predicting fire risk in a building is very important process in PBD. For predicting fire risk of a building, an engineer of PBD must consider various factors such as ignition location, ignition point, ignition source, first ignited item, second ignited item, flash over, the state of door and fire suppression system. But, it is difficult to trust fire safety capacity of the design because the process in Korea' PBD is unprofessional and unreasonable. This paper had surveyed some cases of PBD that had been made in Korea to find the problems of the process to predict fire risk. And it have proposed the improvements of process to predict fire risk of a building.
