The fuel in conventional liquid fuel combustor is atomized by spray method for high efficiency and low emissions. To improve the overall fuel efficiency and lower pollutant emissions in liquid fuel combustion systems, the effective spatial and temporal separation of droplet evaporation from normal spray process is needed. In this paper, the recuperation of high temperature burnt gas for fuel evaporation was proposed to develop a cylindrical premixed combustor. The recuperation process using U shaped tube is effective to evaporate the liquid fuel. The results show that the flame mode is changed into red radiation flame, blue flame and lift off flame with decreasing equivalence ratio as gas fuel combustion mode. In particular, the blue flame is found to be very stable at heating load 9.2 kW and equivalence ratio 0.731. NOx was measured blow 105 ppm ($O_2$ zero base) from equivalence ratio 0.705 to 0.835. CO which is a very important emission index in liquid fuel combustor was observed below 5 ppm ($O_2$ zero base) under the same equivalence region.
Lean laminar premixed propane and methane flames which were anchored by a hydrogen-pilot flame in a tube were investigated experimentally. The flame shapes were observed by varying mean velocity from 10cm/s to 140cm/s and equivalence ratio from 0.45 to 0.8. In this study, behaviors of flames are divided into five regions such as tail-out, flash-back, flickering, stable and vibrating flames with respect to the mean velocity and the equivalence ratio. Although the flames are unstable in both the flickering and the vibrating region, they have different characteristics such as the frequency, sound generation and creation process of flame curvature. The flickering region exists near the flammability limit and the flame flickers in a frequency of about 10Hz. When flame front is bended, the propane flame front is straightened and the methane flame front is bended more by thermo-diffusive instability. In the vibrating region, the flame vibrates emitting audible sound in a frequency of about 100Hz. In the boundary of vibrating region, the vibration of flame changes between two modes such as single frequency vibration and dual frequency vibration. Increase and decrease of vibration in each mode are determined by thermo-acoustic instability.
The combustion instability acts as a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbine and even causes the fatal damage to the combustor and whole system. In this experiment, the pressure fluctuation is highly related to the stabilizing position of flame and fuel injection location. The fuel injection location is connected with the convection time of the fresh mixture, which is important time scale to refresh the mixtures near the flame stabilization location. The flame is extremely unstable when the alternative stabilization occurs and bulk mode frequency (${\sim}10Hz$) of pressure fluctuation is observed in this condition. It was found that the convection time scale of the fresh reactant coincided with the time scale of the bulk mode fluctuation. Hence this phenomenon results from the local equivalence ratio change caused by the pressure fluctuation induced by thermo-acoustic effects.
A novel nitrogen-phosphorus compound, diphenyl piperazine-1,4-diylbis(methylphosphinate)(DPPMP) was synthesized via a two step reaction and its flame retarding efficiency as a single component additive was investigated. The success of synthesis was confirmed by FTIR and $^1H$ and $^{31}P$ NMR analysis. The product was mixed with polycarbonate (PC), poly(butylene terephtalate) (PBT), ethylene-vinyl-acetate copolymer (EVA), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). The flame-retarding efficiency was evaluated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the UL-94 vertical test methods. The addition of DPPMP enhanced the flame retardancy of the polymers and the V-0 ratings were obtained for the polymers examined in this study at a loading of 7-30 wt%. The gas-phase flame retardancy mode of action was suggested for this material from the thermogrametry experiment results.

A cup burner experiment was performed to investigate the effect of the oxidizer velocity and concentration on flame instability near extinction. Heptane was used as a fuel and air diluted by nitrogen and carbon dioxide was used in the oxidizer stream. Two types of flame instabilities at the flame base and at axial downstream were observed near extinction. The instability at the flame base could be characterized by cell, swing, and rotation modes, and the cell mode changed to the rotation mode through the swing mode as the oxidizer velocity increased. To assess the parameters for the flame instability, the initial mixture strengths, Lewis number, and adiabatic flame temperature were investigated under each condition. The Lewis number might be the most important among them, but it is impossible to generalize because of the insufficient number of cases. Furthermore, the axial periodic flickering motion disappeared at low and high oxidizer velocities near extinction. This resulted from the fact that low oxidizer velocity induced evaporated fuel velocity below the critical velocity and high velocity made the reacting fuel velocity comparable.
The objective of this study is to examine the onset condition and the frequency characteristics of the low-frequency combustion oscillation in a surface burner. For this purpose, extensive parametric studies have been performed experimentally and the effects of size of each section, the equivalence ratio, and the entrance velocity on oscillatory behavior explored. The experimental results were discussed in comparison with the other combustors associated tilth the low-frequency combustion oscillation. The combustion mode is driven at high combustion rate by the lift of unstable flame near the lower limit of the combustible equivalence ratio. The oscillation frequency is dependent not on the burner geometry but on the equivalence ratio and the combustion load. Low-frequency combustion mode was formed to be divided into two different modes, named C1 and C2 respectively. Two modes occurred individually, simultaneously or transitionally according to the equivalence ratio and combustion load. The characteristics of low-frequency oscillation is different from each other depending on the type of combustors. The surface burner has also its own characteristics of low -frequency oscillation.

Thermal expanded core (TEC) fiber can reduce, being advantaged from thermal diffusion technology, connection loss by expanding the tolerance in relation to axial offset and gap when making optical connection having mode field diameter (MFD) of optical fiber expanded locally. In this paper, TEC fiber fabrication system based on the frame brushing techniques using twin-torch tip was designed and developed in order to maintain a stable thermal diffusion and single-mode when manufacturing TEC fiber. We were able to obtain that varied kinds of TEC fibers of which MFD could have been extended between $20\;{\mu}m$ and $40\;{\mu}m$ by TEC fiber fabrication system. In addition, the characteristic of connection loss was measured by alignment two TEC fibers of which MFD was $30\;{\mu}m$.

Premixed burner is a very strong candidate in household condensing gas boiler burner system because it has low CO and NOx emission with high thermal efficiency. The objective of this study was to determine combustion characteristics of cylindrical premixed burner using different baffle plate and flame holes. Results showed that cylindrical premixed flame mode could be changed into lift-off flame, blue flame, red flame, and green flame with increasing equivalence ratio. In particular, blue flame was found to be very stable at heating load of 8,82~35,280 kcal/h. NOx emission was under 26 ppm between 0.775 to 0.813 of equivalence ratio. CO emission was under 58 ppm under the same equivalence ratio. Thermal efficiency, a very important index in condensing gas boiler, was found to be above 90.13% under the same equivalence region.

Experimental investigations on flame spread in droplet arrays have been conducted under supercritical ambient pressures of fuel droplet. Flame spread rates are measured for n-Decane droplet of diameters of 0.75 and 1.0mm, using high speed images of OH chemiluminescence up to 3.0MPa. The pattern of flame spread is categorized into two: a continuous mode and an intermittent one. There exists a limit droplet spacing, above which flame spread does not occur. Flame spread rate with the decrease of droplet spacing increases and then decreases after takin& a maximum. It is also seen that there exists a limit ambient pressure, above which flame spread does not occur. Flame spread rate decreases monotonically with the increase of ambient pressure. Exceptionally, In the case of a small droplet spacing, flame spread with the increase of ambient pressure is extended to supercritical pressures of fuel droplet. This is caused by enhanced vaporization with the increase of ambient pressure. Consequently, in flame spread with droplet droplet spacing, the relative position of flame to droplet spacing plays an important role. The monotonic decrease with ambient pressure is mainly related to the reduction of flame radius in subcritical pressures and the extension to supercritical pressures of flame spread is caused by the reduction of ignition time of unburnt droplet due to the enhanced vaporization at supercritical pressures.
