  • In this study, the height of the flame required to estimate the heat flow path and flame spread in pool fire has been applied by the empirical formula, but it is calculated without applying the pressure and temperature parameters of the fire room. Until now, the height of the flame applied to pool fire was $l_F=0.235Q^{2/5}-1.02D$ in the Heskestad empirical formula, but accurate temperature calculation was not possible due to the temperature and pressure which are not influenced by the flame height. Therefore, applying the temperature and pressure around it can calculate the exact flame height, which can be applied to fire investigation and fire dynamics. The structure of the flame is divided into a continuous flame, an intermittent flame, and a buoyancy flame, but it is assumed that the flame height is calculated from the visual aspect to the intermittent flame region, and the temperature of the buoyancy flame is very low. The effect of heat of vaporization on the height of flame was investigated. The results showed that flame height was different according to the pressure and temperature around the fire room.

  • We have presented characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. The experimental apparatus consisted of a slot burner and a contraction nozzle for a lifted flame. As concentration difference of the both side of slot burner increases, the shape of flame changed from a premixed flame to a triple flame, and the liftoff height decreased to the minimum value and then increased again. Around this minimum point, it is confirmed a transition regime from premixed flame to triple flame. Consequently, the experimental results of the liftoff height, flame curvature, and luminescence intensity showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame.

  • An experimental study has been conducted at an intermediate scale to study the effect of a cross flow on a purely buoyant fire. Video taping of the flame and post processing of the images by means of a novel technique provide a contour of a mean flame for all cases studied. This flame contour allows the determination of a mean flame length and a mean flame height. The mean flame length and height are recorded as functions of the forced flow velocity. Three dimensional flow patterns are formed in the flame trailing edge affecting both the mean flame length and height. The three dimensional patterns are studied systematically as functions of the cross flow velocity to quantify the effect of confinement on the flame geometry.

  • Flame height calculation in a forest fire is a crucial part of predicting horizontal or vertical flame spread flared by radiation heat transfer. Flame height, which is one of the flame characteristics, can be estimated by the average height of luminous flame. This research relied on flame height observation test on P. densiflora surface fuel bed, which are surface combustibles in a forest, and calorimeter to measure Heat Release Rate, thus produced $H_f=0.027(\dot{Q'})^{2/3}$, flame height calculation equation for surface fuel. The research did not take into consideration such conditions as external velocity, slope and other variables that could affect flame height. According to comparison among experiment results, calculation results of the above formula and those of existing Heskestad formula (1998), it was found that standard error in fallen pine needles between experimental results and calculation results of the above formula amounts to 0.08, whereas standard error in same plant between experimental results and calculation results of existing Heskestad formula amounts to 0.23.

  • The present study has been conducted to estimate the chemical flame height based on fuel consumption in fire field model. The calculation algorithms based on cumulative fraction of HRRPUL and fuel concentration along the z axis were applied to the results predicted by Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) version 6.3.2 and the mean chemical flame height was obtained by time averaging of instantaneous flame height with the algorithms. The mean flame height calculated by fuel concentration was quite well matched with that of cumulative value of HRRPUL within 10% over-prediction. This study contribute to a more detailed understanding of fire behavior and quantitative evaluation of flame height in the computational fire model.

  • This study is intended to understand flame behavior of the pool fire by height of fire source. Liquid fuels were methanol and n-Heptane which are used in many studies of pool fire. Size of vessel was $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}50mm$ and the vessel was made by stainless steel. Combustion time, mass loss rate, flame temperature, flame height and air entrainment rate from the outside to flame were measured, and flame behavior was visualized with video camera. Based on the experiment, it was found that combustion characteristics of pool fire was decreased according to increase of height of fire source because entrainment volume of relative cold air was increased from the outside to flame.

  • When the fuel jet velocity is smaller than coflow velocity, the trend of decreasing liftoff height of highly diluted propane lifted flame with coflow velocity is observed experimentally. To investigate the mechanism of decreasing liftoff height with coflow velocity, lifted flames in propane jet has been studied numerically. Using one-step overall reaction mechanism the liftoff heights have been calculated for four cases of coflow velocity. The simulation agrees qualitatively with experimental observation that the liftoff height decreases with coflow velocity. As coflow velocity increases, the streamlines between nozzle and lifted flame diverge in radial direction due to the difference of momentum between coflow jet and fuel jet such that the local flow velocity ahead of lifted flame base decreases resulting in decrease of the liftoff height with coflow velocity.

  • 4-panel of 1m height and 45cm width were fixed on the $40cm{\times}40cm$ bottom plate and the opening of the panel comer was 5cm. Diameter of stainless vessel is loom and its height is 2cm and it located at the center of the bottom plate. 78mL liquid fuel was filled in the vessel and its depth was 1cm. Flame temperature was measured with K type thermocouple, and radiation heat of flame was measured with heat flux meter. Flame height and its behavior was visualized with video camera. and mass burning rate was measured by fuel combustion time. According to the development of fire, flame swirling was begin. From the experiment the mass burning rate was larger and the height of flame was higher than the usual pool fire flame. Flame temperature and heat flux also increased far more than the pool fire. Consequently the swirling air flow through the openings between the panel and thermal buoyance contribute to increase of heat release rate, flame length and mass burning rate.

  • In order to investigate the smoke movement in three dimensional room fires, the center fire, wall fire and corner fire plume in different sized fires were studied experimentally by rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. As the fire size became larger for the center fires placed at the center of the floor, the air flow rate entrained through the opening, average hot layer temperature, flame angle deflected backwards and mean flame height was observed to increase. On the other hand, as the fire size became smaller, the neutral plane height in the door and time reached steady-state was observed to decrease. The average hot layer temperature, mean flame height and doorway neutral plane height obtained from comer fire were higher than those produced by wall fires and center fires. The simple model for describing the effect of walls on the mean flame height was presented. It was shown that the model provides a good description of the present measurements, when used with the assumption by Hansell(1993), that the increase of the average flame height is equal to the ratio of the open to the total perimeters of the trays. Also the two models for predicting the effects of walls on the mean flame height were presented. These models overestimated the measured values of the mean flame height above fuel trays close to a wall and in a corner by approximately 19-26%, respectively.

In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, ${\Phi}$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction ${\Phi}$ was constant in premixed flame. In critical flame small gradient appears over the whole regime. In triple flame, typical diffusion flame shape is obtained as parabolic distribution type due to diffusion flame trailing.
