We propose a turbulence-tolerant Manchester on-off keying (M-OOK) transmission for free-space optical (FSO) communication. At the transmitter end, a M-OOK signal featuring a spectrum with low-frequency components absent is modulated and transmitted into a turbulent channel. At the receiver end, a low-pass filter (LPF) -based adaptive-threshold decision (ATD) with LPF-extracted channel-state information (CSI) and a high-pass filter (HPF)-based fixed-threshold decision (FTD) are employed to compensate for the effects of turbulence, owing to the low-frequency spectral characteristics of the turbulent channel. The performance of LPF-based ATD and HPF-based FTD are evaluated for various cutoff frequencies for the LPF and HPF. Besides, the proposed M-OOK transmission is compared to conventional non-return-to-zero OOK (NRZ-OOK) for different data rates. The proposed technique is verified in simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed M-OOK detection with optimized cutoff frequencies of LPF and HPF has better bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared to NRZ-OOK, and it is close to the theoretical ATD with the knowledge of precise CSI under various degrees of turbulence effects.
This paper proposes single logarithmic amplification (single-LA) and deep learning (DL)-based fixed-threshold on-off keying (OOK) detection for free-space optical (FSO) communication. Multilevel LAs (MLAs) can be used to mitigate intensity fluctuations in the received OOK signal by their nonlinear gain characteristics; however, it is ineffective in the case of high scintillation, owing to degradation of the OOK signal's extinction ratio. Therefore, a DL technique is applied to realize effective scintillation compensation in single-LA applications. Fully connected (FC) networks and fully connected neural networks (FCNN), which have nonlinear modeling characteristics, are deployed in this work. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulations under various scintillation effects. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional adaptive-threshold-decision, single-LA-based, MLA-based, FC-based, and FCNN-based OOK detection techniques.

In this paper, an algorithm to extract bar-space area is suggested. In a section of bar-code space area the threshold value is computed, and bar and space are extracted according to threshold value. PDF417 is used everyday life and printed in many different materials. The printed PDF417 is especially influenced by various light source. The decision of bar and space is very hard under the change of illumination. The fixed threshold value to distinguish the bar and space can not be applied. in these cases, The proposed algorithm is developed to investigate variable threshold. The variable threshold can be obtained by simple calculation.

Double-diffused metal oxide power semiconductor field effect transistors are used extensively in recent years in various circuit applications. The temperature variation of the drain current at a fixed bias shows both positive and negative resistance characteristics depending on the gate threshold voltage and gate-to source bias votage. In this paper, the decision method of the gate crossover voltage by the temperature variation and a new method to determine the gate threshold voltage graphecally are presented.

This paper presents a fire detection algorithm with a minimal false detection rate, intended for a thermal imaging surveillance environment, whose properties vary depending on temporal conditions of day or night and environmental changes. This algorithm was designed to minimize the false detection alarm rate while ensuring a high detection rate, as required in fire detection applications. It was necessary to reduce false fire detections due to non-flame elements occurring when existing fixed threshold-based fire detection methods were applied. To this end, adaptive flame thresholds that varied depending on the characteristics of input images, as well as the center of gravity of the heat-source and hot-source regions, were analyzed in an attempt to minimize such non-flame elements in the phase of selecting flame candidate blocks. Also, to remove any false detection elements caused by camera shaking, one of the most frequently raised issues at outdoor sites, preliminary decision thresholds were adaptively set to the motion pixel ratio of input images to maximize the accuracy of the preliminary decision. Finally, in addition to the preliminary decision results, the texture correlation and intensity of the flame candidate blocks were averaged for a specific period of time and tested for their conformity with the fire decision conditions before making the final decision. To verify the fire detection performance of the proposed algorithm, a total of ten test videos were subjected to computer simulation. As a result, the fire detection accuracy of the proposed algorithm was determined to be 94.24%, with minimum false detection, demonstrating its improved performance and practicality compared to previous fixed threshold-based algorithms.

In a distributed computer system with star topology, the processing power of central node may be greater than that of peripheral nodes and the job arrival rate of each node may be different. The performance of load balancing may be very different according to the selection of sender criteria and receiver criteria for job transfer. But the optimal decision of sender and receiver criteria is very difficult in heterogeneous distributed computer systems. In this paper we propose effective destination decision policies using dynamic criteria such as mean job response time of a node and estimated response time of a job, instead of fixed threshold for dynamic load balancing.

This paper is concerned with the performance analysis of a modified stop-and-go generalized multi-modulus algorithm (MSAG-GMMA) adaptive blind equalization algorithm with variable step size. The proposed algorithm multiplies the fixed step size by the error signal of the decision-oriented algorithm in the equalization coefficient update equation, and changes the step size according to the error size. Also, the MSAG-GMMA having a fixed step size is operated so as to maintain a fast convergence speed from a certain threshold to a steady state by determining the error signal size of the decision-directed algorithm, and when the MSAG-GMMA to work To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we use the ensemble ISI, ensemble-averaged MSE, and equalized constellation obtained from the output of the equalizer as the performance index. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has faster convergence speeds than MMA, GMMA, and MSAG-GMMA and has a small residual error in steady state.

This paper proposes a novel video coding system with rate control based on fractal algorithm To overcome the demerits of excessive amounts of coded bit generated by previous fractal coding methodology. the proposed system classifies the Image into three classes such as background, motion compensation, and fractal coding area. The motion vector for motion compensation, and the fractal offset value that is difference value between the predicted offset and the least-square approximated value are coded with variable length code The decision method which determines threshold value of partitioning quadtree is applied to the bit-rate control algorithm considering the quantity of currently generated bits and fixed channel bandwidth Experimental result shows that the proposed system enhances compression ratio 1.8 times higher than previous method for the same image quality, and performs efficient rate control for fixed channel bandwidth.

We analyze the transmission performance of WDM system based on cascaded optical add/drop multiplexers. The considered factors degrading the performance in this paper include the intra-channel corosstalk caused from space switches and demultiplexers/multiplexers, the amplified spontaneous emission noise, and the extinction ratio. To ensure the power penalty within 1dB, the extinction ration more than 13dB, the switch corosstalk less than 39dB, and the demultiplexer/multiplexer crosstalk less than 20dB are required. Under the assumption of switch corosstalk less than 30dB, performance degradation due to the ASE noise is dominant compared to the crosstalk. With the fixed decision threshold in an optical receiver, the maximum number of cascaded nodes reduces to a half compared to the case of the optimum decision threshold.

Contrary to the previous methods, in this paper, we propose an enhanced shot change detection method using multiple features and binary decision tree. The previous methods usually used single feature and fixed threshold between consecutive frames. However, contents such as color, shape, background, and texture change simultaneously at shot change points in a video sequence. Therefore, in this paper, we detect the shot changes effectively using multiple features, which are supplementary each other, rather than using single feature. In order to classify the shot changes, we use binary classification tree. According to this classification result, we extract important features among the multiple features and obtain threshold value for each feature. We also perform the cross-validation and droop-case to verify the performance of our method. From an experimental result, it was revealed that the EI of our method performed average of 2% better than that of the conventional shot change detection methods.
