  • For mobile robot, the navigation effectiveness can be improved by providing autonomy, but this autonomy requires the mobile robot to detect unknown obstacles and avoid collisions while moving it toward the target. This paper presents an effective method for autonomous navigation of the mobile robot in structured environments. This method uses ultrasonic sensor array to detect obstacles and utilizes force relationship between the obstacles and the target for avoiding collisions. Accuracy of sensory data produced by ultrasonic sensors is improved by employing error eliminating rapid ultrasonic firing (EERUF) technique. Navigation algorithm controlling both the velocity and steering simultaneously is developed, implemented to the mobile robot and tested on the floor filled with the cluttered obstacles. It is verified that from the results of the field tests the mobile robot can move at a maximum speed of 0.66 m/sec without any collisions.

  • The intake noise of an automobile induced by firing of an engine accompanies acoustic resonances of ducts of an intake system. Conventionally, the adoption of the Helmholtz type resonator was one of possible ways to eliminate the booming noise due to acoustic resonances of air ducts. Although the Helmholtz type resonator is convenient to attenuate the intake noise of an automobile, the usage of the Helmholtz type resonator requires cost increase or big engine room space. Therefore, reduction of the number of the resonators or the volume of the resonators is essential to increase the value of an automobile. To meet these requirements, other types of resonator are suggested instead of the Helmholtz type resonator. The effectiveness of the suggested resonators is compared considering noise reduction ability, effect to the engine performance and size of each resonator.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method which can detect ordnance firing events in IR images. The proposed algorithm is comprised of effective target detection and robust clutter rejection methods based on the temporalspatial cooperative filter. And additional clutter reduction is performed based on the proposed two features, NTFF (Number of Temporal Filter Frames) and SNS(Size-Normalized Signal). Experimental results show the effectiveness and feasibilities of our proposed algorithm.

  • This report examines several models, such as random or area bombardment, salvo fire and pattern fire, for the computation of target coverage when multiple rounds are fired at a target. Fractional kill of a fragment sensitive target by a fragmenting projectile as a function of the number of rounds fired is compared for two salvo fire models. The first is a standard salvo fire model in which N rounds are fired at the same aim point, in the second model single kill probability is computed for a fragment sensitive target and then fractional kill from the firing of N rounds is computed according to the assumption that the effects of each round are independent. Because the method of solution becomes very laborious for large patterns, this report gives a method only for the case of evaluating the effectiveness of stick and trianglar pattern fire. The need for the sophisticated and complicated target coverage models is demonstrated by the results of computations performed in this report.

  • This paper is the result of constructing information processing system such as living creatures' brain based on artificial life techniques. The living things are best information processing system in themselves. One individual is developed from a generative cell. And a species of this individual has adapted itself to the environment through evolution. In this paper, we propose a new method of designing neural networks using biological inspired developmental and evolutionary concept. Ontogeny of organism is embodied in cellular automata(CA) and phylogeny of species is realized by evolutionary algorithms(EAs). We call 'Evolving Cellular Automata Neural Systems' as ECANSI. The connection among cells is determined by the rule of cellular automata. In order to obtain the best neural networks in given environment, we evolve the arragemetn of initial cells. The cell, that is a neuron of neural networks, is modeled on chaotic neuron with firing or rest state like biological neuron. A final output of network is measured by frequency of firing state. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by applying it to Exclusive-OR and parity problem.

  • In this paper, we present the process of developing an automatic carrying and arming system for testing ammunition. When carrying out shooting tests at a domestic rifle range, most of the ammunition operations are carried out by human manpower The series of test processes, such as transporting, arming and firing of heavy munitions, is repeated by employing human. If the ammunition is loaded via manpower, then problems can occur such as loss of reliability of test results, musculoskeletal disorders of humans and also safety accidents can occur. To address these problems, an automated system was developed for the transport and operation of ammunition. This paper covers the design, manufacture and operation of the developed system. In addition, this study validated the effectiveness of the system as compared to the human operation. Our results show that the developed system can be easily adapted to testing ammunition at a domestic rifle range.

  • This paper presents a Petri Net (PN) based disassembly sequence planning model with precedence operations. All feasible disassembly sequences are generated by a disassembly tree and a disassembly sequence is determined using the disassembly precedence and disassembly value matrix, The precedence of disassembly operations is determined through a disassembly tree and the value of disassembly is induced by economic analysis in the end-of-life phase. To solve the disassembly sequence planning model with precedence operations, a heuristic algorithm based on PNs is developed. The developed algorithm generates and searches a partial reachability graph to arrive at an optimal or near-optimal disassembly sequence based on the firing sequence of transitions of the PN model. A refrigerator is shown as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model.

  • A stabilization/solidification (S/S) process for lead (Pb) contaminated soils was evaluated using waste cow bone containing apatite like compounds. Soil samples obtained form firing range were treated with waste cow bone. The effectiveness of stabilization was evaluated based on the Korean Standard Leaching Test (KSLT) and soil pH. The leached concentration reduced with increased in dose of waste cow bone. Overall, the KSLT results showed that Pb concentration in soils are significantly affected by amount of waste cow bone. When soil amended with 20 % of waste cow bone, less than 0.1 mg/kg was leached, and soil pH was increased from 6.5 to 8.4. Same results were obtained when finer waste cow bone was applied. The reachable concentration of Pb in soil showed in inversely proportional to solid/liquid ratio. Aging periods indicate improving mix design was applied. Relatively high lead concentrations was observed at the first 1 days, however leaching profile are reduced significantly over time for all mix designs.

  • An effective method for produce munitions effectiveness data is to calculate weapon effectiveness indices in the US military's Joint Munitions Effectiveness Manuals (JMEM) and take advantage of the damage evaluation model (GFSM) and weapon Effectiveness Evaluation Model (Matrix Evaluator). However, a study about the Range Safety that can be applied in the live firing exercises is very insufficient in the case of ROK military. The Range Safety program is an element of the US Army Safety Program, and is the program responsible for developing policies and guidance to ensure the safe operation of live-fire ranges. The methodology of Weapon Danger Zone (WDZ) program is based on a combination of weapon modeling/simulation data and actual impact data. Also, each WDZ incorporates a probability distribution function which provides the information necessary to perform a quantitative risk assessment to evaluate the relative risk of an identified profile. A study of method to establish for K-Range Safety data is to develop manuals (pamphlet) will be a standard to ensure the effective and safe fire training at the ROK military education and training and environmental conditions. For example, WDZs are generated with the WDZ tool as part of the RMTK (Range Managers Tool Kit) package. The WDZ tool is a Geographic Information System-based application that is available to operational planners and range safety manager of Army and Marine Corps in both desktop and web-based versions. K-Range Safety Program based on US data is reflected in the Korean terrain by operating environments and training doctrine etc, and the range safety data are made. Thus, verification process on modified variables data is required. K-Range Safety rather than being produced by a single program, is an package safety activities and measures through weapon danger zone tool, SRP (The Sustainable Range Program), manuals, doctrine, terrain, climate, military defence M&S, weapon system development/operational test evaluation and analysis to continuously improving range safety zone. Distribution of this K-range safety pamphlet is available to Army users in electronic media only and is intended for the standing army and army reserve. Also publication and distribution to authorized users for marine corps commands are indicated in the table of allowances for publications. Therefore, this study proposes an efficient K-Range Safety Manual producing to calculate the danger zones that can be applied to the ROK military's live fire training by introducing of US Army weapons danger zone program and Range Safety Manual

  • The purpose of Electronic warfare is to disturbe, neutralize, attack, and destroy the opponent's electronic warfare weapon system or equipment. Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD) mission is aimed at incapacitating, destroying, or temporarily deteriorating air defense networks such as enemy surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), which is a representative mission supported by electronic warfare. This paper develops a simulator for analyzing the effectiveness of SEAD missions under electronic warfare support using C++ language based on the DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specification) model, the usefulness of which has been proved through case analysis with examples. The SEAD mission of the friendly forces is carried out in parallel with SSJ (Self Screening Jamming) electronic warfare under the support of SOJ (Stand Off Jamming) electronic warfare. The mission is assumed to be done after penetrating into the enemy area and firing HARM (High Speed Anti Radiation Missile). SAM response is assumed to comply mission under the degraded performance due to the electronic interference of the friendly SSJ and SOJ. The developed simulator allows various combinations of electronic warfare equipment specifications (parameters) and operational tactics (parameters or algorithms) to be input for the purpose of analysis of the effect of these combinations on the mission effectiveness.
