This paper proposes a multi-objective optimal placement method of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in large electric transmission systems. It is proposed for minimizing the number of PMUs for complete system observability and maximizing measurement redundancy of the buses, simultaneously. The measurement redundancy of the bus indicates that number of times a bus is able to monitor more than once by PMUs set. A high level of measurement redundancy can maximize the system observability and it is required for a reliable power system state estimation. Therefore, simultaneous optimizations of the two conflicting objectives are performed using a binary coded firefly algorithm. The complete observability of the power system is first prepared and then, single line loss contingency condition is added to the main model. The practical measurement limitation of PMUs is also considered. The efficiency of the proposed method is validated on IEEE 14, 30, 57 and 118 bus test systems and a real and large- scale Polish 2383 bus system. The valuable approach of firefly algorithm is demonstrated in finding the optimal number of PMUs and their locations by comparing its performance with earlier works.

We describe here the complete nucleotide sequence and the exon-intron structure of the luciferase gene of the firefly, Lampyris noctiluca. The luciferase gene of the L. noctiluca firefly consisted of six introns and seven exons coding for 547 amino acid residues. From the translational start site to the end of last exon, the genomic DNA length of the L. noctiluca luciferase gene spans 1,976 bp.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of set of sensor nodes. These sensor nodes are deployed in unattended area which are able to sense, process and transmit data to the base station (BS). One of the primary issues of WSN is energy efficiency. In many existing clustering approaches, initial centroids of cluster heads (CHs) are chosen randomly and they form unbalanced clusters, results more energy consumption. In this paper, an energy efficient clustering protocol to prevent unbalanced clusters based on firefly and midpoint algorithms called EEC-FM has been proposed, where midpoint algorithm is used for initial centroid of CHs selection and firefly is used for cluster formation. Using residual energy and Euclidean distance as the parameters for appropriate cluster formation of the proposed approach produces balanced clusters to eventually balance the load of CHs and improve the network lifetime. Simulation result shows that the proposed method outperforms LEACH-B, BPK-means, Park's approach, Mk-means, and EECPK-means with respect to balancing of clusters, energy efficiency and network lifetime parameters. Simulation result also demonstrate that the proposed approach, EEC-FM protocol is 45% better than LEACH-B, 17.8% better than BPK-means protocol, 12.5% better than Park's approach, 9.1% better than Mk-means, and 5.8% better than EECPK-means protocol with respect to the parameter half energy consumption (HEC).
Active distribution system (ADS) considering distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicle (EV) is an effective way to cut carbon emission and improve system benefits. ADS is an evolving, complex and uncertain system, thus comprehensive model and effective optimization algorithms are needed. Battery swapping station (BSS) for EV service is an essential type of flexible load (FL). This paper establishes ADS planning model considering BSS firstly for the minimization of total cost including feeder investment, operation and maintenance, net loss and carbon tax. Meanwhile, immune binary firefly algorithm (IBFA) is proposed to optimize ADS planning. Firefly algorithm (FA) is a novel intelligent algorithm with simple structure and good convergence. By involving biological immune system into FA, IBFA adjusts antibody population scale to increase diversity and global search capability. To validate proposed algorithm, IBFA is compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm on IEEE 39-bus system. The results prove that IBFA performs better than PSO in global search and convergence in ADS planning.
This study makes an attempt to appraise how much successful both (Ham-Pyung) Butterfly Festival and (Mu-Ju) Firefly Festival are in the view point of ecology-friendly effects, and based on this appraisal, searches for desirable and developmental directions of other eco-festivals. The empirical analysis of the study shows that even if the Butterfly Festival turns out to be more famous than the Firefly Festival, the latter is confirmed to be more eco-friendly than the former. The fact that the latter is more eco-friendly seems to be due to the fact that the subject matter, that is the theme, of the festival is the fireflies which are not only natural monuments but also peculiar in-site-resources specific to Mu-Ju. This fact suggests that the other eco-festivals, newly emerging ones in particular, need to find and designate in-site-resources inherent in their regions as the theme, as far as possible.

We describe here the cDNA sequence and mRNA expression of a novel family of the antioxidant protein, peroxiredoxin, from the firefly, Pyracoetia ruin. The 555 bp cDNA sequence codes for a 185 amino acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of approximately 21 kDa. The deduced protein of P. rufa peroxiredoxin gene contains two conserved cysteine residues. Alignment of the deduced protein of P. rufa peroxiredoxin gene showed 71.1% protein sequenceidentity to known insect Drosophila melanogaster peroxiredoxin. Northern blot analysis revealed that the P. rufa peroxiredoxin is specifically expressed in the fat body of P. rufa larvae.

We describe here the cDNA sequence and mRNA expression of a novel serine pretense from the firefly, Pyrocoelia rufa. The 771 bp cDNA encodes for 257 amino acid residues. The deduced protein of P. rufa serine pretense gene contains the catalytic triad and six-conserved cysteine residues. Alignment of the deduced protein of P. rufa serine pretense gene showed 47.4% protein sequence identity to known coleopteran insect Rhyzopertha dominica midgut trpsin-like enzyme. Northern blot analysis revealed that the P. rufa serine pretense is specifically expressed in the midgut of P. rufa larvae.

In Korean Peninsula including neighboring islands and Japanese Islands identical firefly species or the species belonging to same genera occur together in both territories. These geographic firefly species, nonetheless, have never been subject to taxonomic consideration together until recently, lacking clear species status and phylogenetic relationships. A recent serial study of these fireflies using luciferase gene and/or portions of mitochondrial DNA sequences provided some insight into these populations in terms of validity of species name, phylogenetic relationships, and speciation event. In this article, thus, we have reviewed the recent progress on phylogenetic and/or population genetic aspects of these species, i.e., Hotaria-group fireflies, Luciola lateralis, and Pyrocoelia rufa to better understand the firefly species in these regions.

A cDNA encoding the luciferase of firefly Luciola lateralis was cloned downstream from the polyhedrin gene promoter of Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus and expressed in B. mori cells (BmN-4). The coding soquence for luciferase was inserted into pBmKSK2 rectors) which was reconstructed from the polyhedrin-based transfer vector pBmKSKl by modifying cloning sites. Recombinant virus, BmK2-LUCDF, containing the luciferase gene was selected and purified in BmN-4 cells. The emission of luminescence by luciferase was only detected in BmK2-LUCDF-infected cell extracts. This result indicates that the cloned new luciferase gene of firefly L. lateralis can be expressed efficiently in baculovirus expression system and used as a useful reporter gene.
This study was conducted at rearing room to investigate the feeding behavior of fruits in the firefly (Pylocoelia rufa) larvae and the ovipositional characteristics of the adults. As a result, the pear, apple, melon, persimmon, mandarin, grape and peach were shown the feeding behavior of larvae the average 6.40, 3.25, 2.50, 2.20, 2.00, 1.40 and 1.25, respectively. However, the larvae were not shown at all feeding behavior to banana. The hours feeding behavior of firefly larvae was primarily from 8:00 pm until 2:00 am. In addition, the time at which the voracious feeding behavior was until 8:00 pm to 12:00 pm. The 6:00 pm began whisking all the larvae are hiding in the shelter. In the case of the firefly larvae fed only the edible snail, the adults were oviposition an average $49{\pm}6$ eggs. At that time larva stage, adults of the firefly eating the pears, apples, melon and eat edible snail at the same time there were oviposition the $53{\pm}7$ on average. In the case of fruits, the pears, apples, and melons has been considered worthy to take the firefly larva fed with the current land snails.
