  • The MODIS Land Rapid Response System (RRS) has been developed to provide rapid access to MODIS data globally, with initial emphasis on 250 m color composite imagery and active fire data. Fire detection is based on a contextual algorithm that exploits the strong emission of mid-infrared radiation from fires. This algorithm examines each pixel of the MODIS swath, and ultimately assigns to each one of the following classes: missing data, cloud, water, non-fire, fire, or unknown. In this paper, we introduce the MODIS Rapid Response System established at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and present some application results for Korea using the direct broadcast data acquired at KARI ground station.

  • Accurate forest fires detection algorithms remain a challenging issue, because, some of the objects have the same features with fire, which may result in high false alarms rate. This paper presents a new video-based, image processing forest fires detection method, which consists of four stages. First, a background-subtraction algorithm is applied to detect moving regions. Secondly, candidate fire regions are determined using CIE $L{\ast}a{\ast}b{\ast}$ color space. Thirdly, special wavelet analysis is used to differentiate between actual fire and fire-like objects, because candidate regions may contain moving fire-like objects. Finally, support vector machine is used to classify the region of interest to either real fire or non-fire. The final experimental results verify that the proposed method effectively identifies the forest fires.

  • We performed a validation study of the MODIS active fire detection algorithm using high resolution SPOT image as the reference data set. Fire with visible smoke plumes are detected in the SPOT scenes, while the hotspots in MODIS data are detected using NASA's new version 4 fire detection algorithm. The detection performance is characterized by the commission error rate (false alarms) and the omission error rate (undetected fires). In the Sumatra and Kalimantan study area, the commission rate and the omission rate are 27% and 34% respectively. False alarms are probably due to recently burnt areas with warm surfaces. False negative detection occur where there are long smoke plumes and where fires occur in densely vegetated areas.

  • Spatial outliers in remotely sensed imagery represent observed quantities showing unusual values compared to their neighbor pixel values. There have been various methods to detect the spatial outliers based on spatial autocorrelations in statistics and data mining. These methods may be applied in detecting forest fire pixels in the MODIS imageries from NASA's AQUA satellite. This is because the forest fire detection can be referred to as finding spatial outliers using spatial variation of brightness temperature. In this paper, we propose a new forest fire detection algorithm which is based on local spatial association analysis, and test the proposed algorithm to evaluate its applicability. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, the results were compared with the MODIS fire product provided by the NASA MODIS Science Team, which showed the possibility of the proposed algorithm in detecting the fire pixels.

  • 4D film is just a film that made by adding some physical effects to 3D film or general film. In order to provide physical effects to the audience, the data that make the physical effect must be added to each frames. In this paper, we proposed a video detection system that can efficiently provide physical effects by assessing the present situation such as explosion scene, snowing scene. The proposed video detection system contains an algorithm for fire detection by using R color and $C_r$ value, and also an algorithm for snow detection by using RGB color model. The system constitutes in a MCU that from 8051 family. In the performance evaluations, the result shows that 91% of detection rate in case of fire and 25% of false detection rate in case of snow. Also the system is capable of providing physical effects automatically.

  • In this paper, we proposed image-processing technique for automatic real-time fire and smoke detection in tunnel fire environment. To minimize false detection of fire in tunnel we used motion information of video sequence. And this makes it possible to detect exact position of event in early stage with detection, test, and verification procedures. In addition, by comparing false detection elimination results of each step, we have proved the validity and efficiency of proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents a fire detection criterion based on flame color, spatial and temporal characteristic analysis of color fire images. To propose the criterion, Firstly the fire candidate regions were selected by using analyzed Cr and Y threshold value, and then texture analysis of candidate regions was performed by using DCT. Finally variation of Y values of these regions was calculated for temporal analysis. The proposed fire detection criterion was simulated by using fifteen test images and practicality was verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a model for detecting efficient fire identification to prevent fires that can lead to various industrial accidents, farmland and large forest fires, with the widespread use of various chemicals and flammable substances as modern technology advances. This paper presents an algorithm that can detect fire smoke in a high-efficiency and short time using images, and an algorithm based on SVM(Support Vector Machine) and K fold cross-verification technologies. By analyzing images, fire and smoke detection algorithms have relatively superior detection performance compared to existing algorithms, and the analysis of fire and smoke characteristics detected in this paper is analyzed stably and efficiently and is expected to be used in various fields that may be exposed to fire risks in the future.

  • For forest fire monitoring in relatively cool area like Siberia, design of Decision Support System (DSS) is proposed. The DSS is consisted of three different algorithms to detect potential fires from NOAA AVHRR image. The algorithm developed by CCRS (Canada Center for Remote Sensing) uses fixed thresholds for multi-channel information like one by ESA (European Space Agency). The algorithm of IGBP (International Geosphere Biosphere Program) involves contextual information in deriving fire pixels. CCRS and IGBP algorithms are rather liberal compared to more conservative ESA algorithm. Fire pixel information from the three algorithms is presented to the user. The user considers all these information in making decision about the location fire takes place.

  • Recently, the importance of an early response has been emphasized due to the large fire. The most efficient method of extinguishing a large fire is early response to a small flame. To implement this solution, we propose a fire detection mechanism based on a deep learning artificial intelligence. In this study, a small amount of data sets is manipulated by an image augmentation technique using rotating, tilting, blurring, and distorting effects in order to increase the number of the data sets by 5 times, and we study the flame detection algorithm using faster R-CNN.
