  • In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to analyze an effect of the aspect ratio on smoke movement in tunnel fires using FDS 3.0. It was confirmed an application for tunnel fires in comparison with experimental results. The results showed relatively good agreement with experimental data within 1$0^{\circ}C$. Clear height of CFD by velocity distribution was about 3% higher than that of experiment. Smoke movement was confirmed by the analysis of temperature and velocity field. Results from variation of the aspect ratio showed good agreement with experimental data. The temperature at the vicinity of the fire source became lowly with the increase of the aspect ratio. But, decrease rate of the temperature was reduced by the decrease of the heat loss to the width direction.

  • This study estimated the forest damage of Kangwon-Do fire disaster occurred April 2005. For the estimation, the delineation of fire damaged area was performed using SPOT-4 satellite image and DSM (Digital surface model)/DTM (Digital Terrain Model) was generated by airborne and ground LiDAR data to calculate forests height. The damaged amount of money was calculated in forest area using stand volume formula, combining the canopy height from forest height model and digital stock map. The total forest damage amounted to 3.9 billion won.

  • This study is a survey research to improve the fire-fighting ambulance interior design safer and more efficient to identify the type of structure and functional problems 119 ambulance. When the paramedics and four degrees to over 755 people modify the target report and related literature on the future development of an ambulance for patient safety at the 2007 British National Patients Safety Agency (NPSA) and was used as a complementary tool. General characteristics questionnaire was composed of items for your design improvements for ambulance promote safety and efficiency. The data were collected by distributing a questionnaire e-mail or in person. The collected data were processed using the SPSS 20.0 statistical program, the general characteristics as frequency analysis, percentage, ambulance interior design improvement-related items were analyzed using the chi-square verified. As a result, this research elicited that vans converted fire ambulance cars have a problem with the narrow interior space and truck converted fire ambulance cars should be comfortable to drive in ride quality. In addition, we also found that the improvement of paramedics treatment position and the paramedic's personnel safety belt are required. Based on these results, we propose that a number of improvements are needed in the fire-fighting ambulance car.

  • Forest fire poses a significant threat to the environment and society, affecting carbon cycle and surface energy balance, and resulting in socioeconomic losses. Widely used multi-spectral satellite image-based approaches for burned area detection have a problem in that they do not work under cloudy conditions. Therefore, in this study, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from Europe Space Agency, which can be collected in all weather conditions, were used to identify forest fire damaged area based on a series of processes including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and K-means clustering. Four forest fire cases, which occurred in Gangneung·Donghae and Goseong·Sokcho in Gangwon-do of South Korea and two areas in North Korea on April 4, 2019, were examined. The estimated burned areas were evaluated using fire reference data provided by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS) for two forest fire cases in South Korea, and differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR) for all four cases. The average accuracy using the NIFOS reference data was 86% for the Gangneung·Donghae and Goseong·Sokcho fires. Evaluation using dNBR showed an average accuracy of 84% for all four forest fire cases. It was also confirmed that the stronger the burned intensity, the higher detection the accuracy, and vice versa. Given the advantage of SAR remote sensing, the proposed statistical processing and K-means clustering-based approach can be used to quickly identify forest fire damaged area across the Korean Peninsula, where a cloud cover rate is high and small-scale forest fires frequently occur.

  • This study tested the wood used in building interiors; each type had various incident heat fluxes based on their thickness. The combustion characteristics measured were effective heat of combustion, heat release rate peak and arrival time, maximum average rate of heat emission, and piloted ignition temperature. The wood specimens used in the experiment were 4.8 to 18 mm thick. 25, 35, 50, and 60 kW/㎡ were applied to the incident heat flux that the wood specimens were exposed to. The wood specimens tested were two types of medium-density fiberboard (each with a different density), treated red pine, particle board, and plywood. A comprehensive comparison of different fire characteristics was conducted to analyze the fire patterns corresponding to each type of wood in this way, the risk of fire was studied. The risk of fire was particularly high for particle board. The results of quantifying the fire characteristics of the types of wood studied could function as important input data with which to calculate the fire load of composite combustibles.

  • The study performed an actual fire experiment in order to propose the heat release rate of automobile that is the most basic architectural element for the fire safety design in a tunnel, whose importance has been recognized as the underground traffic tunnels are planned in Korean metropolitan cities. The heat release rate of a van is measured by the large scale calorimeter, in which the law of oxygen consumption is applied, and the fire expansion characteristics in a tunnel by placing two passenger cars nearby one another in the tunnel. As the results, the heat release rate of the van was revealed to be 5.9 MW, and carbon monoxide was emitted 482 ppm at a maximum. In case of two passenger car experiment for the fire expansion characteristics, the adjacent car was ignited about 3 minutes 30 seconds after the fire occurrence, and the complete fire was developed after 15 minutes. The maximum heat release was 9 MW. The results from the actual fire experiment can be an important input data for future quantitative analysis as well as an element applicable to a tunnel disaster preventive equipment design.

  • This study aims to construct the performance data for smoke-control zone and realize the safety of injection and pressurization room which is composed of supply air pressure zone, vestibule, smoke-control zone and stairwell. To obtain this, smoke-control system and the device of the opening-closing force of fire door are manufactured. This subject is the analysis of the closing force, angular velocity and fire door size in the case of fixed volume flow rate. Based on the results, closing force increased as fire door size and closing angular velocity increases. Also, it is remark that there exists a critical angular velocity, which maintains constant maximum closing force even though the angular velocity increases more.

  • Fire fighting foam is expanded when it mix with many water in mechanical method. It have adaptability, mass production possibility, long-time storage possibility. But foam isn't recommended that it use for extinguish the fire in winter. Because of, expansion ratio is changed according to exterior temperature and environment. In this study, we analysis to effect of expansion according to temperature and develop auto mixing system available for fire engine. As a result of non-standard drug mixture is 3.0% up to 30.08% depending on the temperature of the fire showed that the difference in performance occurs. In addition, analysis of the applicability of automatic mixing system design values and actual experimental data as 0.012% maximum error of the applicability of the system obtained according nataname was judged.

  • In Korea, Crowds, as well as more complex and larger structures, have been caused more victims in the event of fire. In that situation, EMSS should have done triage the patients according to their severity in the field, treat with standard guidelines as like advanced burn life support and transfer to appropriate facility. But in many cases, they didn't practice like that. The purpose of this study is to give basic data for proper emergency medical services by analysing EMSS of large scaled fire in Korea and suggesting some improvement methods. The improvment methods are like this ; First, developing of protocols about burn patient is needed for EMT and dispatcher. Second, Legal approval for advanced treatment is needed for EMT. Third, Fire-helicoptors are needed in Daejeon and Jeju. And Emergency Medical Helicoptors are needed in EMSS. Forth, more advanced emergency medical centers of burn must be established. Sixth, more pocket-mask and burn sheet are needed for 119 rescuer. Finally, building owners must change inflammable materials as non-inflammable materials and educate fire-prevention and first-aid to employees.
