The importance of subsurface information is becoming crucial in urban area due to increase of underground construction. The position of underground facilities should be identified precisely before excavation work. Geophyiscal exporation method such as ground penetration radar (GPR) can be useful to investigate the subsurface facilities. GPR transmits electromagnetic waves to the ground and analyzes the reflected signals to determine the location and depth of subsurface facilities. Unfortunately, the readability of GPR signal is not favorable. To overcome this deficiency and automate the GPR signal processing, deep learning technique has been introduced recently. The accuracy of deep learning model can be improved with abundant training data. The ground is inherently heteorogeneous and the spacially variable ground properties can affact on the GPR signal. However, the effect of ground heterogeneity on the GPR signal has yet to be fully investigated. In this study, ground heterogeneity is simulated based on the fractal theory and GPR simulation is carried out by using gprMax. It is found that as the fractal dimension increases exceed 2.0, the error of fitting parameter reduces significantly. And the range of water content should be less than 0.14 to secure the validity of analysis.
In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for hydrodynamic motion and structural performance on four different concrete floating structures, which have same cross-section but different length. The hydrodynamic analysis of floating structures is carried out using ANSYS AQWA with the different 34 wave load on regular wave period from three seconds to ten seconds in 35 m water depth. In order to evaluate structural performance of floating structures under the critical wave load which obtained from hydrodynamic analysis. The integrated analysis is also carried out through the mapping method, which can directly connect the wave-induced hydraulic pressure obtained form ANSYS AQWA to Finite Element Model in ANSYS Mechanical. As a results of this study, the hydrodynamic motion of floating structures is decreased as the length of structure increased. It means that the effect of wave-structure interaction is strongly dependent on the relationship between a wave period and a length of structure. Moreover, it is found that tension stress on bottom slab of floating structure is occurred by the critical wave load, the sectional force is not influenced by length of a structure.
Suction buckets have been widely used for offshore structures such as anchors for floating facilities, and the foundations of offshore wind energy turbines. However, the design guidelines for suction buckets have not been clearly suggested. Therefore, this study performed the numerical analysis by using ABAQUS (2010) to evaluate bearing capacities and load-movement behaviors of the suction bucket in NC clay. For the numerical analysis, the depth ratio L/D (L=embedded length of skirt; D=diameter of a bucket) was varied from 0.25 to 1.0. The analysis results showed that the L/D ratio has a significant effect on the bearing capacity, and the vertical and horizontal capacities respectively increased by about 40% and 90%, when L/D ratio increased from 0.25 to 1.0. At the vertical loading, the bucket showed the similar failure mode with a deep foundation, so the shaft and toe resistances can be separately evaluated. At the horizontal loading, the bucket with L/D=O.25 showed the sliding failure mode and the bucket with
In this study, the behavior of self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles was investigated by using a numerical study and field tests in urban excavations. This earth retaining wall can provide stable support against lateral earth pressures through its use of stabilizing piles that provide passive resistance to lateral earth pressures arising due to ground excavations. Field tests at two sites were performed to verify the performance of instrumented retaining wall with stabilizing piles. Furthermore, detailed 3D numerical analyses were conducted to provide insight into the in situ wall behavior. The 3D numerical methodology in the present study represents the behavior of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles. A number of 3D numerical analyses were carried out on the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles to assess the results stemming from wide variations of influencing parameters such as the soil condition, the pile spacing, the distance between the front pile and the rear pile, and the pile embedded depth. Based on the results of the parametric study, the maximum horizontal displacement and the maximum bending moment significantly decreased when the retaining wall with stabilizing piles is used. Moreover, the horizontal displacement reduction effect of influencing parameters such as the pile spacing and the distance between the front pile and the rear pile is more sensitive in sandy soil, with a higher friction angle compared to clayey soil. In engineering practice, reducing the pile spacing and increasing the distance between the front pile and the rear pile can effectively improve the stability of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles.
Parametric studies for various site conditions by using 3d numerical model were carried out in order to estimate dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure system in dry soil deposits. Proposed model was analyzed in time domain using FLAC3D which is commercial finite difference code to properly simulate nonlinear response of soil under strong earthquake. Mohr-Coulomb criterion was adopted as soil constitutive model. Soil nonlinearity was considered by adopting the hysteretic damping model, and an interface model which can simulate separation and slip between soil and pile was adopted. Simplified continuum modeling was used as boundary condition to reduce analysis time. Also, initial shear modulus and yield depth were appropriately determined for accurate simulation of system's nonlinear behavior. Parametric study was performed by varying weight of superstructure, pile length, pile head fixity, soil relative density with proposed numerical model. From the results of parametric study, it is identified that inertial force induced by superstructure is dominant on dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure system and effect of kinematic force induced by soil movement was relatively small. Difference in dynamic behavior according to the pile length and pile head fixity was also numerically investigated.
Precast concrete deck has many advantages comparing with the in-situ concrete deck, and has been successfully applied to replacement of the deteriorated decks and to the newly constructed highway bridges in domestic region. In order to apply the precast decks into the railway bridges, however, differences of the load characteristics between the highway and the railway should be properly taken into account including the train load, longitudinal force of the continuous welded rail, acceleration or braking force, temperature change and shrinkage. Proper level of the longitudinal prestress of the tendons that can ensure integrity of the transverse joints in the deck system is of a primary importance. To this aim, the longitudinal tensile stresses induced by the design loads are derived using three-dimensional finite element analyses for the frequently adopted PSC composite girder railway bridge. The effect of the temperature change is also investigated considering the design codes and theoretical equations in an in-depth manner. The estimated proper prestress level to counteract those tensile stresses is above 2.4 MPa, which is similar to the case of the highway bridges.
Purpose: The aim was to investigate the effect of implant thread designs on the stress dissipation of the implant. Materials and methods: The threads evaluated in this study included the V-shaped, buttress, reverse buttress, and square-shaped threads, which were of the same size (depth). Building four different implant/bone complexes each consisting of an implant with one of the 4 different threads on its cylindrical body (
Stability of the braced earth wall in the composite ground, which is composed of the jointed base rocks and the soil strata depends on the earth pressure acting on it. In most cases, the earth pressure is calculated by the empirical method, in which base rocks are considered as a soil strata with the shear strength parameters of base rocks. In this case the effect of the joint dips of the jointed base rocks is ignored. Therefore, the calculated earth pressure is smaller than the actual earth pressure. In this study, the magnitude and the distribution of the earth pressure acting on the braced wall in the composite ground depending on the joint dips of the base rocks and the ratio of soil strata and base rocks were experimentally studied. Two dimensional large-scale model tests were conducted in a large scale test facility (height 3.0 m, length 3.0 m and width 0.5 m) by installing 10 supports in a scale of 1/14.5. The test ground was presumed with the base rock ratio of the composite ground of 65%:35% and 50%:50% and with the joint dips for each base rock layer,
The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70
