  • In order to investigate the evolution of strain states during screw rolling, the samples of pure copper rod were rolled in a three-roll screw rolling mill. Microstructure observations and hardness measurements were carried out for examining the deformation during screw rolling. In addition, the finite element method (FEM) was employed to calculate. The strain states reveal that the shear strain plays a dominant role in the deformation during screw rolling.

  • The microstructure with fine and uniform AGS(austenite grain size) along thickness direction over no recrystallization temperature is strongly required for production of the high strength steels. The previous AGS prediction only based on the average strain improves to find the rolling conditions for accomplishment of the fine grain, but cannot find those for uniform grain. In this paper, an integrated mathematical model for prediction of the strain distribution along thickness direction is developed by carrying out finite element simulation for a series of rolling conditions. Also, the AGS distribution after rough rolling is predicted by applying the proposed model with AGS prediction model.

  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) process at room temperature has been newly proposed in recent years to overcome the shape accuracy and sticking problem induced in a conventional NIL process. Success of the room temperature NIL relies on the accurate understand of the mechanical behavior of the polymer. Since a conventional NIL process has to heat a polymer above the glass transition temperature to deform the physical shape of the polymer with a mold pattern, viscoelastic property of polymer have major effect on the NIL process. However, rate dependent behavior of polymer is important in the room temperature NIL process because a mold with engraved patterns is rapidly pressed onto a substrate coated with the polymer by the hydraulic equipment. In this paper, finite element analysis of the room temperature NIL process is performed with considering the strain rate dependent behavior of the polymer. The analyses with the variation of imprinting speed and imprinting pattern are carried out in order to investigate the effect of such process parameters on the room temperature NIL process. The analyses results show that the deformed shape and imprint force is quite different with the variation of punch speed because the dynamic behavior of the polymer is considered with the rate dependent plasticity model. The results provide a guideline for the determination of process conditions in the room temperature NIL process.

  • This paper presents development of a Finite Element Analysis program. The program was developed on the based of second-dimensional plane strain rigid plasticity finite element analysis and an implicit program is coded. The program was tested by being applied to the axisymetric hydrostatic bulge forming processes using the circle dies. By the Finite Element Analysis at the fluid in chamber and at the blank material, we could know that the hydrostatic bulge forming processes can be influenced of material, the diameter of product and the forming velocity The developed Finite Element Analysis program was approved by the analysis results about forming variables.

  • The analysis of superplastic sheet forming process is studied by the use of the finite element method using a convected coordinate system and a skew boundary condition. In the formulation, the large inelastic behavior of the superplastic material is described as incompressible, nonlinear, viscous flow. The formulation is then approximated to the finite dimensional space with the use of membrane elements, which results in algebraic linear equations. In addition to the finite element formulation, a pressure cycle control algorithm is combined in the analysis for optimization of the forming time, which deals with the maximization of the strain rate sensitivity, the protection of the thickness reduction, the consistency of the desired strain rate and improvement of formability.

  • The thermomechanical elasto-plastic problems in hot forging of the porous metals are analyzed using the thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method. This finite element program has been formulated using the yield condition advanced by Lee and Kim and developed using the thermo-elasto-plastic time integration procedure. Thermomechanical responses and densification behaviors of the porous metals during hot forging are calcucated at various initial relative densities, strain rates and temperatures. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • Many researches have been already done on the issues of high temperature deformation and the microstructural evolution. The information has been very useful for the plasticity industry, especially successful for the extrusion. However, the parts made with forging usually have a complex shape. It is difficult to control the distribution of the variables like strain, strain rate and temperature rise due to the working heat during a hot-forging process. Consequently, the microstructural variation could be occurred depending on the plastic deformation history that the forged part would get during a hot forging. In the present study, the microstructural characteristic of a hot-forged 6061 aluminum alloy has been discussed on the aspect of grain size evolution. A forging of 6061 aluminum alloy has been carried out for a complex shape with a dimensional variation. Also, finite element analysis has been done to understand how the deformation variables such as strain, strain rate give an influence on the microstructure of a hot forged aluminum product.

  • An elasto-plastic finite element method using the theory of strain gradient plasticity is proposed to evaluate the size dependency of structural plasticity that occurs when the configuration size decreases to micron scale. For this method, we suggest a low-order plane and three-dimensional displacement-based elements, eliminating the need for a high order, many degrees of freedom, a mixed element, or super elements, which have been considered necessary in previous researches. The proposed method can be performed in the framework of nonlinear incremental analysis in which plastic strains are calculated and averaged at nodes. These strains are then interpolated and differentiated for gradient calculation. We adopted a strain-gradient-hardening constitutive equation from the Taylor dislocation model, which requires the plastic strain gradient. The developed finite elements are tested numerically on the basis of typical size-effect problems such as micro-bending, micro-torsion, and micro-voids. With respect to the strain gradient plasticity, i.e., the size effects, the results obtained by using the proposed method, which are simple in their calculation, are in good agreement with the experimental results cited in previously published papers.

  • To describe the effect of the numerous and various oriented microcracks on the compressive and tensile concrete behaviors, the directional nonlocality is defined. The plasticity model using multiple failure criteria is developed for RC planar members in tension-compression. The crack damages are defined in the pre-determined reference orientations, and then the total crack damage is calculated by integrating multi-oriented crack damages. To describe the effect of directional nonlocality on the anisotropic tensile damage, based on the existing test results, the nonlocal damage factor is defined in each reference orientation. The reduced compressive strength in the cracked concrete is defined by the multi-oriented crack damages defined as excluding the tensile normal plastic strain from the compressive equivalent plastic strain. The proposed model is implemented to finite element analysis, and it is verified by comparisons with various existing panel test results.
