  • In this paper, the application of finite element method to design the shape of load cell as an illustrative case study is described. The relationship between the various shapes of load cell and their stress characteristic were analyzed by COSMOS simulation program. The results obtained from the proposed analysis can be applied to determine the appropriate position of strain gauges for good quality load cell. The experimental results show the good efficiency of the proposed technique.

  • Many process parameters have an effect on the auto-body panel forming process. A well-designed blank shape causes the material to flow smoothly, reduces the punch and yields a product with uniform thickness distribution. Therefore, the determination of an initial blank shape plays the important role of saving time and cost in the auto-body panel forming process. For these reasons, some approaches to estimate the initial blank shape have been implemented in this paper, the one-step approach by using a finite element inverse method will be introduced to predict the initial blank shape the developed program is applied to auto-body panel forming.

  • The performance enhancement of various damping systems from natural hazards has become an highly important issue in engineering field. In this paper, ENTA hysteretic dampers were tested under cyclic loadings to evaluate their performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation. The test results showed that the hysteretic dampers are effective damping systems to enhance the buildings performance for remodeling and retrofit of buildings. Also, the hysteretic dampers were modeled in FEM(Finite Element Method) structural analysis program. As comparing the computer modeling and the experiment, this study model reflects the nonlinear behavior of steel and derives the hysteresis loop.

  • Hyperelastic constitutive equations for nonlinear deformation of the periodontal ligament were investigated. The parameters in the strain energy potentials were obtained from experimental data for uniaxial and shear responses of the human periodontal ligament. The hyperelastic constitutive equations based on two strain energy potentials was also compared with the linear elastic equation, which is recently reported. The best fitted parameters in the strain energy potentials was applied to finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate special orthodontic treatment of a mandibular canine.

  • Densification behaviors of mixed metal powder under high temperature were investigated. Experimental data of mixed copper and tool steel powder with various volume fractions of Cu powder were obtained under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. By mixing the creep potentials of McMeeking and co-workers and of Abouaf and co-workers originally for pure powder, the mixed creep potentials with various volume fractions of Cu powder were employed in the constitutive models. The constitutive equations were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification of mixed powder under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. Finite element calculations by using the creep potentials of Abouaf and co-workers agreed reasonably well with experimental data, however, those by McMeeking and co-workers underestimate experimental data as observed in the case of pure metal powders.

  • The paper concerns the modelling of rigid and semi-rigid steel-concrete composite joints under monotonic loading through use of the Abaqus program, a widespread finite element code. By comparing numerical and experimental results obtained on cruciform tests, it is shown that the proposed modelling allows a good fit of the global joint response in terms of moment-rotation law. Even the local response in terms of stresses and strains is adequately predicted. Hence, this numerical approach may represent a useful tool for attaining a better understanding of experimental results. It may also be used to perform parametric analyses and to calibrate simplified mechanical models for practical applications.

  • The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.

  • In this paper, a mathematical framework based on a homogenisation technique to simulate 'umbrella arch reinforcement system' (UARS) and its implementation into a 3D Finite Element program that can consider stage construction situations are presented. The constitutive model developed allows considering the main design parameters of the problem and only requires geometrical and mechanical properties of the constituents. Additionally, the use of a homogenisation approach implies that the generation of the Finite Element mesh can be easily produced and that re-meshing is not required as basic geometrical parameters such as the orientation of the pipes are changed. The model developed is used to simulate tunnelling with the UARS. From the analyses, the effects of the main design parameters on the elastic and the elastoplastic analyses are considered.

  • This study was carried out an experimental and finite element analysis on the fracture behavior of straight pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area has an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.92 and an eroded length of l=25, 50 and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate failure behaviors. In regards to the relation ship between pressure and eroded ratio, the criterion that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from this calculation. The results of this calculation were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.

  • The major objective of this study is to establish analytical technique in order to analyze the behaviour of semi-solid material considering induction heating of the billet. Induction heating process is analyzed by using commerical finite element software. ANSYS. The finite element program, SFAC2D, for the simulation of deformation in semi-solid state is developed in the present study. The semi-solid behaviour is described by a viscoplastic model for the solid phase, and by the Darcy's law for the liquid flow. Simple compression and closed-die compression process considering induction heating are analyzed, and also it is found that the distribution of initial solid fraction of the billet has an important effect on deformation behaviour of semi-solid material. In order to verify the effectiveness of proposed analytical technique the simulation result is compared with experimental result.
