In the finite element analysis of forming process, objects are described with a finite number of elements and nodes and the approximated solutions can be obtained by the variational principle. One of the shortcomings of a finite element analysis is that the structure of mesh has become inefficient and unusable because discretization error increases as deformation proceeds due to severe distortion of elements. If the state of current mesh satisfies a certain remeshing criterion, analysis is stopped instantly and resumed with a reconstructed mesh. In the study, a new remeshing algorithm using tetrahedral elements has been developed, which is adapted to the desired mesh density. In order to reduce the discretization error, desired mesh sizes in each lesion of the workpiece are calculated using the Zinkiewicz and Zhu's a-posteriori error estimation scheme. The pre-constructed mesh is constructed based on the modified point insertion technique which is adapted to the density function. The object domain is divided into uniformly-sized sub-domains and the numbers of nodes in each sub-domain are redistributed, respectively. After finishing the redistribution process of nodes, a tetrahedral mesh is reconstructed with the redistributed nodes, which is adapted to the density map and resulting in good mesh quality. A goodness and adaptability of the constructed mesh is verified with a testing measure. The proposed remeshing technique is applied to the finite element analyses of forging processes.
One of the most important factor to be considered for the analysis of sheet metal forming processes is the tool surface description for arbitrarily- shaped sheet metal parts. In the present study , finite element approach is used to describe the arbitrarily shaped tool surface. In finite element mesh approach, tool surfaces ar, described by finite elements. The finite elements mesh description of the tool surface, which is originally described by CAD data, needs much time and time-consuming graphic operation. The method, however, has been widely used to describe a complex tool surface. In the present study, the contact searching algorithm for the finite element mesh approach is developed based on cell strategy method and sheet surface normal scheme. For the verification purpose, a clover cup drawing, Baden-Baden oilpan problem and a trunk floor drawing were investigated. The computational results based on the finite element approach were compared with the results of available parametric patch approach and experiments.
In the finite element simulation of hot forging processes using hexahedron, remeshing of a flash is very difficult. The mesh compression method is a remeshing technique to construct an effective hexahedral mesh. However, because mesh is distorted during the compression procedure or the mesh compression method, mesh smoothing is necessary to improve the mesh Qualify. in this study, several geometric mesh smoothing techniques and a matrix norm optimization technique are applied and compared which is more adaptive to the mesh compression method.
In this study, a remeshing algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation method is developed. In the finite element simulation of forging process, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements and distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical error will be highly increased. However, it is not desirable to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the analysis error by constructing locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this paper, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by using a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimized smoothing technique is adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.
Polygonal finite element provides a great flexibility in mesh generation of crack propagation problems where the topology of the domain changes significantly. However, the control of the discretization error in such problems is a main concern. In this paper, a polygonal-FEM is presented in modeling of crack propagation problems via an automatic adaptive mesh refinement procedure. The adaptive mesh refinement is accomplished based on the Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator in conjunction with a weighted SPR technique. Adaptive mesh refinement is employed in some steps for reduction of the discretization error and not for tracking the crack. In the steps that no adaptive mesh refinement is required, local modifications are applied on the mesh to prevent poor polygonal element shapes. Finally, several numerical examples are analyzed to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the proposed computational algorithm in crack propagation problems.
In this paper new mesh generation method is proposed for crack propagation analysis based on the finite element method. The main tool of the method is the Delaunay Triangulation, Transfinete element mapping, and it allows the setting of the arbitrary crack-growth increment and the arbitrary crack direction. It has the form of a subroutine, and it is easily introduced as a subroutine for any mesh generation method which is based on the blocking method.
Trimming line design plays an important role in obtaining accurate edge profile after flanging. Compared to the traditional section-based method, simulation-based method can produce more accurate trimming line by considering deformation mechanics. Recently, the use of a finite element inverse method is proposed to obtain optimal trimming line. By analyzing flanging inversely from the final mesh after flanging, trimming line can be obtained from initial mesh on the drawing die surface. Initial guess generation fer finite element inverse method is obtained by developing the final mesh onto drawing tool mesh. Incremental development method is adopted to handle irregular mesh with various size and undercut. In this study, improved incremental development algorithm to handle complex shape is suggested. When developing the final mesh layer by layer, the algorithm which can define the development sequence and the position of developing nodes is thoroughly described. Flanging of front fender is analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method. By using section-based trimming line and simulation-based trimming line, incremental finite element simulations are carried out. In comparison with experiment, it is clearly shown that the present method yields more accurate edge profile than section-based method.
Knowledge of the complex biomechanical behavior of the human mandible is of great importance in various clinical situations. Various approaches can be used to evaluate the physical behavior of bone. In this study, we developed the voxel mesh program(Bionix) and generated FE models of mandible using Bionix and using handmade work and compared them with free vibration results derived from finite element analysis(FEA). The data of FE models based on DICOM File exported from Computed tomography(CT). Comparing the two models, we found a good correlation about mode type and natural frequency. The voxel based finite element mesh is a valid and accurate method to predict parameters of the complex biomechanical behavior of human mandibles.
An elastic-plastic finite element analysis is performed to investigate detailed closure behavior of fatigue cracks and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The finite element analysis performed under plane stress using 4-node isoparametric elements can predict fatigue crack closure behavior. The mesh of constant element size along crack surface can not predict the opening level of fatigue crack. The crack opening level for the constant mesh size increases linearly from initial crack growth. The crack opening level for variable mesh size, is almost flat after crack tip has passed the monotonic plastic zone. The prediction of crack opening level using the variable mesh size proportioning the reversed plastic zone size with the opening stress intensity factors presents a good agreement with the experimental data regardless of stress ratios.

An advanced design environment , which is based on adaptive and knowledge -based finite elements (INTELMESH), has been developed. Unlike other approaches, INTEMMESH incorporates the information about the object geometry as well as the boundary and loading conditions to generate an ${\alpha}$-priori finite element mesh which is more refined around the critical regions of the problem domain. INTEMMESH is designed for planar domains and axisymmetric 3-D structures of elasticity and heat transfer subjected to mechanical and thermal loading . It intelligently identifies the critical regions/points in the problem domain and utilize the new concepts of substructuring and wave propagation to choose the proper mesh size for them. INTEMMESH generates well-shaped triangular elements by applying trangulartion and Laplacian smoothing procedures. The adaptive analysis involves the intial finite elements analyze and an efficient ${\alpha}$-posteriori error analysis involves the initial finite element anal sis and an efficient ${\alpha}$-posteriori error analysis and estimation . Once a problem is defined , the system automatically builds a finite element model and analyzes the problem though automatic iterative process until the error reaches a desired level. It has been shown that the proposed approach which initiates the process with an ${\alpha}$-priori, and near optimum mesh of the object , converges to the desired accuracy in less time and at less cost. Such an advanced design/analysis environment will provide the capability for rapid product development and reducing the design cycle time and cost.
