  • This paper presents an explanatory study of combining the finite element and boundary element methods to achieve an efficient and accurate analysis of frame structure containing shear wall. This model analyzes the frame by finite element method and the shear wall by boundary element method. The purpose of this study is the specific case that boundary element is surrounded by finite element. If material properties of shear wall are relatively the very smaller than it of frame structure, the displacement shape of each node is calculated exactly. And if the solution of displacement is the larger, the displacement shape is approximated more accurately.

  • In this paper, the residual stresses for the wide-band laser heat treatment using a polygon mirror have been analyzed. The results of FE analysis are compared with the experimental results. ANSYS Version 5.3, a commercial FE-code, is used for the FE stress analysis. The structural analysis was performed on after thermal analysis. The residual stress distribution across the hardened area was measured by the X-ray diffraction technique. The laser hardening conditions, 2kW laser power and 2mm/s travel speed, were used for the experiment and the FE analysis. Analysis results, which is maximum tensile residual stress is about 143MPa and maximum compressive residual stress is about -380MPa. Under same parameters with the analysis, experimental results indicate that MTRS is about 152MPa and MCRS is about -312MPa. The experimental results is about 6% higher than the FE analysis. As a result, residual stress data from the experiment close well with that of the FE analysis.

  • This paper presents a novel finite element (FE) model for analyzing coupled flutter of long-span bridges using the commercial FE package ANSYS. This model utilizes a specific user-defined element Matrix27 in ANSYS to model the aeroelastic forces acting on the bridge, wherein the stiffness and damping matrices are expressed in terms of the reduced wind velocity and flutter derivatives. Making use of this FE model, damped complex eigenvalue analysis is carried out to determine the complex eigenvalues, of which the real part is the logarithm decay rate and the imaginary part is the damped vibration frequency. The condition for onset of flutter instability becomes that, at a certain wind velocity, the structural system incorporating fictitious Matrix27 elements has a complex eigenvalue with zero or near-zero real part, with the imaginary part of this eigenvalue being the flutter frequency. Case studies are provided to validate the developed procedure as well as to demonstrate the flutter analysis of cable-supported bridges using ANSYS. The proposed method enables the bridge designers and engineering practitioners to analyze flutter instability by using the commercial FE package ANSYS.

  • This paper provides the methods to estimate the burst pressures of the pipes with defects, based on finite element analyses. FE codes are frequently adopted for the simulations of the burst tests of the pipes with defects. However, those do not give the burst pressure directly. Because the post-processing should be followed; determination of the fracture strains in accordance with triaxialities, monitoring the strains of pipes, etc. In the present work, these efforts are implemented in the user subroutine UHARD within the general-purpose FE code, ABAQUS. Four fracture criterions are introduced to estimate the burst pressure of pipes, and a simple fracture strain estimate is also developed. FE analyses for the pipe with gouge and corrosion are performed, and the results are compared with the experiment results.

  • The analysis of laterally loaded piles is generally carried out by idealizing the soil mass as Winkler springs, which is a crude approximation; however this approach gives reasonable results for many practical applications. For more precise analysis, the three- dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is one of the best alternatives. The FEA uses the modulus of elasticity $E_s$ of soil, which can be determined in the laboratory by conducting suitable laboratory tests on undisturbed soil samples. Because of the different concepts and idealizations in these two approaches, the results are expected to vary significantly. In order to investigate this fact in detail, three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out using different combinations of soil and pile characteristics. The FE results related to the pile deflections are compared with the closed-form solutions in which the modulus of subgrade reaction $k_s$ is evaluated using the well-known $k_s-E_s$ relationship. In view of the observed discrepancy between the FE results and the closed-form solutions, an improved relationship between the modulus of subgrade reaction and the elastic constants is proposed, so that the solutions from the closed-form equations and the FEA can be closer to each other.

  • Weatherstrip seals protect passengers form noise, dust, rain and wind out of the vehicle. The more contact area between a body frame and a weatherstrip, the higher efficiency of sealing. A weatherstrip is a sort of an elastomer. Mechanical properties of the weatherstrip is obtained by uniaxial tension test. In this study, nonlinear finite element(FE) analysis is performed to obtain displacements and contact shapes of the weatherstrip. The FE model is developed by using Ogden-foam formulation. In the results of nonlinear FE analysis, the most valuable deformation of the weatherstrip occurred when displacement control value reaches 7.2mm. Severe deformation is observed as the displacement control value become more increased.

  • Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction in concrete that alkalis in cement react with reactive silica in aggregate in the presence of water. When ASR takes place, it produces gels that absorb water and expand. Swelling of ASR gels can damage concrete and cause cracking and volume expansion in concrete structure. In this paper, mechanical consequences of ASR on concrete are simulated by a finite element (FE) analysis. An FE model of concrete is built. The evolution of concrete mechanical properties subjected to ASR is achieved by FE analyses. The constitutive model of concrete is attained via the FE analysis. A case study is used to demonstrate the proposed method. The simulated results using the proposed model are in good agreement with the observations of concrete with ASR reported in the literature. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.

  • A drive shaft is used to transmit torque and rotation through the connection of components of a drive train. Recently, a monobloc drive shaft without welding regions is developed to improve the safety of the drive shaft. The drive shaft bears the shear stress induced by torque. The objective of this paper is to investigate into the structural safety of a monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Elasto-plastic finite element (FE) analysis is performed to estimate the deformation behavior of the drive shaft and stress-strain distribution in the drive shaft. Several techniques are used to create finite element (FE) model of the monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Through the comparison of the results of FE analyses with those of experiments from the viewpoint of rotational angle, appropriate correction coefficients for different load conditions are estimated. The safety of the tubular drive shaft is examined using the results of FE analyses for different load conditions. Finally, it is noted that the designed tubular drive shaft has a sufficient structural safety.

  • Compared to previous in-vitro test, FE model showed reliable motion patterns. A finite element model of a 50th percentile male neck was developed to study the mechanics of whiplash injury while the rear impacts. The model was consisted of the whole cervical vertebrae including part of occipital, intervertebral discs. which were modeled using linear viscoelastic materials and posterior elements. The sliding interfaces were defined to simulate contact phenomena in facet joints and in odontoid process. All ligaments and atlanto-occipital membrane were modeled as nonlinear bar elements. Only muscle elements were not considered. Motion of each cervical vertebra was obtained from the dynamic simulation with a MADYMO model for 15 km/h $40\%$ rear end offset impacts. Soft tissue neck injury(STNI) was investigated with a developed FE model. In FE model analysis, the high stress was appeared at C3/C4 disc in offset impact. Further research is still needed in order to improve the developed neck FE model for many different crash patterns.
