  • The progressive failure following strain localization in concrete can be analyzed effectively using finite element modeling of fracture process zone of concrete with a finite element embedded discontinuity. In this study, a finite element with embedded discontinuous line is utilized for the analysis of progressive failure in concrete. The finite element with embedded discontinuity is a kind of discrete crack element, but the difficulties in discrete crack approach such as remeshing or adding new nodes along with crack growth can be avoided. Using a discontinuous shape function for this element, the displacement discontinuity is embedded within an element and its constitutive equation is modeled from the modeling of fracture process zone. The element stiffness matrix is derived and its dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Then, a finite element analysis program with employed algorithms is developed and failure analysis results using developed finite element program are verified through the comparison with experimental data and other analysis results.

To reduce the effort in preprocessing of finite element analysis, we developed two types of three-dimensional finite element models based on the standard teeth model. Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element models by considering the measuring factors such as angulation, crown inclination, rotation and translations. The finite element analysis for the wire activation with a T-loop arch wire was carried out. Mechanical behavior on the movement and the initial stress for the malocclusion finite element model was shown to agree with the objectives of the actual treatment. Finite element models and procedures of analysis developed in this study would be suitably utilized for the design of initial shape of the wire and determination of activation displacements.

  • Rational dynamic modeling and analysis method f3r complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by using the influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. In this method, the non-linearity of the contact surfaces is considered within a proper range and the boundary effect of the joint model could be eliminated. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam and slide way joints of the vertical type lathe. The method can also be used to other kinds of joint modeling. The results of these analysis were compared with those of Yoshimura models and rigid joint models, which demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed method.

  • This study aims at performing sensitivity analysis of piezoelectric smart structure for minimizing radiated noise from the structure, The structure consists of a flat plate on which disk shaped piezoelectric actuator is mounted, and finite element modeling is used for the structure. The finite element modeling uses a combination of three dimensional piezoelectric, flat shell and transition elements so thus it can take into account the coupling effects of the piezoelectric device precisely and it can also reduce the degrees of freedom of the finite element model. Electric potential on the piezoelectric actuator is taken as a design variable and total radiated power of the structure is chosen as an objective function. The objective function can be represented as Rayleigh's integral equation and is a function of normal displacements of the structure. For the convenience of computation, all degrees of freedom of the finite element equation is condensed out except the normal displacements of the structure. To perform the design sensitivity analysis, the derivative of the objective function with respect to the normal displacements is found, and the derivative of the norma displacements with respect to the design variable is calculated from the finite element equation by using so called the adjoint variable method. The analysis results are compared with those of the finite difference method, and shows a good agreement. This sensitivity analysis is faster and more accurate than the finite difference method. Once the sensitivity analysis program is used for gradient-based optimizations, one could achieve a better convergence rate than non-derivative methods for optimal design of piezoelectric smart structures.

  • This paper concerns the finite element (FE) modeling approach for NATM tunneling in water bearing ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as soil-water characteristics, location of hydraulic boundary conditions, the way of modeling drainage flow, among others. The results indicate that the soil-water characteristics plays the most important role in the tunneling-induced settlement characteristics. Based on the results, modeling guidelines were suggested for stress-pore prssure coupled finite element modeling of NATM tunneling.

  • Machine tool design concepts have evolved towards high efficiency, accurate precision. high structural integrity, and multi-functional systems. Like many other structures, machine tools are also composed of many parts. When these parts are assembled, many kinds of joints are used. In the finite element analysis of these assembled structures, most joints are commonly considered as rigid joints. But, to get the more accurate solution, we need to model these joints in a appropriate manner. In this study, rational dynamic modeling and analysis method for complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. • The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete haunched beams (PSHBs) was investigated in depth using a finite element modeling technique in this study. The efficiency of finite element modeling was investigated in the first stage by taking into account a previous study from the literature. The first stage's findings suggested that finite element modeling might be preferable for modeling PSHBs. In the second stage of the research, a comprehensive parametric study was carried out to determine the effect of each parameter on PSHB load capacity, including haunch angle, prestress level, compressive strength, tensile reinforcement ratio, and shear span to depth ratio. PSHBs and prestressed concrete rectangular beams (PSRBs) were also compared in terms of capacity. Stochastic analysis was used in the third stage to define the uncertainty in PSHB capacity by taking into account uncertainty in geometric and material parameters. Standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and the most appropriate probability density function (PDF) were proposed as a result of the analysis to define the randomness of capacity of PSHBs. In the study's final section, a new equation was proposed for using symbolic regression to predict the load capacity of PSHBs and PSRBs. The equation's statistical results show that it can be used to calculate the capacity of PSHBs and PSRBs.

  • The resistance spot-welded region in most current finite element crash models is characterized as a rigid beam at the location of the welded spot. The region is modeled to fail with a failure criterion which is a function of the axial and shear load at the rigid beam. The calculation of the load acting on the rigid beam is important to evaluate the failure of the spot-weld. In this paper, numerical simulation is carried out to evaluate the calculation of the load at the rigid beam. At first, the load on the spot-welded region is calculated with the precise finite element model considering the residual stress due to the thermal history during the spot welding procedure. And then, the load is compared with the one obtained from the model used in the crash analysis with respect to the element size, the element shape and the number of imposed constraints. Analysis results demonstrate that the load acting on the spot-welded element is correctly calculated by the change of the element shape around the welded region and the location of welded constrains. The results provide a guideline for an accurate finite element modeling of the spot-welded region in the crash analysis of vehicles.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis of R/C hybrid deep T-beam with web opening subjected to pure torsion is presented. Hexahedral 8-nodes and space truss element were used for modeling concrete and reinforcement. The reinforcement was assumed perfectly bonded to the corresponding nodes of the concrete element. The constitutive relations for concrete and reinforcement are based on the modified field theory and elastic perfectly plastic. The smear crack approach was adopted for modeling the crack. The torque-twist angle relationship curve based on the finite element analysis was compared to the experimental results. The comparison shows that the curve of torque-twist angle predicted by the nonlinear finite element analysis is linear before cracking and close to the experimental result. After cracking, the curve becomes nonlinear and stiffer compared to the experimental result.

  • In the concrete structures, cracks occur in various causes and the cracks seriously affect the functions of structures. The analysis techniques of progressive crack in the concrete have been improved with the advance of numerical techniques. The discrete crack model used in finite element program for the analysis of progressive failure is very effective, but it can not be easily implemented into numerical procedures because of difficult handing of nodal points in finite element meshes for crack growth. This paper introduces one of the techniques which skips the difficulty. In this paper, the modeling of progressive failure using finite element formulation is explained for the analysis of concrete fracture. The discontinuous element using the discontinuous shape function and the dual mapping technique in the numerical integration are implemented into finite element code for this purpose. It is shown that developed finite element program can predict the quasi-brittle behavior of concrete including ultimate load. The comparisons of the analysis results with other data are also shown.
