  • Recently, a storage media is becoming smaller and storage capacity is also becoming larger than before. However, important data was leaked through a small storage media. To solve these serious problem, many security companies manufacture secure USBs with secure function, such as data encryption, user authentication, not copying data, and management system for secure USB, etc. But various attacks, such as extracting flash memory from USBs, password hacking or memory dump, and bypassing fingerprint authentication, have appeared. Therefore, security techniques related to secure USBs have to concern many threats for them. The basic components for a secure USB are secure authentication and data encryption techniques. Though existing secure USBs applied password based user authentication, it is necessary to develop more secure authentication because many threats have appeared. And encryption chipsets are used for data encryption however we also concern key managements. Therefore, this paper suggests mutual device authentication based on PUF (Physical Unclonable Function) between USBs and the authentication server and key management without storing the secret key. Moreover, secure USB is systematically managed with metadata and authentication information stored in authentication server.

  • Brainwave-based user authentication technology has advantages such as changeability, shoulder-surfing resistance, and etc. comparing with conventional biometric authentications, fingerprint recognition for instance which are widely used for smart phone and finance user authentication. Despite these advantages, brainwave-based authentication technology has not been used in practice because of the price for EEG (electroencephalography) collecting devices and inconvenience to use those devices. However, according to the development of simple and convenient EEG collecting devices which are portable and communicative by the recent advances in hardware technology, relevant researches have been actively performed. However, according to the experiment based on EEG samples collected by using a single-channel EEG measurement device which is the most simplified one, the authentication accuracy decreases as the number of channels to measure and collect EEG decreases. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze technical problems that need to be solved for practical use of brainwave-based use authentication and propose an incremental elimination method of collected EEG samples for each user to consist a set of EEG samples which are effective to authentication users.

  • In this paper, we propose a secure solution for user authentication by using fingerprint verification on the sensor-client-server model, even with the client that is not necessarily trusted by the sensor holder or the server. To protect possible attacks launched at the untrusted client, our solution makes the fingerprint sensor validate the result computed by the client for the feature extraction. However, the validation should be simple so that the resource-constrained fingerprint sensor can validate it in real-time. To solve this problem, we separate the feature extraction into binarization and minutiae extraction, and assign the time-consuming binarization to the client. After receiving the result of binarization from the client, the sensor conducts a simple validation to check the result, performs the minutiae extraction with the received binary image from the client, and then sends the extracted minutiae to the server. Based on the experimental results, the proposed solution for fingerprint verification can be performed on the sensor-client-server model securely and in real-time with the aid of an untrusted client.

  • Biometric based authentication can provide strong security guarantee about the identity of users. However, security of biometric data is particularly important as compromise of the data will be permanent. Cancelable biometrics stores a non - invertible transformed version of the biometric data. Thus, even if the storage is compromised, the biometric data remains safe. Cancelable biometrics also provide a higher level of privacy by allowing many templates for the same biometric data and hence non-linkability of user's data stored in different databases. In this paper, we proposed the fast polynomial reconstruction algorithm for fuzzy fingerprint vault. The proposed method needs (k+1) real points to reconstruct the polynomial of degree (k-1). It enhances the speed, however, by $300{\sim}1500$ times according to the degree of polynomial compared with the exhaust search.

  • As the security requirements of mobile phones have been increasing, there have been extensive researches using one biometric feature (e.g., an iris, a fingerprint, or a face image) for authentication. Due to the limitation of uni-modal biometrics, we propose a method that combines face and iris images in order to improve accuracy in mobile environments. This paper presents four advantages and contributions over previous research. First, in order to capture both face and iris image at fast speed and simultaneously, we use a built-in conventional mega pixel camera in mobile phone, which is revised to capture the NIR (Near-InfraRed) face and iris image. Second, in order to increase the authentication accuracy of face and iris, we propose a score level fusion method based on SVM (Support Vector Machine). Third, to reduce the classification complexities of SVM and intra-variation of face and iris data, we normalize the input face and iris data, respectively. For face, a NIR illuminator and NIR passing filter on camera are used to reduce the illumination variance caused by environmental visible lighting and the consequent saturated region in face by the NIR illuminator is normalized by low processing logarithmic algorithm considering mobile phone. For iris, image transform into polar coordinate and iris code shifting are used for obtaining robust identification accuracy irrespective of image capturing condition. Fourth, to increase the processing speed on mobile phone, we use integer based face and iris authentication algorithms. Experimental results were tested with face and iris images by mega-pixel camera of mobile phone. It showed that the authentication accuracy using SVM was better than those of uni-modal (face or iris), SUM, MAX, NIN and weighted SUM rules.

  • Biometric techniques for authentication using body parts such as a fingerprint, face, iris, voice, finger-vein and also photoplethysmography have become increasingly important in the personal security field, including door access control, finance security, electronic passport, and mobile device. Finger-vein images are now used to human identification, however, difficulties in recognizing finger-vein images are caused by capturing under various conditions, such as different temperatures and illumination, and noise in the acquisition camera. The human photoplethysmography is also important signal for human identification. In this paper To increase the recognition rate, we develop camera based identification method by combining finger vein image and photoplethysmography signal. We use a compact CMOS camera with a penetrating infrared LED light source to acquire images of finger vein and photoplethysmography signal. In addition, we suggest a simple pattern matching method to reduce the calculation time for embedded environments. The experimental results show that our simple system has good results in terms of speed and accuracy for personal identification compared to the result of only finger vein images.

  • In the modern electronic world, the authentication of a person is an important task in many areas of online-transactions. Using biometrics to authenticate a person's identity has several advantages over the present practices of Personal Identification Numbers(PINs) and passwords. To gain maximum security in the verification system using biometrics, the computation of the verification as well as the store of the biometric pattern has to be taken place in the security token(smart card, USB token). However, there is an open issue of integrating biometrics into the security token because of its limited resources(memory space, processing power). In this paper, we describe our implementation of the USB security token system having 206MHz StrongARM CPU, 16MBytes flash memory, and 1MBytes RAM. Also, we evaluate the performance of a light-weighted In-gerprint verification algorithm that can be executed in the restricted environments. Based on experimental results, we confirmed that the RAM requirement of the proposed algorithm was about 6.8 KBytes and the Equal Error Rate(EER) was 1.7%.

  • In the public certificate technology commonly used in Korea, users have a cumbersome problem of always resetting when they forget their password. In this paper, as a solution to this problem, we propose a secure authentication certificate password recovery protocol using blockchain, PKI, and DID for distributed storage. DID is a schema for protecting block ID in blockchain system. The private key used in the PKI is configured as a user's biometric, for example, a fingerprint, so that it can completely replace the memory of the complex private key. To this end, based on the FIDO authentication technology that most users currently use on their smartphones, the process of authenticating a user to access data inside the block minimizes the risk of an attacker taking over the data.
