  • The prolonged mechanical grinding process may enhance the bioavailability of the drugs due to the change of solid state such as micronization and decrease of crystallinity. A series of attempts to enhance the bioavailability of insoluble drugs have been made by the fine grinding technique using a planetary mill. The objective of the present study is to investigate the possibility of improving the dissolution properties of poorly water- soluble drugs such as diphenyl hydrantoin (phenytoin) and diphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB) based on the molecular interaction between drug and additives during pharmaceutical processing to be related with the bioavailability behavior. • This study aims to reduce CO2 generated during the manufacturing process by using limestone (CaCO3), a carbonate mineral used in the production of cement clinker, as a decarbonated raw material that does not contain CO2. Among various industrial by-products, we attempted to use cement paste attached to waste concrete. In general, limestone for cement must have a CaCO3 content of at least 80% (CaO, 44% or more) to ensure the quality of cement clinker. However, the CaO content of waste concrete fine powder is about 20% on average, so in order to use it as a cement clinker raw material, the CaO content must be increased to more than 35%. Therefore, by using the difference in hardness of the mineral composition of waste concrete fine powder to selectively crush CaO type minerals with relatively low hardness, classify and sieve, the CaO content can be increased by more than 35%. Accordingly, in this study, we experimentally and statistically reviewed and analyzed the optimal conditions for efficiently separating CaO and SiO2 and other components by selectively pulverizing minerals containing relatively low CaO through a grinding process. As a result of the optimal grinding conditions experiment, it was found that the optimal conditions were a grinding time of less than 5 minutes, a type of material to be crushed of 30 mm, and an amount of material to be crushed of 1.0 or more. However, it is judged that it is necessary to review pulverized materials of mixed particle sizes rather than pulverized products of single particle size.

  • Existing long range piezoelectric motors with friction based transmission mechanisms are limited by the axial load capacity. To overcome this problem, a new linear piezoelectric motor using one piezoelectric actuator combined with a novel stepping mechanism is reported in this paper. To obtain both long range and fine accuracy, dual positioning control strategy consisting of coarse positioning and fine positioning is used. Coarse positioning is used for long travel range by accumulating motion steps obtained by piezoelectric actuator. This is followed by fine positioning where required accuracy is obtained by fine motion displacement of piezoelectric actuator. This prototype is able to provide resolution of 20 nanometers and withstand a maximum axial load of 300N. At maximum load condition, the positioner can move forward to a travel distance of 5mm at a maximum speed of 0.4 mm/sec. This design of nanopositioner can be used in applications for ultra precision positioning and grinding operations where high axial force capacity is required.

  • The physicochemical properties of rice flour produced by 3 different grinding methods using various steeping times (3, 6, 9, and 12 hrs) were investigated. Roller mill gave coarse rice flour; the pin mill, intermediate flour; and mixed when both (roller & pin mills) were used. With the increase of steeping times, the rice flours became finer and the contents of crude protein, crude fat and crude ash decreased. Damaged starch was noticeably high in rice flour by roller & pin mills compared to those by roller or pin mills alone. Amylose contents, solubility and swelling power increased as the steeping times increased. Water binding capacity was the highest in roller & pin mills, followed by pin mill. In scanning electron microscope (SEM), pin mill showed distribution of separated fine particles of rice flours. The physicochemical properties of rice flours showed many differences by steeping times of rice and grinding methods. With sufficient steeping times, the rice flours obtained from pin mill were relatively fine having less damaged starch.

  • Bioactive components of ultra-fine ground Saururus, the extraction yield increases when the leaves are ultra-fine ground. Comparison of normal-ground and ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis leaves showed that the solid content and antiinflammatory activity of ultra-fine ground extracts was higher than that of normal-ground extracts. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells were treated with different concentrations of Saururus chinensis extract and the amount of nitric oxide (NO) was determined; LPS-treated cells produced 2 times more NO than cells that were not treated with LPS. Moreover, the NO production in cells treated with Saururus chinensis extract was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. Because the stimulant-induced NO production is regulated by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), we measured the iNOS protein level to elucidate the mechanism by which the NO production was inhibited. We found that the amount of iNOS decreased dose-dependently. It was reduced by 53% at a Saururus chinensis extract concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. The protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells was inhibited by 31% at $100{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract. Gel shift of the nuclear factor kappa B-DNA complex occurred in LPS-treated cells and the intensity of the band decreased gradually in a concentration-dependent manner. Ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis extract had a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on the production of prostaglandin $E_2$, tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$, interleukin $1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), IL-6, and IL-8 in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells, i.e., at $50{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract, their levels were decreased by 53, 67, 52, 37, and 21% respectively.

  • This study has been carried out to sinter silicon nitride with additives and to show the effect of surface finishments on its strength and Weibull modulus which are two most important factors for its applications into structural ceramics. Silicon nitride was sintered with the additions of $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ under pressureless cond-ition. The optimum properties were obtained by sintering at 1, 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs under $N_2$ atmosphere and the strength showed 6, 500kg/$cm^2$ at room temperature and 3, 300kg/$cm^2$ at 120$0^{\circ}C$. The effects of surface treatment on the strength of sintered $Si_3N_4$ were studied and the results showed that fine surface treatment increased the strength by up to 50% The Weibull analysis showed that its modulus was increased with increasing fineness of surface finishments. It was concluded that the mechanical properties of sintered silicon nitride could be improved by fine surface grinding which implied the brittle-fracture nature of sintered silicon nitride.

  • Die making process is classified into design, manufacturing, polishing, assembly, and performance test. Die polishing is not a machining process by cutting edge of tool, but it is finishing by relative cutting movement under the surface contact between grinding particles and workpiece, and this process comprised 30~40% of total manufacturing hours. However, die polishing process is still performed by the skilled workers. Now a days, it is very difficult to secure skilled workers due to the hardworking environment and this situation will be getting worse in the future which has great difficulty of dies and molds industries. This process has the common problem on the elimination of tedious manual polishing among the tool making industries. Therefore this study is aimed at the development of an automatic polishing attachment which could be attached onthe spindle of CNC machine tool and controlled by the NC program data created by CAD/CAM system. As a result, this study will contribute the realization of automatic fine polishing process and improvement of quality level of dies and molds.

  • The production process of a fine size fraction of Korean kaolin by ball milling is studied in this paper by analyzing the size distribution the size distribution of products with the Rosin-rammle formular and the rate process of cumulative size fractions with Alyavdin-Chujyo's formular. The size distribution is found to be divided in three regions a coarser part influenced by feed size an intermediate part where the size distribution shows a clear straight line relationship on Rosin-Rammler chart and the finest part with the ultimate limit of fineness by ball milling. Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship is found to be valid over a very wide range of milling conditions. For different feed sizes the Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship gives a group of straight lines with a common intersection point which can be defined as the limiting point of the persistent component region.

  • In this study, mortar strength was measured by grinding oyster shell and changing the particle size distribution. For the experiment, the oyster shells were processed to a fine aggregate size of 10mm or less. In this experiment, seven particle size distribution conditions were selected and tested. Because oyster shells are different in density from sand, their volume ratios were calculated and converted to mass ratios of 1: 3. The strength test was carried out one day after the steam curing.
