  • A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O2combustion region of the real plant.

  • There is a large interest to find reliable and automatic methods for crack detection and quantification in the railway bogie frame. The non-destructive inspection of railway bogie frame has been performed by ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing in general inspection. The magnetic particle method has been utilized in the defect inspection of the bogie frame but the grinding process is required before inspection and the dust is developed resulting from the processing. The objective of this paper is to apply the inspection method of bogie frame using infra-red thermography. The infra-red thermography system using the excitation of eddy current was performed for the defect evaluation of weld specimen inserted artificial defects. The result shows that the infra-red thermography method can detect the surface and inner defects in weld specimen for bogie frame.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this case study is to assess the current airflow and find the ideal ventilation conditions in tank reactors for minimizing the possibility of exposure respiratory dusts(size of 2.5μm, 10μm) when workers exchange catalysts in the tank reactors. Methods: A Numerical study was performed to determine ideal ventilation conditions, We considered two sizes of airborne respiratory particles(2.5μm, 10μm) at 12points from the bottom of tank reactor. We changed input & output ventilation conditions and analyzed the particle motion in the tank reactor. The star-ccm+, computational fluid dynamics tool was used to predict air & particle flow patterns in the tank reactor and a numerical simulation was achieved by applying the realized κε turbulence model and the Lagrangian particle tracking method. Results: From the results, the increase of recirculation air had a significant impact on removing dusts because they are removed by HEPA filter. To the contrary, Increasing the clean air quantity or changing the input position of clean air is not good for workers because it causes the exit of respiratory dusts through workers' entrance or cause it to remail suspended in the air in the workplace tank.

  • Using high-resolution numerical simulations, we investigate the formation of gaseous substructures and mass inflow rates in barred spiral galaxies in the presence of both bar and spiral potentials. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally-thin, isothermal, unmagnetized, and non-self-gravitating. To consider various galactic situations, we vary the pattern speed and strength of spiral arms as well as the black hole mass. We find that spiral arms with pattern speed smaller than that of the bar remove angular momentum from the gas outside corotation which transports to the bar region, making the dust lanes strong and live long. When the arm pattern speed is identical to that of the bar, on the other hand, the gas outside corotation gains angular momentum and thus moves outward, without affecting the bar region. Overall gaseous morphologies in simulations match well with observed IR images of barred spiral galaxies such as NGC 1097, when the arms and bar are in phase at the corotation radius. The presence of spiral arms increases the mass inflow rate as well, making it larger than 0.01M/yr when MBH is 4×107M, possibly explaining AGN activities in Seyfert galaxies.

  • The rectifier for Electric railway is one of the most important facilities in DC urban railway which converts power from KEPCO(AC 22.9kV) to the electric mil car(DC 1.5kV), therefore it should be managed as the best condition for the drive. There are several things to cause performance degradation and deterioration of parts such as pollutants occurred by it established under the ground such as dust or foreign substances, rapid changes of driving current, and pyrogen which put the rectifier for Electric railway in malfunction. On the flow of time, the rectifier for Electric railway is causing a malfunction or failure which drive electric rail car in operations as well as loss of life. In this research we try to find the way of removing the various components of mal-functions in the performance of the rectifier for Electric railway by Over-Haul and reform itself, which gives us to get the chance investment of the reduction, the reliability of power supply to the electric rail car.

  • We use grid-based hydrodynamic simulations to study star formation in nuclear rings in barred galaxies. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally thin, isothermal, and unmagnetized. To investigate various situations, we vary the total gas content in the bar regions and the bar growth time. We find that star formation rate (SFR) in a nuclear ring is determined by the mass inflow rate to the ring rather than the total gas mass in the ring. The SFR shows a strong primary burst and weak secondary bursts at early time, and declines to small values at late time. The primary burst is caused by the rapid gas infall to the ring due to the bar growth, with its duration and peak depending on the bar growth time. The secondary bursts result from re-infall of the ejected gas by star formation feedback of the primary burst. When the SFR is low, ages of young star clusters exhibit an azimuthal gradient along the ring since star formation takes place mostly near the contact points between the dust lanes and the nuclear ring. When the SFR is large, on the other hand, star formation is widely distributed throughout the whole length of the ring, with no apparent age gradient of star clusters. Regardless of SFR, star clusters have a positive radial age gradient, with younger clusters located closer to the ring, since the ring shrinks in size over time.

  • We carried out CO survey toward IR-excess clouds using SRAO 6-m telescope in search of molecular H2. These clouds, which show far-infrared excess over what is expected from HI column density, are considered to be candidates of molecular clouds. In order to find new high Galactic latitude clouds, we made mapping observations for 14 IR-excess clouds selected from Reach et al.(1998) in 12CO J = 1 - 0 line, supplementing the similar survey in southern hemisphere (Onishi et al. 2001). 12CO emission is detected from three IR-excess clouds among 14 objects. Three newly detected clouds exhibit somewhat clumpy morphology and column densities amount to 1021cm2. One of three clouds, DIR120-28, show discrepancy between IR-excess center and CO emission center. It seems that IR-excess may not be an effective tracer of molecular gas. Instead, optical depth(τ) excess, i.e., IR-excess corrected for temperature dependence, may be more effective tracer of molecular clouds, since, by combining statistics from both hemispheres, we found that the detection rate is higher for IR-excess clouds with lower dust temperature.

  • The eccentricity of the rotor causes a rotary machine to unbalance and the balancing to correct or compensate this is very important not only for dust-proof and anti -noise design but also for stabilization and durability of the rotary machine. In this paper, for developing the balancing machine to find and compensate such eccentricity, we will propose new way of measuring eccentricity using hall effect sensor that is different from the way in a conventional balancing machine. And we will show that it is possible to make balancing machine more compactly and cheaply by experiment results using hall effect sensor to measure eccentricity. Moreover we try to control and monitor the balancing machine by personal computer through serial communication.

  • The objective of this study was to identify the sources and to estimate the source contributions to the atmospheric TSP(total suspended particulate matter) and PM-10(particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 10μm) concentration in Taegu area. A total of 84 samples was collected during the January to December 1999. TSP and PM-10 were collected on filters by portable air sampler, and heavy metals in TSP and PM-배 were analyzed by ICO(Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometery) after preliminary treatment. The results were follow as : First, annual average of TSP and PM-10 concentration was 123 and 69μg/㎥ respectively. The concentration of TSP and PM-10 were highest in winter season compared to other seasons. Second, the concentration of Al, Fe, Mn were higher in TSP than in PM-10, indicating that these heavy metals are generally associate with natural contributions. Third, metal combinations showed that a high correlation among concentrations of heavy metals were follows: As Al, Fe and Mn in TSP ; Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb in PM-10. Finally, Statistical analysis was performed using Principal Components Analysis(PCA) in order to find possible sources of the pollutants. The factor analysis was permitted to identify four major sources(soil/road dust resuspension, waste incineration, furl combustion, vehicular emission) in each fraction. These source accounted for at least 83, 85% of variance of TSP and PM-10 concentration in Taegu area.
