  • I estimate stock prices of listed companies using financial information and Ohlson model, which is used for the evaluation of company value. Furthermore, I use the artificial neural network, one of artificial intelligence systems, which are not based on linear relationship between variables, to estimate stock prices of listed companies. By reapplying this in estimating stock prices of newly listed companies, I evaluate the appropriateness in stock valuation with such methods. The result of practical analysis of this study is as follows. On the top of that, the multiplier for the actual stock price is accounted by generating the estimated stock prices based on the artificial neural network model. As a result of the comparison of two multipliers, the estimated stock prices by the artificial neural network model does not show statistically difference with the actual stock prices. Given that, the estimated stock price with artificial neural network is close to the actual stock prices rather than the estimated stock prices with Ohlson model.

  • This study reports a preliminary finding of the types and numbers of graphs being presented in the annual reports of about thirty top listed companies trading publicly in the stock markets of three countries-Thailand (SET), Malaysia (BM), and Singapore (SGX)-that were chosen based on their inclusion in the ASEAN Stars Index under the ASEAN Trading Link project. A total of 6,753 graphs from nineteen sectors were extracted and examined. Banking, real estate, and telecommunications are ranked the three most condense sectors, accounting for 50.2% of the total number of graphs observed. The three most used graphs are the Conservative Bar, Donut graph and Stack Bar. Less than one percent of Infographic type graphs were used. The five most depicted graphed variables are Asset, Revenue, Net profit, Liability, and Dividend. Using rudimentary framework to detect distorted or misleading statistical graphs, the study found 60.6% of the graphs distorted across the three markets, SET, BM, and SGX. BM ranked first in percentages of graphs being distortedly presented (73%). The other two markets, SET and SGX, have about the same proportions, 53.88% and 53.03%, respectively. Likewise, the proportions of Well-designed versus Inappropriate-designed graphs of the latter two markets are a little over one time (SET = 1 : 1.17; SGX = 1 : 1.13), whereas the proportion is almost triple for the BM market (BM = 1 : 2.70). In addition, the trend of distorted graphs found is slightly increasing as the longevity of the ASEAN Stars Index increases. One possible explanation for the relatively equal proportion of inappropriate graphs found is that SET is the smallest market and SGX, though the largest, is the most regulated market. BM, on the other hand, may want to present their financial data in the most attractive manner to prospective investors, thus, regulatory constraints and governance structure are still lenient.

  • The objectives of not-for-profit organizations including government supported research institutes are, by definition, to achieve socially desired nonfinancial goals. Current reporting focuses on providing information to meet the needs of users. This information may be provided in the annual research report, financial report, and other reports. An objective of current reporting is to provide users with information that will assist them in evaluating the performance(efficiency and effectiveness) of reporting entity. The evaluation of R&D project's performance requires information not only about the acquition and use of resources, but also about the outputs and outcomes of R&D activities, This study aims to recommend that R&D Service Efforts and Accomplish- mints(SEA) reporting is useful for performance evaluation in national R&D programmes. To achieve this aims, I attempt to develop the R&D SEA measures with reference to the Concepts Statement No. 2 of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. R&D SEA measures consist of five categories : (1) input measures, (2) outcome measures, (3) output measures, (4) re1a1e efforts to accomplishments, (5) explanatory information.

  • Service industries nowadays have become the subject of a scientific research. However, unlike research on manufacturing, there has not yet been a broader presentation of important aspects theoretically and methodologically. The importance of service sector in both national and global economies has grown significantly. An active participation of service industries in the internationalization process, notably by licensing and FDI, has occurred over time. But a few sub-sectors still dominate on this process, for example, financial institutions such as banks, securities, and insurance as well as producer services in advertising and accounting. On the other hand, personal services that are owned by small- and medium- sized firm have limited capabilities in their transnational transfer. This paper attempts to examine various factors influencing decisions for these small- and medium- sized Korean beauty firms in entering to the foreign markets. Determining factors for these firms in the engagement of internationalization depends largely on competitive advantages in both domestic and host countries, and they may be different from those in the sub-sectors mentioned above. Based on previous researches, i identified three categories of independent variables(characteristics of firms, managers, and competition) that can influence decisions to enter to the foreign markets. Seven hypotheses have been tested by using a sample of beauty firms in Daegu city and Kyungbuk province. The results show that the intention of these firms to enter to the foreign markets is significantly influenced by the factors of the innovative character of CEO's, the competitiveness of firms, and size of firms.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility for Korean entertainment companies to enter into debt financing. In particular, this study focuses on the possibility of issuing corporate bond and the asset backed securities (ABS) by two leading entertainment companies in Korea: SM Entertainment (SM) and YG Entertainment (YG). Depth interview with specialists such as investment bankers (IB), bond brokers, and financial directors and executives in entertainment companies was done. The results show that IB's opinion on issuing corporate bonds by SM and YG is positive. However, they may need to meet four requirements including maintaining stable cash-flow, diversifying sales source, enhancing accounting and legal transparencies and verifying managerial capabilities. In addition, Psy' s 'Gangnam style', his global hit song, turns out to have high potential as a base asset for ABS.

  • Purpose - This paper examines the explanatory power of the agency theory in the determination of cash holdings for Korean retail firms. If the agency theory holds, a firm with strong corporate governance structure tends to have low cash holdings. A strong governance structure makes the CEO of this firm to behave in the interests of shareholders and thus the CEO has low incentive to stockpile cash holdings, which can be easily diverted for the CEO's own managerial purposes. We investigate this relationship between corporate governance structure and cash holdings, by using corporate governance scores as a proxy variable that captures the effectiveness of corporate governance mechanism. Research design, data, and methodology - We adopt the sample of publicly listed retail firms in KOSPI market from 2005 to 2013. Financial and accounting statements are gathered from the WISEfn database. We also use the corporate governance scores published by Korean Corporate Governance Service. The relationship between the corporate governance scores and cash holdings is cross-sectionally estimated based on the ordinary least square method. This estimation method is widely accepted in the existing literature. The sample of large conglomerates, Chebol, and the remainder firms are separately examined as well, to account for the distinctive internal financing environment in these large conglomerates. Results - We mainly contribute to the extant literature by providing empirical evidence against the agency theory of cash policy. Unlike the prediction of agency theory, we confirm statistically insignificant or even positive correlations between the set of corporate governance scores and cash-asset ratios. Almost all the major corporate governance attributes including total score, shareholder rights, board structure, and the quality of information disclosure do not show negative correlations with cash holdings, which poses a strong challenge to the validity of the agency theory in the determination of retail firms' cash holdings. Conclusions - This study presents interesting empirical results with respect to the cash policy in Korean retail firms. Consistent to prior studies, I verify that the agency theory only limitedly explains the level of cash holdings. Future studies may obtain more robust results by examining a longer sample period.

  • In this study, we examined the effects of guardians' service quality perception(G-SQP) on patients' service quality perception(P-SQP) leading to patients' behavioral intention(P-BI) and the effects of G-SQP on guardians' behavioral intention(G-BI). To investigate the causalities of the variables, we collected national wide samples of 144 hospitals, 1456 patients and 1455 guardians of the patients and analyzed 1146 guardian-patient coupled cases refined with prerequisites such as missing value, outliers, normality and covariance conditions. Followed were contributions of the present study. First, G-SQP was a predictor of P-SQP. Second, in the first contribution statement, there was no statistically significant difference between inpatient and outpatient group. Third, proven was that G-SQP was a predictor of G-BI. Fourth, verified was that P-SQP was a predictor of P-BI. Fifth, G-SQP was a predictor of P-SQP being led to P-BI that meant P-SQP had a mediating role between G-SQP and P-BI. Since the guardians' perception affected patients' buying decision, the present study implied service managers of hospital settings should pay attention to guardians' perception of service quality as well as patients'. With such strategy, hospitals could improve financial performance in long-term.
