Most laboratory test research has focused on grouting efficiency in homogeneous reconstituted soft clay. However, the natural sedimentary soils generally behave differently from reconstituted soils due to the effect of soil structure. A series of laboratory grouting tests were conducted to research the effect of soil structure on the performance of compensation grouting. The effects of grouting volume, overlying load and grouting location on the performance of compensation grouting under different soil structures were also studied. Reconstituted soil was altered with added cement to simulate artificial structured soil. The results showed that the final grouting efficiency was positive and significantly increased with the increase of stress ratio within a certain range when grouting in normally consolidated structured clay. However, in the same low yield stress situation, the artificial structured soil had a lower final grouting efficiency than the overconsolidated reconstituted soil. The larger of normalized grouting volume could increase the final grouting efficiency for both reconstituted and artificial structured soils. Whereas, the effect of the overlying load on final grouting efficiencies was unfavourable, and was independent of the stress ratio. As for the layered soil specimens, grouting in the artificial structured soil layer was the most efficient. In addition, the peak grouting pressure was affected by the stress ratio and the overlying load, and it could be predicted with an empirical equation when the overlying load was less than the yield stress. The end time of primary consolidation and the proportion of secondary consolidation settlement varied with the different soil structures, grouting volumes, overlying loads and grouting locations.
The major reason to employ electrokinetic geosynthetics is to take advantage of its ability to densify very low permeability materials in shorter time periods than ordinary seepage consolidation. A number of laboratory scale experiments was carried out with acrylic column using natural clayey soil. The testing results indicate that (1) the electrically induced settlement was faster than the gravitational one, (2) the higher the voltage, the faster the dewatering but the less final settlement, and (3) the pH extended as low as 3 in the anode section and as high as 11 near the cathode.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce case studies on 2 projects for the construction of port facilities in Colombo, Sri lanka. In Queen Elizabeth quay development project in 2000, the damage at the bottom of steel tubular piles were occurred when piles were driven into subsoil for piled wharf structure in Stage 1. In order to prevent same incident in Stage 2 & 3, the pile driveability analysis were executed by dynamic formulas, analysis program, test driving and pile load tests. Through pile driveability analysis, prevention plans were proposed. In Colombo port expansion project in 2008, the mv method was applied to predict a primary consolidation settlement of a subsoil under a breakwater in the calculation stage. The $m_v$ was estimated from results of cone penetration tests and the final settlement by consolidation was calculated with it.

In order to construct extremely large scale of sea dike like Saemanguem dike, extremely large amount of mass of rock are needed. In this case, it is general methods to estimate required amount of rock mass based on characteristics of consolidation settlement and bearing capacity of seabed, because it is impossible to estimate exact amount of rock material based on varied seabed condition.. Even in this general methods, it is very few case to manage rock mass amount by estimation of actual input rock mass but the main point is focused on the final section formation considering of designed section and reserve embankment, so excessive or underestimating result of rock mass would be occurred surely. This general methods is not resonable in the points of economic and stable. In this study, optimum construction management method of rubble mound in the 3rd section construction of Saemanguem sea dike is suggested based on comparing required rock mass estimating from consolidation settlement theory with actual input rock mass. It is found out that the optimum input quantity of rock mass is about $1,900{\sim}2,000m^3$/day.

The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral points and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the piles capacities.
An experimental study on step up filling method is carried out to reinforce the Yano method which is widely used to estimate volume ratio and self-weight consolidation settlement in reclamation area. This method considers actual reclamation construction in which dredged clay is continuously filled and rising of deposit height is presented as a result of volume decrease by height rising and self-weight consolidation. It measured the relationship between filling velocity and deposit rising velocity; calculated the total filling height which is needed to achieve the planned final deposit height, and its solid height and the time which is taken to finish the planned final deposit height; and on the basis of these calculated parameters, predicted the self-weight consolidation and volume change ratio in reclamation construction. Yano method is also used to predict the same conditions. 29.8% in self-weight consolidation, 31.1% in volume ratio, 40% in void ratio and water content is underestimated in Yano method compared to step up filling method.

In this study, the in-situ model test has been conducted and used to estimate and analyze consolidation behavior of the ground by using the miniature test that reconstructs economically geotechnical behavior of in-situ full scale structure. To analogize the relation among effective stress, void ratio and coefficient of permeability at the self-weight consolidation stage, the low stress seepage consolidation test has been conducted and the involution function of constitutive equation had been obtained from the result of the curve fitted seepage consolidation test result. As a result of the numerical analysis that had been conducted on the representative section using a constitute equation, final settlement was similar with those of self-weight consolidation of the centrifugal model test. But, it was more or less smaller. It seems that these trends are caused by the difference between estimated values.
Despite a number of studies on consolidation behavior that have been carried out in the Nakdong River estuary in Busan, these are focused on the prediction of final settlement during ground improvement process, and there is almost no research on the long-term settlement occurring after that. For the practical study on the long-term settlement, the field monitored settlement data that measured over 10 years in the Busan new port facilities area were used, and the final settlement and predicted time-settlement line were constituted by hyperbolic function. As a result, the measured settlements depend on the thickness of clayey soils, and the pattern were similar to each other and good agreement with the predicted time-settlement line using hyperbolic method. Also, the settlement in the lower non-improved layer occupied 62-76% of total settlement. Information about above results would be quite helpful to understand the long-term settlement behaviors as well as the non-improved layer's settlement is more careful consideration needed at design phase.

This paper introduced an alternative method called USCP (Unpenetrated Sand Compaction Pile). In USCP, the toe of the sand pile does not reach to the lower supporting layer. Hence it is possible to reduce the amount of sand required. However, the degree of improvement could not be the same as SCP. Effective soil improvement, nevertheless, might be possible by combining both methods. In this paper, an improved method that cross over both SCP and USCP was discussed. And in order to verify applicability to a clay layer, consolidation behaviors with different conditions were analyzed and compared using FEM(Finite Element Method) based on the elasto-viscosity theory. From the results, it is concluded for the characteristic of settlement of USCP that the lower degree of replacement and the smaller ratio of penetration($H_d/H$), the larger is the settlement of the lower part of the clay layer comparing to the layer with no improvement. It is also concluded that the ratios of allotment of stress (m) calculated from the final settlements with 30% of degree of replacement are $1.8{\sim}3.3$ for $H_d/H=lOO%,\;1.8{\sim}4.0\;for\;H_d/H=75%,\;and\;1.8{\sim}3.8\;for\;H_d/H=50%$. Besides, the ratio of allotment of stress decreased as the degree of replacement decreased.

Settlement of the piled raft can be estimated even after years of completing the construction of any structure over the foundation. This study is devoted to carry out numerical analysis by the finite element method of the consolidation settlement of piled rafts over clayey soils and detecting the dissipation of excess pore water pressure and its effect on bearing capacity of piled raft foundations. The ABAQUS computer program is used as a finite element tool and the soil is represented by the modified Drucker-Prager/cap model. Five different configurations of pile groups are simulated in the finite element analysis. It was found that the settlement beneath the piled raft foundation resulted from the dissipation of excess pore water pressure considerably affects the final settlement of the foundation, and enough attention should be paid to settlement variation with time. The settlement behavior of unpiled raft shows bowl shaped settlement profile with maximum at the center. The degree of curvature of the raft under vertical load increases with the decrease of the raft thickness. For the same vertical load, the differential settlement of raft of ($10{\times}10m$) size decreases by more than 90% when the raft thickness increased from 0.75 m to 1.5 m. The average load carried by piles depends on the number of piles in the group. The groups of ($2{\times}1$, $3{\times}1$, $2{\times}2$, $3{\times}2$, and $3{\times}3$) piles were found to carry about 24%, 32%, 42%, 58%, and 79% of the total vertical load. The distribution of load between piles becomes more uniform with the increase of raft thickness.
