In this study, a three-dimensional gravity casting problem has been examined to investigate a coupled phenomenon of the filling and solidification process. This work simultaneously considers the two key phenomena of metal casting : the fluid flow during mold filling, and solidification process. The VOF method is used to analyze the free surface flow during filling and the equivalent specific heat method is employed to model the latent heat release during solidification. The time-implicit filling algorithm is applied to save the computational time for analyzing the mold filling process. The three-dimensional benchmark problem used in the MCWASP VII has been solved using both the implicit and explicit algorithm, and the present results are compared with the benchmark experimental results and the other numerical results.
Micro molding technology is a promising mass production technology for polymer based microstructures. Mass production technologies such as the micro injection/compression molding, hot embossing, and micro reaction molding are already in use. In the present study, we have developed a numerical analysis system to simulate three-dimensional non-isothermal cavity filling for hot embossing, with a special emphasis on the free surface capturing. Precise free surface capturing has been successfully accomplished with the level set method, which is solved by means of the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method. The RKDG method turns out to be excellent from the viewpoint of both numerical stability and accuracy of volume conservation. The Stokes equations are solved by the stabilized finite element method using the equal order tri-linear interpolation function. To prevent possible numerical oscillation in temperature Held we employ the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method. With the developed code we investigated the detailed change of free surface shape in time during the mold filling. In the filling simulation of a simple rectangular cavity with repeating protruded parts, we find out that filling patterns are significantly influenced by the geometric characteristics such as the thickness of base plate and the aspect ratio and pitch of repeating microstructures. The numerical analysis system enables us to understand the basic flow and material deformation taking place during the cavity filling stage in microstructure fabrications.
An algorithm for modeling the filling of metal into a mold and solidification has been developed. This algorithm uses the implicit VOF method for a filling and a general implicit source-based method for solidification. The model for simultaneous filling and solidification is applied to the two-dimensional filling and solidification of a square cavity. The effects of the wall temperature and gate position on the solidification are examined. The mixed natural convection flow and residual flow resulting from the completion of a filling are included in this study to investigate the coupled effects of the filling and natural convection on solidification. Two different filling configurations (assisting flow and opposite flow due to the gate position) are analysed to study the effects of residual flow on solidification. The results clearly show the necessity to carry out a coupled filling and solidification analysis including the effect of natural convection.

In order to compare the accessory canal filling effects of the three root canal filling methods with gutta-percha, the author fabricated artificial root canal mold with the first and second accessory canals of chrome-cobalt alloy. After the artificial root canal was filled with gutta-percha by lateral condensation, vertical condensation and low-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha injection-molded method, twenty five times respectively, the gutta-percha forced into the first and second accessory canals were measured with caliper for length. The results were as follows: 1. The filling in both accessory canals was most effective in low-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha injection-melded method followed in such order as: vertical condensation method and lateral condensation method (p < 0.01). 2. The filling effect of the second accessory canal was more or less higher than that of the first one (p < 0.05). 3. Low-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha injection-molded method was fastest in time needed for root canal filling followed by lateral condensation method and vertical condensation method.
The mold filling process has been a central issue in the development of numerical methods to solve the casting processes. A mold filling which is inherently transient free surface fluid flow, is important because the quality of casting highly depends on such phenomenon, Most of the existing numerical schemes to solve mold filling process have severe limitations in time step restrictions or Courant criteria since explicit time integration is used. Therefore, a large computation time is required to analyze casting processes. In this study, the well known SOLA-VOF method has been modified implicitly to simulate the mold filling process. Solutions to example filling problems show that the proposed method is more efficient in computation time than the original SOLA -VOF method.
Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology is the shortest interconnection technology which is compared with conventional wire bonding interconnection technology. Recently, this technology has been also noticed for the miniaturization of electronic devices, multi-functional and high performance. The short interconnection length of TSV achieve can implement a high density and power efficiency. Among the TSV technology, TSV filling process is important technology because the cost of TSV technology is depended on the filling process time and reliability. Various filling methods have been developed like as Cu electroplating method, molten solder insert method and Ti/W deposition method. In this paper, various TSV filling methods were introduced and each filling materials were discussed.
Finite element analysis tool was developed to analyze the casting process. Generally, casting processes consists of mold filling and solifification. In order to investigate the effects of process variables and to predict the defects, both filling and solidiffication process were simulated simultaneously. At filling process, especiallywe consider thermal coupling to investigate thermal history of material during the filling stage. And thermal condition at the final stage of filling is used as the initial conditions in a solidification process for the exact simulation of the actual casting processes. At mold filling process, Lagrangian-type finite element method with automatic remashing scheme was used to find the material flow. To avoid numerical instability in low viscous fluid, a perturbation method with artificial viscosity is adopted. At solififfication process, enthalpy-based finite element method was used to solve the heat transfer problem with phase change. And elastic stress analysis has been performed to predict the thermal residual stress. Through the FE analysis, solidiffication time, position of solidus line, liquidus line and thermal residual stress are studied. Finite element tools developed in this study will be used process design of casting process and maybe basic structure for total CAE system of castigs which will be constructed afterward.
