A Study on Fatigue Design for Welded Joint of STS301L (STS301L 용접종류별 이음재의 피로설계에 관한 연구)

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet and plug type joint, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of gas welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the maximum stress at the edge of fillet welded joint.

  • In this study, it was investigated about endurance limit and fatigue behavior of load carrying fillet welded cruciform joints according to welding methods of SMAW, SAW, MIG and FCAW commonly using for welding structures in present. Endurance limit carried omit highly in the order of SMAW, MIG, SAW, FCAW and fatigue crack propagation ratio carried out lowly in the order of SMAW, MIG, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW or MIG welding methods for welding structures with small welding capacity and SAW or FCAW methods for large welding structures after due consideration about economic gains and operation efficiency of welding. Fatigue crack propagation ratio is more effected by strength of welding materials than endurance limit of welding materials according to welding methods.

  • In this study, endurance limit and fatigue behavior of load carrying fillet welded cruciform joints depending on commonly used welding methods such as SMAW, SAW, MIG and FCAW are investigated. In respect of endurance limit SMAW specimen showes highest result, and then MIG, SAW, FCAW in descending order. However, SMAW specimen showes lowest crack growth rate and it followed by MIG, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW or MIG welding methods for welding structures with small welding capacity and SAW or FCAW methods for large welding structures with respect to economic benefits and operation efficiency of welding. It was also shown fatigue crack growth rate was more influenced by the strenght of welding materials than the endurance limit of welding materials.

  • In this study, Non-load-carrying EH Grade steels in fillet welded joints were evaluated with both the hot spot stress method and the 1mm stress method. The thickness effect criterion for fatigue strength evaluation of welded of welded steel structures recommendations of the IIW was used to evaluate the fatigue strength of EH40 and EH36 and Both EH40 and EH36 have been compared with FAT 125 curve recommended in the IIW. Furthermore, fatigue strength of the welded tow and the ground conditions for Non-load-carrying EH36 based on the 1mm stress method has been discussed.

  • The mode of fatigue failure is depended on the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiated and propagated from the weld toe and the weld root in the load-carrying fillet welded joints. The characteristics of fatigue crack are deeply affected by the geometry of fillet and the stress range. The purpose of this study is to investigate critical weld size and stress range in order to occur toe failure under pulsating tension loading in the load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints.

Effects of Plate Thickness and Weld Size on the Strength of Fillet Welded Lap Joints (모재의 두께와 용접치수에 따른 필릿용접부의 강도)

  • Specimens with fillet-welded lap joints were fabricated from 20 mm, 60 mm, and 82 mm thick steel plates produced by Thermo Mechanical Control Process. The designed sizes of filet welds were betwen 6 mm and 16 m. The welds' axes were parallel with or perpendicular to the direction of loading or a combination of them. Specimens were axialy loaded in tension and the strength of fillet-welded joints were measured. Test results showed that the strengths of filet-welded joints are higher than the nominal strengths calculated for all the cases tested, and also approximately on the same level regardless of plate thickness and fillet weld size. Especially, the specimens with weld size les than that required by Korean design rules showed no visible defects on welds and also no str ength reduction.

Effect of Blast Cleaning on Fatigue Behavior of Non-load-carrying Fillet Welded Cruciform Joints (블라스트 표면처리가 하중비전달형 십자필렛 용접이음의 피로거동에 미치는 영향)

  • Blast cleaning has been applied in steel bridges for cleaning forged surface and increasing adhesive property of applied coating systems. Blasting is the operation of cleaning or preparing a surface by forcible propelling a stream of abrasive metals against it. Blast cleaning may improve surface geometry and induce compressive residual stress, and eventually may increase fatigue life of weld joints. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on three types of non-load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, as-welded joints, blast-treated joints, and stress-relieved joints after blasting, in order to investigate effect of blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of the weld joints. By Blast cleaning, the weld toe radius was increased by 29% and compressive residual stress was induced near weld toes. Blast cleaning increased fatigue life and fatigue endurance limit of the weld joints. When the applied stress ranges decreased, the increment in fatigue life became larger. About a 150% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.

  • In this study, constant amplitude fatigue tests on load-carrying fillet welded specimen carried out, and fatigue strengths were evaluated. Also, an attempt is made to develop a new analytical model with more accuracy to predict the fatigue crack propagation life of fillet welded cruciform joints of SWS 490B steels containing lack of penetration defects. from the result of this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, containing lack of penetration defacts are found to be affected by the weld geometry and the number of weld pass.

  • We investigated the effect of weld details on fatigue behavior of a material, JIS SM 490 A, with yielding strength of about 350 MPa and tensile strength of about 520 MPa. Tensile tests, instrumented indentation tests and fatigue tests were carried out on double V-grooved butt weld plates such as reinforcement removed, as-welded and weld toe ground. In addition plates with transverse fillet welded web, load carrying cruciform fillet welded plates, non-load-carrying cruciform fillet welded plates and longitudinal butt welded plates were tested. S-N curves for the above specimens were obtained and analyzed
