  • This paper describes an unscented Kalman filter approach to estimate the bias in magnetic field measurements. A microelectromechanical systems attitude heading reference system (MEMS AHRS) was used to measure the magnetic field, together with the acceleration and angular rate. A magnetic field is usually used for yaw detection, while the acceleration serves to detect the roll and pitch. Magnetic field measurements are vulnerable to distortion due to hard-iron effect and soft-iron effect. The bias in the measurement accounts for the hard-iron effect, and this paper focuses on an approach to estimate this bias. The proposed method is compared with other methods through experiments that implement the navigation of an underwater robot using an AHRS and Doppler velocity log. The results verify that the compensation of the bias by the proposed method improves the navigation performance more than or comparable to the compensation by other methods.

  • This paper proposed a new magnetic field detection algorithm to detect metal pieces in food producing processes. This algorithm can detect mixed metal pieces by sensing magnetic field. Some metal pieces are passed through an over-current circuit to magnetize them. The magnetic field sensor can detect the change in the magnetic field on theconveyor belt caused by the flow of the metal pieces in the food product. However, such a method detects the output of signals that change their amplitude and phase according to the movement of the conveyor belt with the food product, in which the equilibrium of the positive signal that is created in the receiver coil loses its balance due to the magnetized material. This includes not only the signal elements resulting from the effect of the alternating magnetic fields of the mixed metals, but also the signal elements resulting from the effect of the alternating magnetic fields of the examined object itself.

  • In this paper, the wave propagation in an infinite poroelastic cylindrical bone with cavity is studied. An exact closed form solution is presented by employing an analytical procedure. The frequency equation for poroelastic bone is obtained when the boundaries are stress free and is examined numerically. The magnitude of the frequency equation, wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are calculated for poroelastic bone for different values of magnetic field, density and frequency. In wet bone little frequency dispersion was observed, in contrast to the results of earlier studies. Such a model would in particular be useful in large-scale parametric studies of bone mechanical response. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, density and frequency on wave propagation in poroelastic bone are very pronounced.

  • Effect of transverse electric field on crack kinking in ferroelectric ceramics subjected to purely electric loading is investigated. It is shown that the shape and size of the domain switching zone depends strongly on the direction of the applied electric field as well as the ratio of the transverse electric field to the coercive electric field. Under small-scale conditions, mode I and II stress intensity factors induced by ferroelectric domain switching are numerically obtained. The crack kinking in ferroelectrics is also discussed.

  • The effect of electric fields on flame speed has been investigated experimentally by observing propagating premixed flames in a tube for methane/air mixtures. The flame speeds were measured in both the normal and micro gravity conditions to substantiate the measurements. The results show that the flame speeds were enhanced by both the AC and DC electric fields, as the flame approached to the high voltage electrode located on the one end of the tube. The enhancement of flame speed was proportional to the square root of the electric field intensity, defined as the voltage applied divided by the distance of flame from the high voltage electrode, when the electric field intensity is sufficiently large. When the electric field intensity was low, there existed critical intensities, below which the electric fields did not influence the flame speed. This critical electric field intensity correlated well with the flame speed.

  • Recently, high-strength concrete used for shortening the construction time of high-rise building construction, Concrete pumping technology is emerging as the core technology of high-rise buildings. In this paper, we have started to study the use of electromagnetic field as a method to increase the efficiency of the lubricating layer between the inside of the pipe and concrete, which has been established as the most important factor determining the pumping performance. The pumping performance improvement effect of concrete strength was verified and basic research was carried out to utilize it as a method to increase the efficiency of pumping in field application. In the related work, the effect of the electromagnetic field was verified by conducting a mock-up performance evaluation (horizontal 300 m) of the pumping force by the concrete strength.

  • The effect of magnetic field on NOx removal characteristics from a combustion flue gas has been experimentally investigated for a DC corona discharge reactor with a multipoint plate geometry in our Lab. Combustion flue gas removal efficiency of this type was much higher than that of the other types. In this paper, needle-plate geometry discharge system with applied magnetic field at a right angle to the electric field was made. Input power source was used negative DC. The corona discharge characteristics for this system was investigated and compared with the corona characteristics for the corona discharge system without magnetic field.

  • Iron-based superconductors (IBSs) possess nematic phases in which rotational symmetry of the electronic structure is spontaneously broken. This novel phase has attracted much attention as it is believed to be closely linked to the superconductivity. However, observation of the symmetry broken phase by using a macroscopic experimental tool is a hard task because of naturally formed twin domains. Here, we report on a novel detwinning method by using a magnetic field on FeTe single crystal. Detwinning effect was measured by resistivity anisotropy using the Montgomery method. Our results show that FeTe was detwinned at 2T, which is a relatively weak field compared to the previously reported result. Furthermore, detwinning effect is retained even when the field is turned off after field cooling, making it an external stimulation-free detwinning method.

  • This paper deals with magnetic field analysis and computation of cogging torque in IPM motor with an analytical method, which is based on the Conformal Mapping technique. The magnetic field is analyzed by solving space harmonic field analysis due to inserted PM magnetizing distribution. Conformal Mapping method is then used for considering the slot opening effect and rotor saliency effect on the air-gap field magnetic distribution. Then, by integrating the field over the stator surface, cogging torque is calculated. The validity of the proposed analytical method is confirmed by comparing the results with 2-D FEA results.
