Cement-asbestos slate is the main asbestos containing material. It is a product made by combining 10~20% of asbestos and cement components. Man- and weathering-induced degradation of the cement-asbestos slates makes them a source of dispersion of asbestos fibres and represents a priority cause of concern. When the asbestos enters the human body, it causes cellular damage or deformation, and is not discharged well in vitro, and has been proven to cause diseases such as lung cancer, asbestos, malignant mesothelioma and pleural thickening. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has designated asbestos as a group 1 carcinogen. Currently, most of these slats are disposed in a designated landfill, but the landfill capacity is approaching its limit, and there is a potential risk of exposure to the external environment even if it is land-filled. Therefore, this study aimed to exam the possibility of detoxification of asbestos-containing slate by using exothermic reaction and heat treatment. Cement-asbestos slate from the asbestos removal site was used for this experiment. Exothermic catalysts such as calcium chloride(CaCl2), magnesium chloride(MgCl2), sodium hydroxide(NaOH), sodium silicate(Na2SiO3), kaolin[Al2Si2O5(OH)4)], and talc[Mg3Si4O10(OH)2] were used. Six catalysts were applied to the cement-asbestos slate, respectively and then analyzed using TG-DTA. Based on the TG-DTA results, the heat treatment temperature for cement-asbestos slate transformation was determined at 750℃. XRD, SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS analyses were performed on the samples after the six catalysts applied to the slate and heat-treated at 750℃ for 2 hours. It was confirmed that chrysotile[Mg3Si2O5(OH5)] in the cement-asbestos slate was transformed into forsterite (Mg2SiO4) by catalysts and heat treatment. In addition, the change in the shape of minerals was observed by applying a physical force to the slate and the heat treated slate after coating catalysts. As a result, the chrysotile in the cement-asbestos slate maintained fibrous form, but the cement-asbestos slate after heat treatment of applying catalyst was broken into non-fibrous form. Therefore, this study shows the possibility to safely verify the complete transformation of asbestos minerals in this catalyst- and temperature-induced process.
The purpose of this study was to observe the responses of the remaining pulp tissue after pulpotomy upon the several kinds of $Ca(OH)_2$ products and the responses of periapical tissue upon some root canal filling materials after extirpation. For pulpotomy, the class V cavities were prepared on the premolars, molars and upper canines, and the pulp was amputated. Each drug was placed over the amputated tissue and cavity was sealed with zinc oxide eugenol cement. The drugs which were used for the study were Dycal (Caulk Co. U.S.A.), Cavitec (Kerr Co. U.S.A.), Calvital, Nobudyne and Neodyne (Neo Dental Chemical Products). For extirpation, the endodontic cavities were prepared on the lingual surfaces of anterior teeth, and the pulp tissues were extirpated as routine method. After enlarging, irrigation, and measuring of root length by taking X-ray, each root canal filling material was filled in the canal with gutta percha cone, and endodontic cavity was sealed with zinc oxide eugenol cement. Zinc oxide eugenol, $Ca(OH)_2$ (Eli Lilly Co. U.S.A.) and Vitapex (Neo Dental Chemical Products) were used as root canal filling materials. Animals were sacrificed after 1, 3 and 6 weeks following the operation. The teeth were decalcified in formic acid, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin eosin. Microscopic examination revealed as follows. 1. Dycal: The dentin bridge formation was observed at the 3rd week after pulpotomy. Inflammatory conditions which were infiltration of inflammatory cells and dilatation of blood vessels were kept in remaining pulp tissue at the 6th week. 2. Calvital: The dentin bridge was observed at the 1st week after pulpotomy. As the time clasped, the pulp tended to be the fibrous degeneration. 3. Cavitec, Nobudyne and Neodyne: In the case of Cavitec and Nobudyne, the incompleted and irregular dentin bridge was observed at the 6th week, and in Neodyne, was observed at the 3rd week. The severe inflammatory changes were seen in the remaining pulp tissue. As the time clasped, the fibrous degeneration tended to spread in the remaining pulp tissue. 4. $Ca(OH)_2$: Osteocementum was formed at the 3rd week, the matrix of cementum and dentin were resorted, and infiltration of lymphocytes was seen in periapical tissue when $Ca(OH)_2$ was used as canal-filling materials. S. ZOE and Vitapex The cementum like substance was seen in periapical portion at the 1st week, when ZOE and Vitapex were used as root canal filling materials. As the time elapsed, the matrix of cementum and dentin tended to be resorted. At the 6th week, the inflammatory condition of periapical tissue was continued in the case of ZOE, but was reduced in the case of Vitapex.

Recently, for longevity of resident building, the main trend is that the change of the inside space organization of resident building from wall construction to rhamen construction, which resulted in increase in use of lightweight composite panel. Thus, in this study, authors analyzed the engineering property of oxide of magnesium depending on the magnesium chloride addition ratio. The results of this research is expected to contribute on providing a fundamental material for the surface materials of lightweight composite panel. As the result of the experiment, as fluidity increased, air content decreased and initial set and final set as the magnesium chloride addition ratio increase. In the aspect of flexural strength and compressive strength, the test specimen showed the highest strength at 40% of the magnesium chloride addition ratio. At 20% of the magnesium chloride addition ratio, the test specimen showed the lowest water absorption rate. As the magnesium chloride addition ratio increases, the expansibility tends to increase as well in the aspect of shrinkage strain. After observing microstructure, we can see hydration products in the form of needle. It appeared high flexural strength because the hydration products have mineral fibrous tissue shape, which also contribute to the cause of the expansibility.
An ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to stop the disease process and to regenerate a functionally-oriented periodontium destroyed as a result of periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of grafting granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket on the regeneration of horizontal furcation defect. Six dogs were used in this study. All mandibular first and third premolars were extracted. At 2, 3, and 5 days after extraction, tissues were obtained from extraction socket of 1 mongrel dog and examined by light microscope. Granulation tissue obtained at 5 days after extraction was chosen as the graft material. Five days later, horizontal furcation defects were created surgically at mandibular second and fourth premolars in the right and left side of the 5 beagle dogs. The entrance area of the artificially prepared "key hole" defects were about $3\;4mm^2$. By random selections, 2 exposed furcation defects were grafted with granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket as experimental group and 1 furcation defect was as control. The flaps were replaced to their original position and sutured with 4-0 chromic cat-gut. Three dogs were sacrificed 4 weeks and two dogs 8 weeks after surgery, and the prepared specimens were examined by light microscope. At 4 weeks, furcations were filled with epithelial lining and fibrous connective tissue infiltrated with chronic inflammatory cells. New bone formation was observed in all groups. Only experimental group showed new cementum formation. At 8 weeks, new cementum, functional arrangement of new PDL fiber, root resorption, and some ankylotic union of newly formed alveolar bone and root surface were observed in all groups. Experimental group showed that epithelial downgrowth was inhibited and new bone formation was more active compared to control. The success rate of the furcation defect healing was higher in experimental group than control. These results suggested that grafting of granulation tissue obtained from extraction socket which combined with reconstructive periodontal flap surgery may promote periodontal regeneration of horizontal furcation defect.
Primary chest wall tumors originate from soft tissue, bone or cartilage of the chest wall and it comprises 1∼2% of all primary tumors. Resection of tumor is often indicated for chronic ulceration or pain, and long-term survival might be achieved after surgery depending on the histology and the surgical procedure. Material and Method: Retrospective study of 125 primary chest wall tumors (86 benign, 39 malignant) operated between Sep. 1976 to Mar 2001 were reviewed and their clinical outcomes were analyzed. Follow-up data were collected at the outpatient clinic. Result: All patients with benign tumors were treated by excision without recurrence or death, and most malignancies were treated by wide resection. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma and chondrosarcoma constituted 46.2% of the malignant neoplasm. There was no operative death. The overall 3-year survival for patients with primary malignant neoplasm was 76.0%, and the 10-year survival was 60.5%. All deaths were disease-related and the tumor recurred in 11 patients. There was no significant difference in survival between patients with resection margins less than 4 cm and those with resection margins greater than 4 cm. Conclusion: Chest wall resection offers excellent results for benign chest wall tumors and substantial long-term survival for malignant diseases. Safe resection margin of 4 cm or more did not correlate with the survival rate although the tumor recurrence correlated with poor survival.

Background: Pathologic confirmation is needed to diagnose various forms of interstitial lung diseases. We wanted to find out how much the thoracic surgical lung biopsies will be needed for definite diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases. Material and Method: 17 patients underwent surgical lung biopsy in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Gyeongsang National University Hospital from June 1995 to November 2002. Chart review and telephone questionnaire were done for retrospective study. Result: Mean age was $49{\pm}22$ years. Age ranged from 1 to 70 years. Dyspnea was the most common complaint. They were referred for definite differential diagnosis from pediatrics and internal medicine. Biopsy methods were thoracotomy in 11 cases, and thoracoscopy in 6 cases. Pathologic confirmation was possible in 11 cases (65%). According to the pathologic reports, treatment plans were changed in 13 cases (76%). Conclusion: Surgical lung biopsy was effective method in differentiating diagnosis of the interstitial lung disease, There was no mortality during operation. It is important that undiagnosed fibrous lung disease should be recommanded the lung biopsy for planning patient's treatment.

Objective of this study was to investigate the effects of pre-treatment of rice straw by sizes(3cm, milled), temperatures($35^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$), with/without NaOH treatment, and RPM on the characteristics of volatile fatty acids production. The concentration of total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) was increased with the hydrolyzed time. Concentration of VFAs in milled rice straw was higher than that in 3 cm cut. With the alkali treatment, the concentration of TVFAs were sharply increased, which showed 3 times higher than non-treatment. Concentration of VFAs was high at 150 rpm at $35^{\circ}C$, and at 80rpm and 200 rpm at $55^{\circ}C$. Among them acetic acid was dominant, which showed the similar increase with TVFAs. It was also observed that in the case of fibrous material, the contents of cellulose and hemi-cellulose were reduced a little, but no change in lignin.

Aneurysmal bone cyst(ABC) is a benign lesion and generally occurs in the long bones and vertebral column. ABC of the rib is an uncommon entity. We reported a case of ABC originating in the left first rib. The patient was a 19-year-old woman and presented with palpable mass on the shoulder. Chest X ray and MRI showed a large expansile mass, with multiple cystic areas, arising from the left first rib and bulging out into retroclavicular and paravertebral soft tissue, so the lesion was initially misdiagnosed as a soft tissue malignant tumor destructing adjacent rib. On histological examination, the mass, which was surrounded by a peripheral band of mature trabecular bone, consisted of multiple anastomosing cavernous blood channels separated by fibrous septa that containing osteoid, myxochondroid material and osteoclast-type giant cells.
Emulsification sausages were prepared in 3 different ways: T1: fat added after ice, T2: fat added before ice, T3: all ingredients added together. Each sample was ground for 4.5 min by a silent cutter at $15^{\circ}C$ and emulsified batters were stuffed into fibrous casing and then cooked for 40 min at $78^{\circ}C$ to determine the effect of the order of ingredient addition on the qualities of emulsion type sausage. The pH of T1 sausage was significantly higher, whereas the pH of T3 was significantly lower compared with the other samples(p<0.05). The shear force was significantly higher in T1 sausage, however the hardness and gumminess were significantly lower in T1 sausage compared with other two types(p<0.05). With regard to sensory evaluation, the relative amounts of flavor can be summarized as T2>T1>T3, and the color was significantly higher in T1 and T2 compared with T3(p<0.05). There was no significant difference among the test sausages with regard to aroma, juiciness, tenderness and overall acceptability(p>0.05). There were no significant differences in free moisture, water holding capacity(WHC), meat color and texture properties such as brittleness, cohesiveness, springiness and chewiness. As a result of this study, the sausage were much for sausage prepared by adding the fat after the ice(T1) than the other sausage samples in which fat was added after ice to make emulsion type sausages.
Statement of the problem: In case of poor bone quality or immediately loaded implant, various strategies have been developed focusing on the surface of materials to improve direct implant fixation to the bone. The microscopic properties of implant surfaces play a major role in the osseous healing of dental implant. Purpose of study: This study was undertaken to evaluate bone response of ion beam-assisted deposition(IBAD) of hydroxyapatite(HA) on the anodized surface of subperiosteal titanium implants. Material and methods: Two half doughnut shape subperiosteal titanium implants were made. The control group was treated with Anodized surface treatment and the test group was treated with IBAD of HA on control surface. Then two implants inserted together into the subperiosteum of the skull of 30 rats and histological response around implant was observed under LM(light microscope) and TEM(transmission electron microscope) on 4th, 6th and 8th week. Results: Many subperiosteal implants were fixed with fibrous connective tissue not with bony tissue because of weak primary stability. The control group observed poor bone response and there was no significant change at any observation time. However the test group showed advanced bone formation and showed direct bone to implant contact under LM on 8th week. The test group observed much rER in the cell of osteoblast but the control group showed little rER under TEM. Conclusions: The test group showed better bone formation than the control group at the condition of weak primary stability. With these results IBAD surface treatment method on Anodized surface, may be good effect at the condition of weak primary stability.
