  • The suspension of the optical pickup actuator is damped by the presence of silicone rubber damper bond at its termination. In spite of the presence of it, the actuator still exhibits a strong mechanical resonance which affects its settling time and vibrational characteristics. This resonance can cause errors in reading information from the disk, particularly in high speed CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Ferrofluids are stable colloidal suspensions of sub-micron sized magnetic particles in a carrier liquid. In the actuator design, ferrofluid is applied to the surface of the magnets until the quantity is sufficient to maintain intimate contact with the bobbin/carrier assembly. The fluid is retained in the magnetic field and its viscosity provides the desired mechanical damping to the moving assembly, improving the actuators settling time and vibrational characteristics. Access time is also improved, particularly on warped or eccentric discs.

  • Surface motion of a magnetic fluid is studied by a linear stability analysis. When a thin horizontal magnetic-fluid layer is placed on a nonmagnetic substrate, with a vertical magnetic field applied, the surface of the ferrofluid layer can be severely corrugated, due to the normal-field instability. Based on conservation laws, it is shown that the normal-field instability of thin ferrofluid layers is a long-wave instability and that it is analogous to the interfacial mode of the thermocapillary instability in a thin horizontal layer heated from below.

  • An inverse ferrofluid composed of micron sized polymethylmethacrylate particles dispersed in ferrofluid was used to investigate the effects of test duration times on determining the flow curves of these materials under constant magnetic field. The results showed that flow curves determined using low duration times were most likely not measuring the steady state rheological response. However, at longer duration times, which are expected to correspond more to steady state behaviour, we noticed the occurrence of plateau and decreasing flow curves in the shear rate range of $0.004\;s^{-1}$ to ${\sim}20\;s^{-1}$, which suggest the presence of nonhomogeneities and shear localization in the material. This behaviour was also reflected in the steady state results from shear start up tests performed over the same range of shear rates. The results indicate that care is required when interpreting flow curves obtained for inverse ferrofluids.

  • This study investigated torque characteristics for Couette flow experimentally under circumstaces that ferrofluids were between two coaxial spheres. Torque measurement was obtained for the situation where the inner sphere was rotating while the outer sphere was kept stationary. The magnetic field was imposed on the fluid, using a bar magnet which was inserted in the inner sphere. In the laminar flow region the torque increase when the magnetic field is applied and the critical Reynolds number is increased. However, in the transition regime, the effect of the magnetic field on the torque characteristics decrease as Reynolds number increases. The value of torque were the same as those of glycerine solution beyond the cirtical Reynolds number. We also made experimental equation which could obtain coefficient of torque within critical Reynolds number in terms of sphere spacing Reynolds number and magnetic properties of ferrofluid.

  • Magnetic ferrofluids attract much attention in realation with their capacity as carriers to increase local concentrations of drugs in specific targeted site. Hematoporphyrin (HP) is known to have anticancer activater by producing reactive oxygen species on irraiation of light.(omitted)
