  • Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness of breast cancer risk factors among female university students in 24 low, middle income and emerging economy countries. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 10,242 undergraduate university students (mean age 20.7, SD=2.9) from 25 universities in 24 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Using anonymous questionnaires the awareness of links between breast cancer and heredity, diet, overweight, exercise, alcohol use, smoking and stress was assessed. Results indicated that 35.4% of the women were not aware that any of these risk factors could influence breast cancer, 43.8% were aware of a genetic link, and only 12.5%, 10.9% and 10.6% correctly identified alcohol use, overweight and physical inactivity, respectively, as factors causing breast cancer. Moreover, 13.3% rated dietary fat and 11.5% fibre as influencing breast cancer; both low-fat and high-fibre diets may be weakly protective against breast cancer, and smoking (19.4%) and stress (13.5%), the most commonly chosen breast cancer lifestyle risk factors, have less clear impact on breast cancer. There were marked country differences, e.g., in regards of being aware of genetic causes of breast cancer risk in female students from Ivory Coast, India, Madagascar, Nigeria and Laos below 30% and female students from Pakistan, Singapore, Turkey, Grenada and Philippines 60 or more percent. This study provides insight in the breast cancer risk perception of young women, which can be utilized in breast cancer awareness and prevention programmes.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the sun protection use behaviour among university students from 25 low, middle income and emerging economy countries. Using anonymous questionnaires, data were collected from 18,687 undergraduate university students aged 18-30 years (mean age 20.8, SD=2.8) from 26 universities in 25 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Overall, 57.2% of university students reported liking to sunbathe and of those only 48.1% used sun protection when sunbathing. In multivariate logistic regression, younger age, being female, coming from a wealthy or quite well off economic family background, living in an upper middle or high income country, lighter skin tone, and other health behaviours were found to be associated with sun protection use behaviour. Low sun protection use calls for health promotion programmes to prevent unprotected sun exposure.

  • The objectives of this research were to identify the differences of image evaluations by perceiver's gender, majors and jeans' finishing and to examine image characteristics that have an influence on attractiveness and preferences of jeans' finishing. The subjects are 96 undergraduate students in Los Angeles of the USA. Elegant and refined images had a significant effort on perceiver's gender, so men tended to highly evaluate jeans as elegant and refined images than did women. Soft images were recognized differently by perceiver's major, so non-specialists in design tended to highly evaluate jeans as soft images than did specialists in design. In finishing, shattered wash was evaluated as the most individual, attractive, energetic, and splendid images, and stone wash was evaluated as the most ordinary, unattractive, and plain images. Light images tended to have interaction effects by majors and finishing. Specialists in design did not perceive differences between light images from finishing well, but non-specialists in design perceived that stone wash finishing's image is lighter than indigo blue finishing's image. Sociable images had interaction effects by perceiver's gender, majors and jeans' finishing, and especially non-specialists in men estimated that shattered wash has the lowest sociable images in finishing. According to evaluations about finishing images of ladies' jeans, men tended to be attracted by splendid images, and women tended to be attracted by sexy images. • The principal objectives of this study were : 1) to classify groups via cluster analysis for undergraduate's attributes of restaurant choice, and 2) to assess differences in dining-out behaviors among each restaurant choice cluster. Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 387 students, and the data were analyzed via frequency analysis, chi-square, one-way ANOVA, factor analysis, reliability analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis. Three clusters were obtained by the attributes of restaurant choice from cluster analysis : Cluster 1 "indifferent style", Cluster 2 "ordinary style", and Cluster 3 "highly interested (careful) style". As for connections between the attributes of restaurant choice and distinctive dining-out behaviors in different undergraduates clusters, an indifferent style was rampant among the male students in their lower academic years. This group of students responded that they ate out only to satisfy their hunger, and stayed in a restaurant for one hour or less. Their friends made the choice of a restaurant on their behalf. The students in the "ordinary style" group spent between 5 and 10 thousand won to dine out, and stayed in a restaurant with their friends for two hours or less. They made the choice of a restaurant on their own, or together with their friends. A highly interested (careful) style prevailed among the female students in the upper academic year. This group of students ate out in order to mingle with their friends or colleagues rather than to satisfy their hunger, and they generally made a choice of a restaurant on their behalf.

  • The popularity of beauty makeup applications has dramatically increased among young Korean female social media users. The current experimental study examined how the use of beauty makeup applications when taking and posting selfies influences social media users' mood, body satisfaction, and self-esteem. A total of 114 female undergraduate students participated in experiments which included two conditions of taking selfies with and without the use of beauty makeup applications. Participants reported their current mood, and body satisfaction as well as self-esteem before and after experiments. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variances. The significant interactions between experimental groups and time (pre- and post-test) were found for negative mood, positive mood, and body satisfaction. Participants who took selfies using beauty makeup applications were in a significantly better mood compared to those taking selfies without the use of a beauty makeup application. The level of body satisfaction significantly decreased only for women who took selfies without the use of a beauty makeup application. This study extends the current literature of virtual makeup behavior and body image.
