  • Incorporating herbicides application into a fertilization program has several benefits including saving time and reducing traffics on the lawn. Premixed products of fertilizers and herbicides are commonly known as Weed & Feed in the lawn-care industry. To compare Weed & Feed with separate applications of fertilizers and herbicides on a Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) lawn, a Weed & Feed 28-3-3, containing 0.64% 2,4-D, 0.31% MCPP, and 0.03% dicamba of active ingredients, was used in this study. The first application was in May, with the second in June or Sept. Herbicides in forms of 2,4-D (LV-4, 4EC), MCPP (4EC), and dicamba (Clarity, 4EC) were applied at rates equal to the amounts in Weed & Feed or at half of the rates. The dominant weed in both locations was common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber.) in 2005 and 2004. A secondary weed was Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) in 2004 and broadleaf plantain (Plantago major L.) in 2005. When applied in May and June, fertilizer plus full rate of herbicides treatment achieved 112.3 and 83.7 days of acceptable turf quality in 2004 and 2005, respectively. During the same period, Weed & Feed resulted in 58.7 and 24.3 days of acceptable turf quality, respectively. Our study showed that Weed & Feed was generally as effective in weed control as the same amount of fertilizer plus half rates of herbicides sprayed although results may vary due to the timing of application. Fertilizer plus full rates of herbicides provided the same or better results of weed control than Weed & Feed.

  • Three experiments were conducted with broilers to study the effects of early feed restriction. In all studies, treatments were represented by three replicated floor pens, each containing 20 birds. In Experiment 1, broilers were fed at 0.75 kcal ME/g BW/sup0.67 for 3 d, 1.5kcal m/E BW/sup0.67 for 5 d or 2.25 kcal ME/g BW/sup0.67 for 7 d, all imposed beginning at 7 d of age. Birds were smaller following feed restriction(P<0.05), although growth compensation occurred, and at 49 d all restricted birds were same(P>0.05) to full-fed control buds in body weight. Growth compensation was associated with improved feed conversion(P<0.05), although carcass composition was unchanged. In a second study, all birds were fed at 0.75 kcal ME/g BW/sup0.67 for 3 or 5 d, starting at either 4, 7, or 10 d of age. When feed restriction was applied for shorter periods of time, growth compensation occurred(P>0.05). With more severe feed restriction, birds were smaller(P<0.05) at 49 d compared to control. Feed conversion was improved following prior feed restriction(P<0.05, 4 to 49). In a third trial, broilers were fed a starter diet diluted with 50% rice hulls. Birds failed to consume enough of this diluted feed, and so were initially smaller, However 49 d weight was not affected (P>0.05). When periods of 24 h feed withdrawal were imposed in conjunction with the diluted diets, birds were under weight at 49 d. It is concluded that physical feed restriction at 0.75 to 1.5 kcal ME/g BW$\^$0.67 imposed for 3 to 5 d in the early life currently presents the best option as a means of controlling broiler growth so as to improve feed efficiency.

  • Objective: To investigate the effects of enzyme-bacteria co-fermented feed on broilers, the basal diet (BF) was pretreated by microbial enzyme co-fermentation, and then different proportions of BF were replaced to study its effects on growth performance, nutrient metabolism and cecal microflora of broilers. Methods: Four hundred and eighty 1-day-old broilers were randomly divided into 6 groups. The control group was fed with BF, and groups 1 to 4 were treated with dried fermented feed (DFF) instead of 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% the BF, and group 5 was treated with wet fermented feed (WFF) instead of 10% the BF, named BF, 10% DFF, 15% DFF, 20% DFF, 25% DFF, and 10% WFF, respectively. The trial period was 42 days. Results: The results showed that the average daily feed intake and average daily gain of 10% DFF, 15% DFF, and 10% WFF groups were significantly higher than those of the control group at 22 to 42 days and 1 to 42 days (p<0.05). Except for 10% DFF group, Firmicutes of all treatment were higher than that of control group. The Bacteroides of each treatment group were lower than that of the control group (p>0.05). At the same time, the nutrient apparent metabolic rate and cecal microbial abundance of each treatment group had an increasing trend (p>0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, the feed fermented by enzyme and bacteria had a potential promoting effect on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers.

  • There are three main devices such as boiler producing steam, turbine driving generator and generator producing electricity. An electrical generator in power plant is driven and maintained its speed at rated by steam turbine which is coupled into generator directly. Turbine auxiliary devices such as condenser, deaerator, feed water heater, gland steam condenser, pump recirculation equipment, feed water pump, and so on should be operated well so that the steam turbine exert its maximum efficiency. There are many control loop such as hot well level and condenser recirculation, deaerator level, pegging steam pressure, feed water heater level, feed water pump recirculation. In this paper condenser level control and deaerator level control are going to be described.

  • A flexible disk grinding system process has been introduced that utilized varying disk orientation with respect to workpiece along with the applied feed speed. Various process conditions including cutting speed, maximum feed speed and orientation angles could applied to observe process outcomes. Even though continuous and constant feed speed has been applied to the process, the results from the trapezoidal input velocity profiles would be observed and compared. Based on the control strategies including neural network methodologies, several output results were compared to find the optimum process condition. Two axis control results were displayed showing better performance with higher trajectory error for larger training epoch.

  • Typically, a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) uses a PID feed-back system, and it often adopts a wind feed-forward system because of its easier implementation than a feed-forward system based on current or wave. But, because a ship's drifting motion is caused by wind, current, and wave drift loads, all three environmental loads should be considered. In this study, a motion predictive control for the PID feedback system of the DPS is proposed, which considers the three environmental loads by utilizing predicted drifted ship positions in the future since it contains information about the three environmental loads from the moment to the future. The prediction accuracy for the future drifted ship position is ensured by adopting deep learning algorithms and a replay buffer. Finally, it is shown that the proposed motion predictive system results in better station-keeping performance than the wind feed-forward system.

  • A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing MAXIMINERAL(72)(MM), a cornmercial product of Ca, Mg-bentonite, to the broiler diet. One thousand hatched rnale broiler chickens(Cobb strain) were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments; MM 0% (control), MM 1%, MM 2%, and MM 2% + tricalciurnphosphate (CaP) 0.5%. Each treatment had 5 replicates of 50 birds each. Birds were grown on floor and fed ad libitum for 5 wk. Through the whole period, weight gain and feed intake were not significantly different among treatments. However, weight gain of MM 2% + CaP 0.5% group was highest and orthogonal contrast showed that the feed intake during the period of 0~2 wk was significantly(p<0.01) lower in MM supplemented groups than the control. Feed efficiency (feed /gain) of MM supplemented groups were significantly better than the control. Feed efficiency of the control was significantly(p<0.05) higher than MM 1% and MM 2% + CaP 0.5% groups but not different from MM 2% group. Contents of ash, Ca and P of tibia were not significantly different among treatments but that of P tended to be low in MM 1% and MM 2% groups. There were significant (p<0.01) differences in plasma alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity among treatments. The highest AP activity was shown in MM 2% + CaP 0.5% group followed by the control, MM 2% and MM 1% group. It was concluded that supplernentation of MM at the level of 1% of broiler diet significantly improves feed efficiency and adjustment of P level rnay further improve the performance of the broiler chickens.

  • Linear motor feed drive systems have been broadly used in machine tools or precision automatic feed systems. Recently, modem machine tools require high speed and high precision feed drive system to achieve high productivity. Unfortunately, a feed drive system, even though it was optimum designed, may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slides system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a machine tool feed slide system, which is driven by a linear motor, for its minimum vibrations. Firstly, a 4-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model is proposed for the vibration analysis of a linear motor driven machine tool feed drive system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide is carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile with jerk continuity. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.

  • Adaptive feed forward control algorithms based largely upon LMS approach have developed in recent two decades, and they have been widely applied to practical sound and vibration control problems in the case of the reference signal is available. Feedforward control can be applied only when reference signals can be measured or regenerated, while feedback controllers are used to reduce; sound and vibration when reference signals are not available. In recent years, hybrid control schemes in which adaptive feed forward controllers are combined with feedback ones have been studied based on simulations and experiments. The results have shown that the hybrid control may have better control performances in convergence speed and steady state error than the single control schemes. Hybrid control has the advantages of improving stability and performance as well as the disturbance rejection property. However, little effort has been made to the analysis or interpretation of hybrid control systems. In this study, we discussed the feedback controller effects on the stability of feed forward control algorithm in the presence of uncertain error path and a simple example showed that a stable feedback controller could make the feedforward controller unstable. A design criterion of feedback controllers is proposed in order to guarantee the stability of feedforward algorithms in the presence of error paths with uncertainties.
