Cholesterol-Lowering Lactic Acid Bacteria from Kimchi

  • Lactic acid bacteria are dominant microflora in fermented kimchi. In this study, lactic acid bacteria were isolated from 5 kinds of fermented kimchi and determined their physiologic property. Total 64 of LAB were isolated from kimch samples. In this study, 8 strains of them were selected by pH and bile salt tolerance test. HFI 58, HFI 40, and Yeulmu E strain had significant cholesterol lowering effect in vitro test. These were made of special feed of chicken by WooJin B&G. A Diet was tested for 5 weeks. The feed of special material supplement HFI58 groups had significant lower cholesterol concentration in egg yolk.

Comparative studies of gasification potential of agro-waste with wood and their characterization

  • In this work, an experimental study of the gasification on wood was carried out in downdraft type fixed bed Gasifier attached with 10 kW duel fuel diesel engine. The main objective of the study was to use wood as the biomass fuel for downdraft Gasifier and to evaluate the operating parameter of gasifier unit to predict its performance in terms of gas yield and cold gas efficiency. The influence of different biomass on fuel consumption rate, gas yield and cold gas efficiency was studied. Composition of producer gas was also detected for measuring the lower heating value of producer gas to select the feed stock so that optimum performance in the existing gasifier unit can be achieved. Under the experimental conditions, Lower heating value, of producer gas, cold gas efficiency and gas yields, using wood as a feed stock, are $4.85MJ/m^3$, 46.57% and $0.519m^3/kg$.

  • The aquatic fern Azolla spp. is of value as a bio-fertilizer for wetland paddy, and also can be used as an ideal feed for cattle, pigs and poultry. It is popular and cultivated widely in other countries like China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, but has yet to be taken up in Korea, in a big way. It fixes nitrogen as high as 3-5kg N per day, because it contains nitrogen fixing blue-green algae, Anabaena azollae. Azolla's ability to create a light-proof mat that suppresses other weeds has been used for centuries in rice production. Azolla spp. has also the capacity to take up the heavy metals ($75{\sim}100%$) and may be used as a bioaccumulator. Moreover, Azolla meal as an unconventional feed resource has a potential as a feedstuff for livestock.

  • 최근 변화된 하천환경에서 대량 발생하는 조류는 다양한 수질 문제를 일으켜 이에 대한 관심이 점차 높아지고 있다. 특히 낙동강의 조류발생과 피해가 심화되면서 다양한 관련 연구가 폭넓게 수행되고 있으나, 본류와 지류가 만나는 합류부에서의 수리 수질 특성과 조류발생 간의 관계를 구명하기 위한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 낙동강-남강 합류부에서 녹조대발생기 현장측정을 통해 합류부에서의 조류와 수리 수질 특성 간의 관계를 파악하고자 하였다. 측정결과 수심별 조류의 분포양상이 수채 내 수온 및 수질인자 분포에 따른 성층정도와 관계가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 다양한 수질인자와 조류발생 간의 관계에 대한 분석을 통해 용존산소와 pH가 조류발생과 높은 상관관계를 보임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Current status, challenges and prospects for pig production in Asia

  • Asia is not only the primary region for global pig production but also the largest consumer of pork worldwide. Although the pig production in Asia has made great progress in the past, it still is confronted with numerous challenges. These challenges include: inadequate land and feed resources, a substantial number of small-scale pig farms, escalating pressure to ensure environmental conservation, control of devastating infectious diseases, as well as coping with high temperatures and high humidity. To solve these problems, important investments of human and financial capital are required to promote large-scale production systems, exploit alternative feed resources, implement precision feeding, and focus on preventive medicine and vaccines as alternatives to antibiotics, improve pig breeding, and increase manure recycling. Implementation of these techniques and management practices will facilitate development of more environmentally-friendly and economically sustainable pig production systems in Asia, ultimately providing consumers with healthy pork products around the world.

  • The huge amount of demand for feedgrains from this region could not possibly be met by producing countries from the other regions. In order to fulfill this increasing demand for conventional raw materials, an alternative for the conventional raw materials produced in the Asia and Pacific region is becoming increasingly more important. A potential alternative is concentrates or non-conventional concentrates produced locally in relative abundance in this region. These feedstuffs include feed grains, by-products from the milling, sugar industries, brewing and distilling industries. Vegetable, citrus, and animal by-products from abattoir, feather meal and blood meal are also possibilities. In addition to more widespread use of unconventional feed sources, the following approach is recommended to improve utilization and performance. These include establishing the nutritive value of non-conventional feeds, quality control to minimize variability, proper storage and processing to assure the nutritive value and prevent mycotoxin contamination, properly balance amino acids with protein sources, supplementation with synthetic amino acids and the use of enzymes to increase digestibility. Currently, practical applications for these resources in feed formulation are negligible despite the potential. The socio-economic aspects will dominate the use of these non-conventional concentrates. In the future, the feed industry will resolve the problems in using locally available raw feed materials.

Changes of Nitrogen and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus Content in Hanwoo Manure Using Probiotics to Feed and Manure: A Field Study (사료와 축분에 생균제 첨가 시 한우분 내 질소와 수용성인의 함량 변화: 현장연구 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus(SRP) contents from hanwoo manure using probiotics to feed and manure additives during 5 weeks. A total of 45 hanwoo(24 months old) with averaging $580{\pm}20$ kg in weight were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments with 3 replicates per treatment(5 hanwoo per pen, $5{\times}8m$). The treatment were supplemented, control, T1(10 kg roughage + 2 kg concentrate(2% probiotics as-fed basis)), and T2(10 kg roughage + 2 kg concentrate(2% probiotics as-fed basis) + 7 kg probiotics on the surface of hanwoo manure (top-dressing)). During the experimental period, there were statistically significant differences(P<0.05) in pH values at 3 and 5 weeks; TN contents at 5 weeks; and SRP contents at 5 weeks in all treatments. Adding probiotics to feed or feed and manure increased manure pH in comparison with controls. As time increased, changes in TN contents decreased in the order: T2 > Control > T1. Especially, the reduction in SRP contents in all treatments at 5 weeks was in following order: T1 > T2 > Control. This result suggests that it is possible to make efficient use of probiotics as feed and manure additives for reducing environmental pollution or to provide fundamental information on livestock managements to producers.

  • Nitrogen and phosphorus are major nutrients in animal feeds which partially remain in the environment as pollution. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus along with energy are the main nutrients which determine the feed cost. Any decreases in the levels of these three nutrients can contribute to reducing the pollution problem as well as the cost of feed. The nutrient requirements for chickens in the work here reported should allow for the addition of mixed enzymes (phytases, proteases, glucanases, xylanases and others). Such minimal levels of crude protein in the research results which are here reported are 16% for 0-6 weeks of age, 13.5% for 7-12 weeks of age, 11.5% for 13-18 weeks of age for layer type chicks, 13% for layer, 18% for 0-3 weeks of age broiler and 16.5% for 4-7 weeks of age broiler. These research projects have been done without adding enzyme supplements to their experimental diets. The minimal values of phosphorus, shown as available phosphorus, are 0.25% for pullets, 0.09% for layers and 0.25% for broilers with the addition of phytase. The minimum energy requirement (metabolizable energy) for reducing the feed cost could be summarized as 2,750 kcal per kg feed for pullets, 2,800 kcal for layers and 2,700 kcal for broilers.

Development of an Electronic Sow Feeder for Gestation Sows (임신돈 군사장치의 개발)

  • The study was conducted to develop an ESF (electronic sow feeder) for improving animal welfare of group housed gestation sows. Feed intake of both individual and group housed gestation sows was restricted 2 kg a day. ESF system was very effective in reducing feed loss. The amount of feed loss in treatment group (group housed gestation sows with ESF) was only about 55 g, while the amount of feed loss in control group (individually housed gestation sows) was about 200 g. In spend time to feed intake, there was no difference in the result between the control (about 30 min) and the treatment (about 22 min) group. The ESF system ran well without any mechanical problems throughout the entire experiment. These results suggest that the EST is expected to improve the performance feeding of sows.

The Effect of Dietary Fermented Soybean on the Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Pigs

  • This study investigated the effects of fermented soybean (FS) on growth and meat quality in pigs. A total thirty-six pigs were divided into 2 groups (2 treatment$\times$18 pigs each) and fed the experimental diets for 4 wk as follows: control (FS free); and T1 (FS 1%). The pigs in T1 had a higher feed efficiency compared with pigs fed control diets. pH was also significantly higher in the T1 group (p<0.05). Water-holding capacity measured in T1 was slightly higher than that of the control. Cooking loss in T1 was significantly lower than controls (p<0.05). CIE $L^*$ and CIE $b^*$ value were significantly higher in the control (p<0.05), but CIE $a^*$ value of T1 was higher than control (p<0.05). The drip loss of T1 were significantly lower than controls (p<0.05). Sensory characteristics of the treatment group showed higher than controls (p<0.05). These results showed that FS could be served as a favorable feed additive and feedstuff for enhancing pork quality.
