Corrosion of Fe-(8.5~36.9) wt% Cr Alloys at 600~800℃ in (N2, H2S, H2O)-Mixed Gases (Fe-(8.5~36.9) wt% Cr합금의 600~800℃, (N2,H2S,수증기)-혼합 가스분위기에서의 부식)

  • Fe-(8.5, 18.5, 28.3, 36.9) wt% Cr alloys were corroded between 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ for up to 70 h in a 1 atm gas mixture that consisted of 0.0242 atm of $H_2S$, 0.031 atm of water vapor, and 0.9448 atm of nitrogen gas. Their corrosion resistance increased with an increment in the Cr content. The Fe-8.5%Cr alloy corroded fast, forming thick, fragile, nonadherent scales that consisted primarily of an outer FeS layer and an inner (Fe, Cr, O, S)-mixed layer. The outer FeS layer grew into the air by the outward diffusion of $Fe^{2+}$ ions, whereas the inner mixed layer grew by the inward diffusion of oxygen and sulfur ions. At the interface of the outer and inner scales, voids developed and cracking occurred. The Fe-(18.5, 28.3, 36.9)% Cr alloys displayed much better corrosion resistance than the Fe-8.5Cr alloy, because thin $Cr_2O_3$ or $Cr_2S_3$ scales formed.

The Distribution Behavior of Alloying Elements in Matrices and Carbides of Chromium White Cast Iron (크롬백주철의 기지조직 및 탄화물에 있어서 합금원소의 거동)

  • Three different white cast irons alloyed with Cr and Si were prepared in order to study their distribution be-havior in matrices and carbides. The specimens were produced using a 15kg-capacity high frequency induction fur-nace. Melts were super-heated to $1600^{\circ}C$, and poured at $1550^{\circ}C$ into a pepset mold. Three combinations of the alloys were selected so as to observe the distribution behavior of Cr and Si : 0.5%C-25.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 1), 0.5%C-5.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 2) and 2.0%C-5.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 3). Cellular $M_7C_3$ carbides-$\delta$ferrite eutectic were developed at $\delta$ferrite liquid interfaces in the alloy No. 1 while only traces of $M_7C_3$ carbides-$\delta$ferrite eutectic were precipitated in the alloy No. 2. With the addition of 2.0% C and 5.0% Cr, ledeburitic $M_3C$ carbides instead of cellular $M_7C_3$ carbides were precipitated in the alloy No. 3. Cr was distributed preferentially to the $M_7C_3$ carbides rather than to the matrix structure while more Si was partitioned in the matrix structure rather than the $M_7C_3$ carbides. $K^m$ for Cr was ranged from 0.56 to 0.68 while that for Si was from 1.12 to 1.28. $K^m$ for Cr had a lower value with increased carbon contents. The mass percent of Cr was higher in the $M_7C_3$ carbides with increased Cr contents.

NaBH4 Hydrolysis Reaction Using Co-P-B Catalyst Supported on FeCrAlloy (Co-P-B/FeCrAlloy 촉매를 이용한 NaBH4 가수분해 반응)

  • Properties of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction using Co-P-B/FeCrAlloy catalyst and the catalyst durability were studied. Co-P-B/FeCrAlloy catalyst showed low activation energy such as 25.2 kJ/mol in 5 wt% $NaBH_4$ solution, which was similar that of noble metal catalyst. The activation energy increased as the $NaBH_4$ concentration increased. Formation of gel at high concentration of $NaBH_4$ seriously affected hydrogen evolution rate and the catalyst durability. The catalyst loss decreased as reaction temperature increased due to lower gel formation when the concentration of $NaBH_4$ was over 20 wt%. Considering hydrogen generation rate and durability of catalyst, the catalyst supported with FeCrAlloy heat-treated at $1,000^{\circ}C$ without ultra vibration during dipping and calcination after catalyst dipping was best catalyst. To use catalyst more than three times in 25 wt% $NaBH_4$ solution, it should be reacted at higher temperature than $60^{\circ}C$.

High-Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al Alloy (Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al 합금의 고온 산화 거동)

  • This study investigated the high temperature oxidation behavior of Fe-22%Cr-5.8%Al alloy and the oxidation kinetics of the alloy were discussed. Bulk samples were prepared by VAM (vacuum arc melting) and hot forging. High temperature oxidation testes were isothermally conducted up to 100 hours in 79%$N_2$+21%$O_2$ environment at three different temperatures ($900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$). The weight gain was measured after oxidation according to oxidation time (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 60, 80, 100 hours). The weight gain significantly increased with increasing oxidation temperature. As the temperature increased, the oxidized samples showed sequential formation of $Al_2O_3$, Cr-rich oxide, Fe-rich oxide. The activation energy of high temperature oxidation was obtained as 306.63 KJ/mol. $Al_2O_3$ were developed on the surface in the early stage of oxidation, representing protective role of oxidation. However, Fe-based and Cr-based oxides leaded to breakaway of oxide layer, thus resulted in the significant increase of additional oxidation.

  • Fe-Mn-Si-Ni-Cr-TiC alloys have a shape memory property, recovering initial shape by heating. With an aim to improve a durability and stability of building and infrastructure, this Fe-based shape memory alloy (FSMA) can be employed to reinforce concrete structure with creation of compressive residual stress. In this work, corrosion resistance of FSMA was compared with general rebar and S400 carbon steel to evaluate the stability in concrete environment. Potentiodynamic polarization test in de-ionized water, tap-water and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with variations of pH was used to compare the corrosion resistance. FSMA shows better corrosion resistance than rebar and S400 in tested solutions. However, Cl-containing solution is critical to significantly reduce the corrosion resistance of FSMA. Therefore, though FSMA can be a promising candidate to replace the rebar and S400 for the reinforcement of concrete structure, serious cautions are required in marine environments.

  • The connecting rod is one of the most important parts in automotive engines, transforming the reciprocal motion of a piston generated by internal combustion into the rotational motion of a crankshaft. Recent advances in high performance automobile engines demand corresponding technological breakthroughs in the materials for engine parts. In the present research, the powder metallurgy (P/M) process was used to replace conventional quenching and/or tempering processes for mass production and ultimately for more cost-efficient manufacturing of high strength connecting rods. The development of P/M alloy powder was undertaken not only to achieve the improvement in mechanical properties, but also to enhance the machinability of the P/M processed connecting rods. Specifically $MoS_2$ powders were added as lubricants to non-normalizing Fe-Cr-Mn-V-C alloy powder to improve the post-sintering machinability. The effects of $MoS_2$ addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and machining characteristics were investigated.

Protective Coatings for Application of Fe-l6Cr Ferritic Alloy as an Interconnector in SOFCs (고체산화물 연료전지용 금속접속자로의 적용을 위한 Fe-16Cr 페라이트 합금의 내산화막 코팅)

  • We studied oxidation behaviors of anti-oxidative Y-Cr oxide coated sol on ferritic steel for application of the Fe-Cr alloys as interconnectors of planar-type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells(SOFCs). In coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel, the phases of $YCrO_3$,$Cr_2O_3$and $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$on the coated surface were detected, but iron base scales were not observed after oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 h. The Mn-Cr oxide scales were grown with oxidation by diffusing components in the ferritic steel from inner. The Log(ASR/T) value that expresses electrical resistance of coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel was -4.57~$-4.70{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$, lower in comparison with the one of the uncoated ferritic steel,$-3.99{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$. This indicates the applicability of Fe-l6Cr alloy as interconnector materials for SOFCs.

고온의 염기성 수용액에서 Ni기 합금의 응력부식파괴

  • Alloy 600 및 alloy 690과 Ni-8Cr-lOFe 합금 등의 응력부식(stress corrosion cracking, SCC) 거동을 고온의 염기성 분위기에서 C-ring 시편을 사용하여 연구하였다. Alloy 600과 alloy 690을 여러 조건에서 열처리하여 etching한 후 탄화물의 분포와 입계 주변의 Cr고갈 정도 등의 미세조직을 광학현미경과 주사 전자현미경(SEM)으로 관찰하였다. 이들 재료에 대한 SCC 시험을 315$^{\circ}C$의 40% NaOH 수용액에서 일정한 부하전위(부식전위 + 200㎷)를 가하면서 수행하였으며, 동일 조건에서의 분극거동도 측정하였다. Alloy 600 MA(mill anneal) 및 TT(thermal treatment)의 SCC 저항성은 alloy 690 TT와 Ni-8Cr-10Fe SA(solution anneal)보다 낮았다. Alloy 600 TT 재료는 alloy 600 MA 및 SA 재료에 비해 SCC 저항성이 더 컸다. 고용 탄소농도는 alloy 600의 SCC 저항성에 큰 영향을 주지 못했다. 대부분의 Alloy 600은 균열전파 입계균열을 보였으나, 일부에서는 입계 및 입내 혼합양상(mixed mode cracking)을 보였다. 염기성 분위기에서 Ni기 합금의 SCC 거동을 미세조직, 분극거동의 관점에서 고찰하였다.

Effect of Sulfur on the High-temperature Oxidation of Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si Alloys (Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si 합금의 고온 산화에 미치는 S의 영향)

  • Two kinds of steels whose compositions were Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) were centrifugally cast, and oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 50-350 h in order to find the effect of sulfur on the high-temperature oxidation of Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) alloys. These alloys formed oxide scales that consisted primarily of $Cr_2O_3$ as the major oxide and $Cr_2MnO_4$ as the minor one through preferential oxidation of Cr and Mn. They additionally formed $SiO_2$ particles around the scale/alloy interface as well as inside the matrices. The high affinity of Mn with S led to the formation of scattered MnS inclusions particularly in the 0.35S-containing cast alloy. Sulfur was harmful to the oxidation resistance, because it deteriorated the scale/alloy adherence so as to accerelate the adherence and compactness of the formed scales.
