Characterization of the Microstructure and the Wear Resistance of the Flame-Quenched Cu-8.8Al-4.5Ni-4.5Fe Alloy (화염급냉 표면처리된 Cu-8.8Al-4.5Ni-4.5Fe 합금의 미세구조 분석 및 내마모성에 관한 연구)

  • The flame quenching process has been employed to modify the surfaces of commercial marine propeller material, aluminum bronze alloy (Cu-8.8Al-5Ni-5Fe), and the microstructure, hardness and wear properties of the flame-quenched layers have been studied. The thermal history was accurately monitored during the process with respect to both the designed maximum surface temperature and holding time. The XRD and EDX analyses have shown that at temperatures above $T_{\beta}$, the microstructure consisting of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ phases changed into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite due to an eutectoid reaction of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}{\rightarrow}{\beta}$ and a martensitic transformation of ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\beta}^{\prime}$. The ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite phase formed showed a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure with the typical twinned structure. The hardness of the flame-quenched layer having the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ structure was similar to that of the ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ structure and depended sensitively on the size and distribution of hard ${\kappa}$ and ${\beta}^{\prime}$ phases with depth from the surface. As a result of the sliding wear test, the wear resistance of the flame-quenched layer was markedly enhanced with the formation of the ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite.

Fabrication of Graded-Boundary Ni/Steel Material by Laser Beam (레이저빔에 의한 조성구배계면 Ni/Steel 재료의 제조)

  • This work was carried out as a fundamental experiment to fabricate a Graded-Boundary Ni/Steel material using a laser beam. A Ni sheet was placed on a steel substrate, and then a series of high power $CO_2$ laser beams were irradiated on the surface in order to produce a homogeneous alloyed layer. The processing parameters were : 4 ㎾ laser power, 2m/min traverse speeds, -2mm defocuing, 17 l/min sheiding gas flow rates. The sequential repetition of the laser surface alloying treatment up to 4 times, resulted in about 5mm thick of fair compositional gradient systems. In order to determine the microstructure, phase and compositional profiles in this material, optical microscopy, XRD and EDS were used. The compositions varied from 66% to 0% for Ni and 34% to 100% for Fe in this material The microstructures were typical morphologies of rapid solidification and solid-state cooling. Since compressive stress was formed in the heat affected region due to martensitic transformation, while relative tensile stress was developed in the alloyed region, cracks were formed between the alloyed region and the substrate region.

Effects of Induction Heating Conditions on Ni-Al Based Intermetallic Compound Coating (Ni-Al계 금속간화합물 코팅에 미치는 고주파유도 가열 조건의 영향)

  • An Ni-Al intermetallic coating has been produced by induction heating on mild steel. The effect of the induction heating conditions on the microstructure of the coating has been investigated. The reaction synthesis of the intermetallic compounds was promoted while increasing the heating rate and the holding time at reaction temperature. Especially, an NiAl phase corresponding to the initial composition of mixed powder was predominantly formed. However, the synthesis at low reaction temperatures occurred by solid state diffusion during the holding time and an Fe-Al reaction layer was formed at the interface with the substrate, regardless of the heating rate. The combustion synthesis of the intermetallic compound occurred at a temperature higher than 1023 K and resulted in an almost single phase NiAl structure.

Magnetization Process in Vortex-imprinted Ni80Fe20/Ir20Mn80 Square Elements

  • The vortex-driven magnetization process of micron-sized, exchange-coupled square elements with composition of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ (12 nm)/$Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$ (5 nm) is investigated. The exchange-bias is introduced by field-cooling through the blocking temperature (TB) of the system, whereby Landau-shaped vortex states of the $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ layer are imprinted into the $Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$. In the case of zero-field cooling, the exchange-coupling at the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interface significantly enhances the vortex stability by increasing the nucleation and annihilation fields, while reducing coercivity and remanence. For the field-cooled elements, the hysteresis loops are shifted along the cooling field axis. The loop shift is attributed to the imprinting of displaced vortex state of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ into $Ir_{20}Mn_{80}$, which leads to asymmetric effective local pinning fields at the interface. The asymmetry of the hysteresis loop and the strength of the exchange-bias field can be tuned by varying the strength of cooling field. Micromagnetic modeling reproduces the experimentally observed vortex-driven magnetization process if the local pinning fields induced by exchange-coupling of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers are taken into account.

Comparison of Soft Magnetic Properties of Permalloy and Conetic Thin Films (퍼멀로이와 코네틱 박막의 연자성 특성 비교)

  • The soft magnetic property for the Corning glass/Ta(5 nm)/[Conetic, Permalloy)/Ta(3 nm) prepared by the ion beam deposition sputtering was investigated. The coercivity and saturation magnetic field of conetic (NiFeCuMo) and permalloy (NiFe) layer with easy and hard direction along to the applying magnetic field during deposition was compared with each other. The surface resistance of conetic film with a thickness of 10 nm was 2 times lower than one of permalloy film. The coercivity and the magnetic susceptibility of conetic film decreased and increased 3 times to one of permalloy film, respectively. These results suggest that a highly sensitive GMR-SV or MTJ using conetic film can be possible to develop the bio-device.

Property and Microstructure Evolution of Nickel Silicides on Nano-thick Polycrystalline Silicon Substrates (나노급 다결정 실리콘 기판 위에 형성된 니켈실리사이드의 물성과 미세구조)

  • We fabricated thermally-evaporated 10 nm-Ni/30 nm and 70 nm Poly-Si/200 nm-$SiO_2/Si$ structures to investigate the thermal stability of nickel silicides formed by rapid thermal annealing(RTA) of the temperature of $300{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. We employed for a four-point tester, field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), high resolution X-ray diffraction(HRIXRD), and scanning probe microscope(SPM) in order to examine the sheet resistance, in-plane microstructure, cross-sectional microstructure evolution, phase transformation, and surface roughness, respectively. The silicide on 30 nm polysilicon substrate was stable at temperature up to $900^{\circ}C$, while the one on 70 nm substrate showed the conventional $NiSi_2$ transformation temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. The HRXRD result also supported the existence of NiSi-phase up to $900^{\circ}C$ for the Ni silicide on the 30 nm polysilicon substrate. FE-SEM and TEM confirmed that 40 nm thick uniform silicide layer and island-like agglomerated silicide phase of $1{\mu}m$ pitch without residual polysilicon were formed on 30 nm polysilicon substrate at $700^{\circ}C\;and\;1000^{\circ}C$, respectively. All silicides were nonuniform and formed on top of the residual polysilicon for 70 nm polysilicon substrates. Through SPM analysis, we confirmed the surface roughness was below 17 nm, which implied the advantage on FUSI gate of CMOS process. Our results imply that we may tune the thermal stability of nickel monosilicide by reducing the height of polysilicon gate.
