Detection and Diagnosis Solutions for Fault-Tolerant VSI

  • This paper presents solutions for fault detection and diagnosis of two-level, three phase voltage-source inverter (VSI) topologies with IGBT devices. The proposed solutions combine redundant standby VSI structures and contactors (or relays) to improve the fault-tolerant capabilities of power electronics in applications with safety requirements. The suitable combination of these elements gives the inverter the ability to maintain energy processing in the occurrence of several failure modes, including short-circuit in IGBT devices, thus extending its reliability and availability. A survey of previously developed fault-tolerant VSI structures and several aspects of failure modes, detection and isolation mechanisms within VSI is first discussed. Hardware solutions for the protection of power semiconductors with fault detection and diagnosis mechanisms are then proposed to provide conditions to isolate and replace damaged power devices (or branches) in real time. Experimental results from a prototype are included to validate the proposed solutions.

Detection and Isolation Method for Operator Failure by Unknown Input Observer

  • In this paper, a fault detection method for operator failures using the observation technique is proposed. The suggested algorithm is extended using the conventional sensor/actuator fault detection method. First, it is assumed that operator failure affects human work operations, as it is an external input signal. With this assumption, a human work model with operator failure is suggested. Second, an unknown input observer with proportional and integral gains is introduced. The characteristic of this observer of estimating an external signal without an exact input is shown, and the conditions for the detection of an operator failure are proposed. Finally, by simulating the container crane operations, it is verified that the observer can accurately detect an operator failure and estimate its magnitude from the given internal signal.

  • Fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. An experimental study has been performed on fault detection and diagnosis method for a water chiller. Bayes classifier, which is one of classical pattern classifiers, is adopted in deciding whether fault occurred or not. FDD algorithm can detect refrigerant leak failure, when 20% amount of charged refrigerant for normal operation leaks from the water chiller. The refrigerant leak failure caused COP reduction by 6.7% compared with normal operation performance. When two kinds of faults, such as a decrease in the mass flow rate of cooling water and temperature sensor fault of cooling water inlet, are detected, COP is a little decreased by these faults.

  • 본 연구에서는 소프트웨어 제품 테스팅 과정에서 관측고장시간에 근거한 결함 발생률을 고려한 소프트웨어 신뢰성 모형에 대하여 연구 하였다. 신뢰성 분야에서 많이 사용되는 S-분포모형을 이용한 새로운 결함 확률을 추가한 문제를 제시하였다. 수명분포는 유한고장 비동질적인 포아송과정을 이용하였다 본 논문의 결함 발생률을 고려한 소프트웨어 고장 자료 분석에서는 고장 시간 자료를 적용하였으며 모수추정 방법은 최우추정법을 이용하여 결함 발생 확률에 대한 관계와 신뢰도를 추정 하였다.

  • A redundant control scheme which can maintain its tracking capability in the case of a controller failure is proposed for the industrial applications which need high reliability with fault-tolerance. It consists of two identical controllers and a switching mechanism which includes failure detection and reconfiguration algorithm. The new detection method against controller failure using fuzzy logic enables the detection of controller failures without failure assumptions through the instability of the failed controller. The failed controller is smoothly removed from the control loop by reducing time weight of the failed controller.

  • 본 논문에서는 해석적인 모델에 기초한 고장 검출 기법의 하나인 fault detection filter를 적용한 고장 검출 알고리듬을 개발하고 이를 적용하여 고장검출 필터의 유효성을 보이고자 한다. Fault detection filter는 특수한 형태의 observer로써 특정한 고장의 발생시 잔차가 출력 공간에서 일정한 방향을 유지함으로써 고장 개소의 판별이 가능하다. 이에 본 논문에서는 fault detection filter에 기초한 고장 감지 시스템을 적용하기 위한 다이나믹 시스템 모델링과 고장감지 시스템의 설계과정 및 이를 적용 모의시험 결과를 수록하였다. 결과를 통하여 fault detection filter가 갖는 방향성에 대한 sensitivity 효과를 고장 감지 목적에 유효하게 적용할 수 있음을 보였다.

Satellite Fault Detection and Isolation Scheme with Modified Adaptive Fading EKF

  • This paper presents a modified adaptive fading EKF (AFEKF) for sensor fault detection and isolation in the satellite. Also, the fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme is developed in three phases. In the first phase, the AFEKF is modified to increase sensor fault detection performance. The sensor fault detection and sensor selection method are proposed. In the second phase, the IMM filer with scalar penalty is designed to detect wherever actuator faults occur. In the third phase of the FDI scheme, the sub-IMM filter is designed to identify the fault type which is either the total or partial fault. An important feature of the proposed FDI scheme can decrease the number of filters for detecting sensor fault. Also, the proposed scheme can classify fault detection and isolation as well as fault type identification.

An experimental study has been performed on fault detection and diagnosis method for a water chiller. Bayes classifier, which is one of classical pattern classifiers, is adopted in deciding whether fault occurred or not. Failure modes in this study include refrigerant leakage, decrease in mass flow rate of the chilled water and cooling water, and sensor error of the cooling water inlet temperature. It is possible to detect and diagnose faults in this study by adopting FDD algorithm using only four parameters(compressor outlet temperature, chilled water inlet temperature, cooling water outlet temperature and compressor power consumption). Refrigerant leakage failure is detected at 20% of refrigerant leakage. When mass flow rate of the chilled and cooling water decrease more than 8% or 12%, FDD algorithm can detect the faults. The deviation of temperature sensor over $0.6^{\circ}C$ can be detected as fault.

Soft Fault Detection Using an Improved Mechanism in Wireless Sensor Networks

  • Wireless sensor networks are composed of a large number of inexpensive and tiny sensors used in different areas including military, industry, agriculture, space, and environment. Fault tolerance, which is considered a challenging task in these networks, is defined as the ability of the system to offer an appropriate level of functionality in the event of failures. The present study proposed an intelligent throughput descent and distributed energy-efficient mechanism in order to improve fault tolerance of the system against soft and permanent faults. This mechanism includes determining the intelligent neighborhood radius threshold, the intelligent neighborhood nodes number threshold, customizing the base paper algorithm for distributed systems, redefining the base paper scenarios for failure detection procedure to predict network behavior when running into soft and permanent faults, and some cases have been described for handling failure exception procedures. The experimental results from simulation indicate that the proposed mechanism was able to improve network throughput, fault detection accuracy, reliability, and network lifetime with respect to the base paper.

고장모사 시뮬레이션을 이용한 터보냉동기의 고장검출 및 진단 알고리즘 개발 (Development of a Fault Detection and Diagnosis Algorithm Using Fault Mode Simulation for a Centrifugal Chiller)

  • When operating a complex facility, Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. In this research, FDD algorithm was developed using the general pattern classifier method that can be applied to centrifugal chiller system. The simulation model for a centrifugal chiller system was developed in order to obtain characteristic data of turbo chiller system under normal and faulty operation. We tested FDD algorithm of a centrifugal chiller using data from simulation model at full load performance and 60% part load performance. In this research, we presented fault detection method using a normalized distance. Sensitivity analysis of fault detection was carried out with respect to fault progress. FDD algorithm developed in this study was found to indicate each failure modes accurately.
