Fast Planar Shape Deformation using a Layered Mesh (계층 메쉬를 이용한 빠른 평면 형상 변형)

  • We present a trade-off technique for fast but qualitative planar shape deformation using a layered mesh. We construct a layered mesh that is embedding a planar input shape; the upper-layer is denoted as a control mesh and the other lower-layer as a shape mesh that is defined by mean value coordinates relative to the control mesh. First, we try to preserve some shape properties including user constraints for the control mesh by means of a known existing nonlinear least square optimization technique, which produces deformed positions of the control mesh vertices. Then, we compute the deformed positions of the shape mesh vertices indirectly from the deformed control mesh by means of simple coordinates computation. The control mesh consists of a small number of vertices while the shape layer contains relatively a large number of vertices in order to embed the input shape as tightly as possible. Since the time-consuming optimization technique is applied only to the control mesh, the overall execution is extremely fast; however, the quality of deformation is sacrificed due to the sacrificed quality of the control mesh and its relativity to the shape mesh. In order to change the deformation behavior and consequently to compensate the quality sacrifice, we present a method to control the deformation stiffness by incorporating the orientation into the user constraints. According to our experiments, the proposed technique produces a planar shape deformation fast enough for real-time applications on limited embedded systems such as cell phones and tablet PCs.

Fast Intra Mode Decision for H.264/AVC by Using the Approximation of DCT Coefficient (H.264/AVC에서 DCT 계수의 근사화를 이용한 고속 인트라 모드 결정 기법)

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard uses rate distortion optimization (RDO) method to improve the compression performance in the intra prediction. The complexity and computational load are increased more than previous standard by using this method, even though this standard selects the best coding mode for the current macroblock. This paper proposes a fast intra mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC encoder based on dominant edge direction (DED). To apply the idea, this algorithm uses the approximation of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient. By detecting the DED, 3 modes instead of 9 modes are chosen for RDO calculation to decide the best mode in the $4{\times}4$ luma block. As for the $16{\times}16$ luma and $8{\times}8$ chroma block, instead of 4 modes, only 2 modes are searched. Experimental results show that the computation time of the proposed algorithm is decreased to about 72% of the full search method with negligible quality loss.

Image Quality Assessment Considering both Computing Speed and Robustness to Distortions (계산 속도와 왜곡 강인성을 동시 고려한 이미지 품질 평가)

  • To assess image quality accurately, an image quality assessment (IQA) metric is required to reflect the human visual system (HVS) properly. In other words, the structure, color, and contrast ratio of the image should be evaluated in consideration of various factors. In addition, as mobile embedded devices such as smartphone become popular, a fast computing speed is important. In this paper, the proposed IQA metric combines color similarity, gradient similarity, and phase similarity synergistically to satisfy the HVS and is designed by using optimized pooling and quantization for fast computation. The proposed IQA metric is compared against existing 13 methods using 4 kinds of evaluation methods. The experimental results show that the proposed IQA metric ranks the first on 3 evaluation methods and the first on the remaining method, next to VSI which is the most remarkable IQA metric. Its computing speed is on average about 20% faster than VSI's. In addition, we find that the proposed IQA metric has a bigger amount of correlation with the HVS than existing IQA metrics.

  • In this paper, we introduce a fast approach for Bayesian detection of change points in long-memory processes. Since a heavy computation is needed to evaluate the likelihood function of long-memory processes, a method for simplifying the computational process is required to efficiently implement a Bayesian inference. Instead of estimating the parameter, we consider selecting a element from the set of possible parameters obtained by categorizing the parameter space. This approach simplifies the detection algorithm and reduces the computational time to detect change points. Since the parameter space is (0, 0.5), there is no big difference between the result of parameter estimation and selection under a proper fractionation of the parameter space. The analysis of Nile river data showed the validation of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose a two-stage fast full search algorithm for block motion estimation that produces the same performance to that of full search algorithm (FSA) but with remarkable computation reduction. The proposed algorithm uses the search region subsampling and the difference of adjacent pixels in the current block. In the first stage, we subsample the search region by a factor of 9, and then calculate mean absolute error (MAE) at the subsampled search points. And in the second stage, we reduce the search points that need block matching process by using the lower bound of MAE value at each search Point. We Set the lower bound of MAE value for each search point from the MAE values which are calculated at the first stage and the difference of adjacent pixels in the current block. The experimental results show that we can reduce the computational complexity considerably without any degradation of picture quality.

An Efficient Algebraic Codebook Search Method for ham Speech Coder (적응형 다중 비트율 음성 부호화기를 위한 효율적인 대수코드북 검색법)

  • In this paper, we efficiently implement the AMR speech coder by reducing the complexity of algebraic codebook search. To reduce the computational complexity of the algebraic codebook search, we propose a fast algebraic codebook search method that improves conventional depth first tree search method used in AMR speech coder algorithm. The proposed method reduces the search complexity by pruning the trees which are less possible to be selected as an optimum excitation. This method needs no additional computation for selecting the trees to be pruned and reduces the computational complexity considerably compared to the original depth first tree search method with slightly degradation or speech qualify. Applying our method to the implementation or AMR speech coder with 12.2 kbps mode by using the TeakLite DSP, we reduce the search complexity about 40% compared to the conventional method.

  • This paper proposes a linear scratch detection and restoration algorithm using pixel data comparison in a single frame or consecutive frames. There exists a high parallelism in that a scratch detection and restoration algorithm needs a large amount of comparison operations. The proposed scratch detection and restoration algorithm is designed with a GPU for fast computation. We test the proposed algorithm in sequential and parallel processing with the set of digital videos in National Archive of Korea. In the experiments, the scratch detection rate of consecutive frames is as fast as about 20% for that of a single frame. The detection and restoration rates of a GPU-based algorithm are similar to those of a CPU-based algorithm, but the parallel implementation speeds up to about 50 times.

A Center Biased Cross-Diamond Search Algorithm for Fast Fractional-pel Motion Estimation (고속 부화소 움직임 추정을 위한 중심 지향적 십자 다이아몬드 탐색 알고리즘)

  • In general video coding systems, motion estimation (ME) is regarded as a vital component in a video coder as it consumes a large amount of computation resources. Fractional pixel motion estimation can improve the video compression rate at the cost of higher computational complexity. It is based on the experimental results that the sum of absolute differences (SAD) shows parabolic shape and thus can be approximated by using interpolation technique. In this paper, we propose a fast fractional pixel search algorithm by combining SASR (Simplified Adaptive Search Range) and the CBCDS (Center Biased Cross-Diamond Search) pattern with the predicted motion vector. Compare with the fractional pel full search and the CBFPS, the proposed CBCDS algorithms can reduce fractional pel search points up to 81.4%, respectively with the PSNR lost about 0.05dB.

Bilateral Approach for Fast Stero Matching (빠른 스테레오 매칭을 위한 Bilateral 접근 방법)

  • Typically, local methods for stereo matching are fast but have relatively low degree of accuracy while global ones, though costly, can achieve a higher degree of accuracy in retrieving disparity information. Recently, some local methods like the ones based on segmentation or adaptive weights are suggested which achieve more accuracy than global ones. These newly suggested local methods that can estimate more accurate disparity information cannot be easily used since they require more computational costs which increase in proportion to the window size they use. In this paper, we propose the method by using distance weights and pixel difference weights similar to those of the bilateral filter. Specifically, we present constant time O(1) algorithm for the case the distance weights are equal. The suggested method requires constant time for computation regardless of the used window size. Furthermore, experiments show that the matching performance of our method is as good as the ones of other recent methods.

Efficient Hardware Architecture for Fast Image Similarity Calculation (고속 영상 유사도 분석을 위한 효율적 하드웨어 구조)

  • Due to its robustness to illumination change, normalized cross-correlation based similarity measurement is widely used in many machine vision applications. However, its inefficient computation structure is not adequate for real-time embedded vision system. In this paper, we present an efficient hardware architecture based on a normalized cross correlation (NCC) for fast image similarity measure. The proposed architecture simplifies window-sum process of the NCC using the integral-image. Relieving the overhead to constructing integral image, we make it possible to process integral image construction at the same time that pixel sequences are inputted. Also the proposed segmented integral image method can reduce the buffer size for storing integral image data.
