The purpose of this study is to develop a creative technique in fashion illustration through analyzing expressive characteristics of $d{\acute{e}}paysement$. This study is analyzed by examining the general theories of $d{\acute{e}}paysement$ and investigating the expressive technique related to the method of $d{\acute{e}}paysement$ in surrealism art and the expressive characteristics which is applied to fashion illustration. In this study, the researcher examines cases of the application of $d{\acute{e}}paysement$ to the fashion illustration through reviewing fashion illustrators' art works created since 2000. $D{\acute{e}}paysement$ is unfamiliar impression with lexical meaning in french that is translated by transposition or displacement technique, or country and one's home leave or person put in strange living environment. The characteristics of $d{\acute{e}}paysement$ in fashion illustration include spatial distortion, combination of heterogeneous objects located anywhere odd and modification and conversion of objects such as material change, change-over of scale in usual objects and conversion of inanimate objects into organism. This study examines the fashion illustrations textbooks that have been published in the domestic market, and identifies its characteristics and problems in regards to its use in developing creative students. The purpose of the study is to propose ways to improve the development of the fashion illustration textbooks. The research method of this study are as follows: First, the teaching materials on fashion illustration in Korea were researched to examine the current state of publication. Second, its contents were analyzed to identify its characteristics. Third, an improvement plan of educational materials on fashion illustration in Korea were proposed. As for the scope of study, 18 volumes of fashion illustration teaching materials published in Korea during 2004-2014 were targeted. It should be noted that translated publications, digital fashion illustration materials and teaching materials for specialized and professional organizations were excluded. Conclusions of this study are as follows: First, examination of the textbooks revealed that additional content is needed regarding theoretical understanding of fashion illustration, as well as illustrations of men and children, as there was an insufficient amount of those topics. Second, the contents on the illustration application using current trends were lacking in the unit on illustration application. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop contents that reflect these trends. Lastly, the textbooks should be packaged with compact discs CDs containing video clips to assist students to get a better grasp of the material. The result of this study can be used to develop new teaching materials on fashion illustration, and be utilized as basic information in the curriculum design of fashion illustration.
Advent of diverse media and advancement in digital technology significantly affected our perception of time and space. By utilizing digital media actively, fashion illustration has come to go beyond the limitation on conventional perspective expression. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of deconstruction of perspective in fashion illustration, and to analyze a variety of space expressions and effects of visual expression in fashion illustration. By way of literature research for the study, theoretical data are reviewed about basic concepts of conventional perspective and the characteristics and aesthetic concept of perspective deconstruction expression in visual art. By way of an empirical study, fashion illustrations that represent the deconstruction of perspective are classified and analyzed characteristics and image effects of such expressions. Deconstruction of perspective in fashion illustration find in expression of spaces by means of multi-space, multi-layer space, reverse perspective, perspective through the exaggeration, multi-perspective space, and panoramic visual condition. Fashion illustration expresses visual confusion or fantasy rather than creating realistic spaces that have utilized reasonable perspective. Fashion illustration is moving toward a trait with disharmony and an in-depth visionary space by overlapping or mixing spaces differing from each other, and by means of such peculiar and unrealistic expressions, unfamiliar images are created.
The contents of this study are as follows. First, an academic understanding has been achieved by exploring the theoretical concept "allegory", and a new theoretical approached methodology has been sought. Second, an analysis-index of fashion illustration cases has been suggested based on the allegory theory of Craig Owens. Third, in order to draw the characteristics of fashion illustration as viewed from the allegorical viewpoint and find out its feasibility, the case studies has been referred and the internal significance, external significance that combines different characteristics has been extracted. In regards to this study method, literature studies and case studies has been done in parallel with each other. This study was done in the following sequence: the establishment of the study system, the drawing of the allegory-associated concepts and the discovering the characteristics of aesthetic expressions. The results of this study on the expression characteristics of fashion illustration as viewed from the allegorical viewpoint of Craig Owens are as follows. First, the borrowing of image, which is a characteristic of allegory, contains the meaning of uncertainty in the fashion illustration as it expresses the image-synthesis and forms a completely different meaning as the fixed meaning is dissolved and it is utilized as a photo-montage technique. Second, the inference of pictogram is the mixture of linguistic medium and visual medium. Fashion illustration utilizes the characters and transmits the fashion information visually and immanently. It has the characteristic of making the information into pictograms and the internal significances of mutual-text with communication function. Third, the uniqueness of location in the fashion illustration has the special nature of utilized mediums as it is used for advertising or publicizing. The fashion illustration from the viewpoint of allegory has the impermanency of existing only for a limited time and reflects the coincidence that gives the meaning of utilized location according to the season trend. Fourth, the cross-breeding is expressed as the mixture of various materials in the fashion illustration. The method of this study was to analyze the fashion illustration books using 2D graphics. The visual expressions in fashion illustration using 2D graphics were as follows: Fashion illustration was based on a sketch or photography, and used a composition, drawing, mapping, painting, and manual work's re-touching. Characteristics of visual expression were as follows: First, a image composition was showed discontinuity and heterogeneity of image, new context and composition, and allowance of reality. Second, image transform was showed image overlap, body transformation by image recomposition, and deformed transformation by vector drawing. Third, hyper-real was showed precise touching, mechanical and neutral image, omission of background and focus of an object's characteristic and information. Fourth, following a realistic expression was showed simplified color, shading, dominant view point of fashion illustrator by omission, and daily lift style. Fifth, following a pictorial expression was showed non-fixed and irregular line, natural painting, and drawing and painting by conventional pictorial media. In conclusion, a photoshop and illustrator in 2D graphics will serve as a new media far fashion illustration with a manual work. And they will not only intensify a capacity as a commercial role of fashion illustration but also present a positive motive for students learning a fashion illustration.
In this study, we ran a collage fashion illustration program. We used in depth personal interviews to find if there are any change in self-image by psychologically analyzing the features of self-images expressed in the pieces of fashion illustration. The total number of objects were five females students majoring in fashion design in Busan. They were hoping to have a psychology consultation to resolve their concerns about the future, family affairs, appearance, and careers. Collage fashion illustration program was used as a experimental tool to find the psychological features shown in the formats and content of collage fashion illustration. We then figure out how pre and post diagnosis were different from each other in terms of ego-identity and DAP. As a result, the formats in collage fashion illustration are related to the self images such as psychological energy, incompetency, suppression, and tendency of self-centered. Also, the contents of the fashion expression are related to the self-images such as dependency, avoidance, wariness, and self-regard. All of the participants have improved self-regard and active action due to improvements in subjectivity, initiative, and goal orientation. Therefore, they could change from pessimistic self-images to optimistic ones.
This study has established a fashion illustration education plan using the contour drawing that fosters observational ability and enables creative drawing. This study developed two illustration curriculum proposals consisting of 15 weeks, combining literature and case studies. The researchers organized a step-by-step teaching plan that utilizes contour drawing according to the three stages of fashion illustration classes: foundation courses, general courses, and intensive courses. When the contour drawing is used at the beginning stage of the foundation courses of fashion illustration, it can be used as a technique to reduce the fear of students about practical skills, induce interest in illustration, and cultivate observation ability about objects. In general process, it is combined with various tools and coloring materials to strengthen expression power, and it is possible to produce detailed expressions and illustrations about human body and clothing. In intensive courses, it is expanded to the production of creative works with new aesthetics through digital techniques and mixed materials. As such, the contour drawing is expanded in various ways according to the learning contents and goals of each step, and is flexibly adjusted according to the learning content. The concrete contents of this study include followings: First, it examines the methods and characteristics of the graffiti expressions by analyzing the works of graffiti artists in order to understand the concept of graffiti and to find out the theoretical approach to it. Second, it investigates the characteristics of graffiti, and proposes concepts associated with graffiti after analyzing examples of fashion illustration which graffiti expressions are reflected. Third, it draws meanings that the use of graffiti expressions has in fashion illustration. In conclusion, graffiti expressions in fashion illustration are used in brand logos and text, human body deformation and omissions, autonomous expressions of variety of materials, symbolism, amusement, and autonomy as they are characterized by strong colors to express significance.
Fashion illustration is a language that expresses the inspirational imagination of designers. Like fashion, illustration reflects and records the social and cultural phenomena of the time. In this context, Ignasi Monreal's fashion illustration shows the characteristics that reveal modern people's ways of thinking and their desires. This study analyzed work by Ignasi Monreal in 'Gucci Hallucination' of 2018 S/S to examine the characteristics of his new painting style and the messages his fashion illustration aims to convey. He tried to harmonize his surrealistic digital illustrations of Greek mythology with Gucci items. As a result of this study, the characteristics of Monreal's illustration works were divided into two main categories: formal aspects (similarity of composition or subject and use of dépaysement techniques), and content aspects (expression of a mythical surreal being). These qualities differentiate Monreal's fashion illustration from that of other artists. In addition, his works on the myth of Icarus not only express the desires of modern people but also convey social satirical messages.
In today's college curriculum, fashion illustration courses are regarded as fundamental sources of knowledge in the fashion industry and the fine arts. The purpose of this study was to critically examine current curricula and educational objectives of fashion illustration courses offered by domestic fashion-related universities and academic institutions, in order to help the development of more effective tertiary level fashion education. Based on the results of data analysis, we suggest the following recommendations: Firstly, university courses should focus on drawing-centered fundamental education. Secondly, design education linked to fashion illustration should be strengthened. Thirdly, creativity-boosting design education is necessary. The range of curricula that could foster creativity and problem-solving skills in professionals should be enlarged, and future education should place emphasis on lateral and creative thinking. The result of this study are expected to contribute to the development of better curriculum in fashion-related education.
