  • The most widely accepted method for understanding the deformation mechanism of rock is from the use of computer simulation. However, if the changes in rock properties after excavation are significant this will prevent the computer simulation kent predicting the deformation with acceptable accuracy. If the deformations are, however, carefully measured in situ, the resulting data can be more useful far predicting the deformational behavior of underground openings, since the effect of the parameters which influence the deformational behavior are included in the measurement. In this study, extensive data analyses were carried out using the deformation measurements from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), which is a permanent nuclear waste repository The results from computer simulations were compared with field measurements to evaluate the assumptions used in the computer simulations, For better description of the deformational behavior around underground excavations, several techniques were developed, namely: (a) the calculation of the zero strain boundary; (b) the evaluation of the influence of adjacent excavations on the deformational behavior of pre-excavated openings; (c) the description of the deformational behavior using in situ measurements; (d) the calculation of the shear stress distribution; and (e) the application of a Neural Network for the prediction of opening deformation.

  • A sedimentation analysis has been attempted to figure out sedimentation environment due to construction of coastal jetties, such as fish harbor dike, flow guided dike and jetty in shallow Kusipo area, in which tidal range marks up to 6.6 meters in spring tide. As an initial approach of understanding field measurement were done on several stations along reference lines with total station and photo analysis taken by remote controlled small air craft far one and half years. Also numerical tests were done by 2-D ADCIRC model considering dry-wet treatment to evaluate flow and bottom shear stress variations. According to direct measurement, deposition seems to be dominant on Kusipo beach. Model results show bottom shear stress lessens to $0.10{\sim}0.15\;N/m^2$ on most shadow zone of jetties and the inner zone is suffering sedimentation as a result of dike construction. However this is the first approach with limited analysis, thus it should be dealt further considering physical characteristics of bottom sediments in a complete sediment model on upcoming study.

  • In this paper, a slot antenna with built-in Bazooka balun aimed for a WiBro repeater was designed and fabricated. The return loss and radiation pattern of the slot antenna were improved due to the introduced Bazooka balun. This balun brings about even radiation pattern and keeps the stabilized coverage of repeater And it is easy to unite this balun with the antenna body by providing the terminal of Bazooka balun with screw shape. H-type slot was used to reduce the size of the antenna, and the slot antenna was fabricated in the structural symmetry with respect to a feeding point to afford the omni-directional radiation pattern. The simulated results were obtained by MWS(Microwave Studio Simulator) of CST company, and the measurement on the proposed antenna was conducted in an anechoic chamber equipped with a network analyzer and a far field measurement system. The measured peak gain shows 5.75 dBi and the average gain is above -0.8 dBi. The return loss remains below -12.35 dB for all frequency bands in WiBro regarded as a good performance.

  • It is well-known that loop effect of the stage-discharge relationship is formulated based on many field observations especially for the sand rivers. Theoretical understandings of the loop effect for the sand rivers have been widely provided, based on the facts that it is driven by the flood wave propagation and bed form changes over the given flood period. However, very few theoretical studies or field observations associated with loop-rating curves in the gravel or rock-bed mountain streams have been attempted so far, due particularly to the difficulties in the accurate discharge measurement during the flood in such field conditions. The present paper aims to report a unique loop-rating curve measured at a gravel and rock-bed mountain stream based on the flood discharge observation acquired during the typhoon, Muifa that passed nearby Jeju Island in summer of 2011. As velocity instrumentation, a non-intrusive Surface Velocity Doppler Radar to be suitable for the flood discharge measurement was utilized, and discharges were consecutively measured for every hour. Interestingly, the authors found that the hysteresis of the loop-rating curve was adverse compared to the typical trend of the sand bed streams, which means that the discharge of the rising limb is smaller than the falling limb at the same stage. We carefully speculate that the adverse trend of the loop-rating curve in the gravel bed was caused by the bed resistance change that works differently from the sand bed case.

  • During the last few decades in Korea, the development of hillside or mountain areas has rapidly increased for infrastructure construction such as railroads, highways and housing. Many landslides have occurred during these constructions. Also, the amount and scale of damage caused by landslides have increased every year. In the case of Far East Asia including Korea, the damage of landslides is consequently reported during the wet season. In this paper, the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stability is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements in the large-scale cut slopes. In particular a large-scale cut slope situated on the construction site for the express highway in Donghae, Korea. First of all, The behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface indicating that the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be predicted. On the basis of being able to predict the depth of the sliding surface, stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To ensure the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. The maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head and it is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.

  • One of the input parameters in the evaluation of seismic performance of rockfill dams is shear-wave velocity of rock debris and clay core. Reliable evaluation of shear-wave velocity by surface-wave methods requires overcoming the problems of rock-debris discontinuity, material inhomogeneity and sloping boundary. In this paper, for the shear-wave velocity investigation of rockfill dams, SBF (Short-Array Beamforming) technique was proposed using the principles of conventional beamforming technique and adopted to solve limitations of the conventional surface-wave techniques. SBF technique utilizes a 3- to 9-m long measurement array and a far-field source, which allowed the technique to eliminate problems of near-field effects and investigate local anomalies. This paper describes the procedure to investigate shear-wave velocity profile of rockfill dams by SBF technique and IRF (Impulse-response filtration) technique with accuracy and reliability. Validity of the proposed SBF technique was verified by comparisons with downhole tests and CapSASW (Common-Array-Profiling Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves) tests at a railroad embankment compacted with rock debris.

  • We have attempted to give some physical into the factors that control the response of subsurface target to plane wave excitation at VLF (very low frequency) frequencies. Although the VLF technique has some serious disadvantages, such as a lack of penetration depth and limited frequencies, its advantages are also extremely important to have made it by far the most popular electromagnetic technique in current use. In the magnetic-field measurement mode these lightweight, relatively low-priced tools allow us to survey large areas rapidly and inexpensively, to locate and roughly define subsurface electrical conductors. When used in the electric-field mode the technique is, in simple environments, capable of quantitative interpretation and once again the speed and relative cheapness of these devices makes them a natural 'first electromagnetic tool ' to use in reconnaissance mapping.

  • In this study, the investigation results of conducted and radiated emission for DC/DC converter circuit applied in electric vehicles are presented. A frequency spreading circuit was used to improve the EMI characteristics of a power converter designed by using MPQ4433 chip. The frequency spreading circuit using a TLV3201 chip was designed and applied to the power converter. A PCB was fabricated based on the EMI minimization procedures and simulated and measured results were presented for the far-field and near-field conducted and radiated emissions using the fabricated circuit. The measurement were done as CISPR 25 standardized test procedures. It is clearly showed that the EMI characteristics were improved 20% in case frequency spreading was applied. The EMI reduction technique using the frequency spreading proposed in this study was first applied to the design of power converter module for automobile. It is expected that the method presented here can be effectively used for EMI improvement in the future.

  • Hemisphere type Luneberg lens antenna with a reflector(frequency : 9.375 GHz, -3 dB beam width 6$^{\circ}$, diameter 30.3 cm(about 10 A), which is miniaturized and lightweightized by attaching a reflector on a section of half the Luneberg lens antenna, is designed and fabricated on the basis of Luneberg lens antenna from which easy beam pointing is acquired only by movement of 1st radiator. Measurement shows -3dB beamwidth is 6.1$^{\circ}$ in case of E-plane and 5.5$^{\circ}$ in case of H-plane. These are good agreements with expected value. Gain of this antenna is 26dBi(Aperture efficiency for uniform distribution : $\pi$ = 44.97%) which is greater than that of 1st radiator(Rectangular microstrip antenna) by 20.4 dB. And, after calculating the approximated pattern of the 1st radiator, far-field pattern, whose source is the second aperture source farmed from the approximated pattern of the 1st radiator is computed. Comparing this far-field pattern with the expected pattern, a (relatively) good agreement is observed. Circular polarization Luneberg lens antenna is also manufactured by making 1st radiator so that it has the characteristics of LHCP and RHCP radiation. The results are as followings : -3 dB beamwidth 5.8$^{\circ}$ , side lobe level -15.3 dB, isolation between LHCP and RHCP radiation 2543, axial ratio 2 dB bandwidth about 1.4 GHz(14.9%).

  • Field measurements of the winds and waves were carried out for one year at multiple locations inside and outside of the Pohang New Harbor in order to clarify the reason of downtimes frequently occurring at most of the harbor quays and to establish an efficient countermeasure. In addition, the downtime records of the quays and precipitation data provided by Korea Meteorological Agency were acquired for mutual comparison and comprehensive analysis of the cause of downtimes. Except the influence of precipitation, it was found that the downtimes occurred when the height of waves entering into the harbor incurred by either one of swell, wind seas, or mixture of both, exceeded a threshold. The seiche whose period ranges from 5 to 80 minutes, which was suspected as a possible cause of the downtimes, is shown to have no direct relation with the downtimes. Meanwhile, the height of far-infra-gravity waves whose period ranges between 0.5 and 3 minutes, propagating to the harbor mouth forced by short period waves, showed almost proportional relationship with the height of short period waves. Based on the result of this study, it is concluded that the downtime problems of Pohang New Harbor can be greatly improved by effectively preventing the entrance of short period waves such as swell or wind seas.
