  • This study evaluated the quality characteristics of semi-dried noodles prepared with various dry rice flours (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) in order to develop the most preferred noodle recipe and to increase rice consumption. Amylography measured the viscosity of composite dry rice flour-wheat flour and indicated that the gelatinization point and maximum viscosity decreased as the level of dry rice flour increased. Both L and a values for cooked noodle significantly increased as the dry rice flour increased; however the L value decreased for uncooked of noodles. Weight, volume and water absorption of cooked semi-dried noodles significantly decreased as the dry rice flour increased; however the turbidity of soup increased. Texture properties such as hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, and adhesiveness decreased as the level of dry rice flour increased. As the amount of rice flour added increased, large particles of gluten were reduced while smaller particles of starch increased by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The color, taste, and overall preference of 75% noodles were the highest in the sensory characteristics. The results, showed that the addition of dry rice flour positively affects the overall sensory characteristics of semi-dried noodle with 75% representing the optimal level for addition.

  • Background: Our objective was to determine the knowledge and attitudes of Thai generalists (general physicians) toward palliative terminal cancer care (PC) in a primary care setting. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional descriptive survey using a self-administered questionnaire. The total number of completed and returned questionnaires was 63, giving a 56% response rate. Data analysis was based on these (Cronbach's alpha=0.82) and percentages and mean values were assessed using the Fisher's exact test to determine the correlation of variables. Results: Overall, attitude and knowledge levels were slightly satisfactory. Results indicated that general physicians had moderate scores in both attitudes (84.1%) and knowledge (55.7%) regarding palliative terminal cancer care. However, they had insufficient knowledge regarding truth telling, pain control and management with morphine, emergency management in terminal cancer care and treatment of fluid intake in terminal stages. Attitude and knowledge scores were statistically correlated (p=0.036). Knowledge scores were further positively associated with being taught palliative care in their medical curriculum (p=0.042). Conclusions: Formal education in palliative care and development of palliative care services are very much needed in Thailand to provide holistic care to terminally ill patients.

  • We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.

  • Length of a vehicle is an important variation to generate different variants of an automotive platform. This parameter is usually adjusted by embedding dimensional flexibility into different components of the Body in White (BIW) including the floor pan. Due to future uncertainties, it is not necessarily possible to define certain values of wheelbase for the future products of a platform. This work is performed to add flexibility into the design process of a length-variable floor pan. By means of this analysis, the cost and time consuming process of optimization is not necessary to be performed for designing the different variants of a product family. Stiffness and mass of the floor pan are two important functional requirements of this component which directly affect the occupant comfort, dynamic characteristics, fuel economy and environmental protection of the vehicle. A combination of Genetic algorithm, GMDH-type of artificial neural networks and TOPSIS methods is used to optimally design the floor pan associated with arbitrary length of the variant in the defined system range. The correlation between the optimal results shows that for a constant mass of the floor pan, the first natural frequency decreases by increasing the length of this component.

  • This research developed satellite account for household production to measure the whole size of production in Korea. The standardized satellite account was designed on the basis of Ironmonger's IO table. Results of this research were summarized as follows. First, the economic values of male and female labor invested for household production was 1,560,000 and 5,380,000 Won, respectively. Female input was greater than male by 3.5 times. Second, the expenditure for durable goods for household production was on average 470,000 Won per year. Among the total expenditure, 36% was spent for household management activities, 25% for food preparation and 25% for cleaning and laundry. Results of examining the expenditure for durable goods in total production activities showed that more than half was spent for household production; 54% for household production, 39% for leisure, 4% for sleeping, and 3% for individual use. Third, among expenditure of consumption for intermediate foods for household production, expenditure for food was the greatest to be followed by expenditures for child care, other houseworks, and cleaning and laundry. Finally, the total value of household production in Korea turned out to reach 171 trillion won which was value of 36% of GDP(482 trillion Won) in 1999.

  • This study categorizes consumers by the style of consumers' purchase behavior, and examines the differences in consumers' attitudes toward environment and pro-environmental behavior in the stage of purchase, usage, and disposal. The results of this study are summarized below: First, The style of consumers' purchase behavior can be categorized on a basis of four factors: fashioned-demonstrative consumer group focusing on fashion and demonstration effects when purchasing; rational consumer group more likely to concern price, quality, and product function; indifferent consumer group having no interest in purchasing; and fashioned-functional consumer group who values not only fashion but function. Second, the result of investigating the differences of consumers' attitudes toward environment reveals that the level of concern and awareness for environment is highest in rational consumer group, but lowest in indifferent consumer group. Also, it is higher in fashioned-functional consumer group than in fashioned-demonstrative consumer group. Lastly, the level of pro-environmental behavior in the stage of purchase, usage, and disposal is highest in rational consumer group, but lowest in indifferent consumer group. The level of pro-environmental behavior in usage stage is inactive in fashioned-demonstrative consumer group, whereas that in disposal stage is active in fashioned-functional consumer group for fashioned-demonstrative consumer group. It was so, especially in the area of not-being-a-litterbug.
