  • This paper describes the design and implementation of fall-down detection algorithm based on image processing. The fall-down detection algorithm separates objects by using background subtraction and binarization after grayscale conversion of the input image acquired by the camera, and recognizes the human body by using labeling operation. The recognized human body can be monitored on the display image, and an alarm is generated when fall-down is detected. By using computer simulation, the proposed algorithm has shown a detection rate of 90%. We verify the feasibility of the proposed system by verifying the function by using the prototype test implemented on the DSP image processing board.

  • Social activities of the elderly have been increasing as our society progresses toward an aging society. As their activities increase, so does the occurrence of falls that could lead to fractures. Falls are serious health hazards to the elderly. Therefore, development of a device that can detect fall accidents and prevent fracture is essential. In this study, we developed a portable fall detection system for the fracture prevention system of the elderly. The device is intended to detect a fall and activate a second device such as an air bag deployment system that can prevent fracture. The fall detection device contains a 3-axis acceleration sensor and two 2-axis tilt sensors. We measured acceleration and tilt angle of body during fall and activities of daily(ADL) living using the fall detection device that is attached on the subjects'. Moving mattress which is actuated by a pneumatic system was used in fall experiments and it could provide forced falls. Sensor data during fall and ADL were sent to computer and filtered with low-pass filter. The developed fall detection device was successful in detecting a fall about 0.1 second before a severe impact to occur and detecting the direction of the fall to provide enough time and information for the fracture preventive device to be activated. The fall detection device was also able to differentiate fall from ADL such as walking, sitting down, standing up, lying down, and running.

  • Purpose: This study proposes a fall detection model based on a top-down deep learning pose estimation model to automatically determine falls of multiple workers in an underground utility tunnel, and evaluates the performance of the proposed model. Method: A model is presented that combines fall discrimination rules with the results inferred from YOLOv8-pose, one of the top-down pose estimation models, and metrics of the model are evaluated for images of standing and falling two or fewer workers in the tunnel. The same process is also conducted for a bottom-up type of pose estimation model (OpenPose). In addition, due to dependency of the falling interference of the models on worker detection by YOLOv8-pose and OpenPose, metrics of the models for fall was not only investigated, but also for person. Result: For worker detection, both YOLOv8-pose and OpenPose models have F1-score of 0.88 and 0.71, respectively. However, for fall detection, the metrics were deteriorated to 0.71 and 0.23. The results of the OpenPose based model were due to partially detected worker body, and detected workers but fail to part them correctly. Conclusion: Use of top-down type of pose estimation models would be more effective way to detect fall of workers in the underground utility tunnel, with respect to joint recognition and partition between workers.

  • In this study, a real-time fall detection system based on a smartphone equipped with three-axis accelerometer and magnetometer was proposed and evaluated. The proposed system provides a service that detects falls in real time, triggers alarm sound, and sends emergency SMS(Short Message Service) if the alarm is not deactivated within a predefined time. When both of the acceleration magnitude and angle displacement of the smartphone attached to waist belt are greater than predefined thresholds, it is detected as a fall. The proposed system was evaluated against activities of daily living(walking, jogging, sitting down, standing up, ascending stairs, and descending stairs) and unintended falls induced by a proprietary pneumatic-powered mattress. With the thresholds of acceleration magnitude 1.7g and angle displacement $80^{\circ}$, it showed 96.5% accuracy to detect the falls while all the activities of daily living were not detected as fall.

  • The population of elderly people increases rapidly as our society moves towards the aged one. Healthcare for the elderly becomes an important issue and falling down is one of the critical problems although not well recognized. In this study, a fall detection system was developed using a 3-axis accelerometer. Analyzing fall patterns, we took into account the degree of impact, posture angle, the repetitions of similar movements and the activities after a potential fall and proposed an algorithm of fall detection. Information of the fall sensor was sent to a remote healthcare server through the wireless networks of Zigbee and WLAN. Our system was designed to monitor multiples users. 12 persons participated in experiment and each one performed 24 different movements. Our proposed algorithm was compared with other reported ones. Our method produced the excellent results having a sensitivity of 96.4 % and a specificity of 100 % whereas other methods had a sensitivity range between 87.5 % and 94.8 % and a specificity range between 63.5 % and 83.3 %.

  • In this study, the falls detection and direction classification system was implemented using 3-axial acceleration signal. The acceleration signals were acquired from the 3-axial accelerometer(MMA7260Q, Freescale, USA), and then transmitted to the computer through USB interface. The implemented system can detect falls using the newly proposed algorithm, and also classify the direction of falls using fuzzy classifier. The 6 subjects was selected for experiment and the accelerometer was attached on each subject's chest. Each subject walked in normal pace for 5 seconds, and then the fall down according to the four direction(front_fall, back_fall, left_fall and right_fall) during at least 2 second. The falls was easily detect using the newly proposed algorithm in this study. The acquired signals were analyzed after 1 second from generating falls. The fuzzy classifier was used to classify the direction of falls. The mean value of the falls detection rate was 94.79%. The classifier rate according to falls direction were 95.83% in case of front falls, 100% incase of back falls, 87.5% in case of left falls, and 95.83% in case of right falls.

  • In large ships with complex structures, it is difficult to locate workers. In particular, it is not easy to detect when a worker falls down, making it difficult to respond quickly. Thus, research is being conducted to detect fallen workers using a camera or by attaching a device to the body. Existing image-based fall detection systems have been designed to detect a person's body parts; hence, it is difficult to detect them in various ships and postures. In this study, the entire fall area was extracted and deep learning was used to detect the fallen shipworker based on the image. The data necessary for learning were obtained by recording falling states at the shipyard. The amount of learning data was augmented by flipping, resizing, and rotating the image. Performance evaluation was conducted with precision, reproducibility, accuracy, and a low error rate. The larger the amount of data, the better the precision. In the future, reinforcing various data is expected to improve the effectiveness of camera-based fall detection models, and thus improve safety.

  • BiCMOS circuit consist of CMOS part which constructs logic function, and bipolar part which drives output load. Test to detect stuck-open faults in BiCMOS circuit is important, since these faults do sequential behavior and are represented as transition faults. In this paper, proposes a method for efficiently detecting transistor stuck-open faults in BiCMOS circuit by transforming them into slow-to=rise transition and slow-to-fall transition. In proposed method, BiCMOS circuit is transformed into equivalent gate-level circuit by dividing it into pull-up part which make output 1, and pull-down part which make output 0. Stuck-open faults in transistor are modelled as transition fault in input line of gate level circuit which is transformed from given circuit. Faults are detceted by using pull-up part gate level circuit when expected value is '01', or using pull-down part gate level circuit when expected value is '10'. By this method, transistor stuck-open faults in BiCMOS circuit are easily detected using conventional gate level test generation algorithm for transition fault.

  • This paper describes the obstacle avoidance architecture to walk safely around in factory and home environment, and presents methods for path planning and obstacle avoidance for the humanoid robot. Solving the problem of obstacle avoidance for a humanoid robot in an unstructured environment is a big challenge, because the robot can easily lose its stability or fall down if it hits or steps on an obstacle. We briefly overview the general software architecture composed of perception, short and long term memory, behavior control, and motion control, and emphasize on our methods for obstacle detection by plane extraction, occupancy grid mapping, and path planning. A main technological target is to autonomously explore and wander around in home environments as well as to communicate with humans.

  • In most switching system, the processing unit is designed to work efficiently even at relatively high loads, but when the offered traffic exceeds a particular level, the rate of completed calls can fall drastically. A single call handled by the switching system consists of a sequence of events or messages that has to be processed by the control unit. The control unit is not only incapable of handling all of the offered calls, but also its call handling capability can drop as the offered load increases. The real time available for call processing is a critical resource that requires careful management. Therefore, the overloading of this resource must be detected by a subscriber in the from of a dial tone delay or an uncompleted call which is either blocked or mishandled. The subscriber may respond by either dialing prematurely or by re-attempting a call. This action can further escalate the processors load, which is spent for uncompleted calls. Unless a proper control is used, the switching system can finally break down. In this paper, we paper, we propose a fuzzy overload detection and control method for switching systems, which can by generating fuzzy rules via fuzzy aggregation networks. Simulation results involving a switching system is given.
